Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. The described techniques relate to improved methods, systems, devices, and apparatuses that support power saving of wireless repeaters. Generally, the described techniques provide for wireless device (e.g., wireless repeater, wireless relay device, etc.) power savings in the absence of an attached (e.g., connected) user equipment (UE). For example, a wireless repeater may operate in a power saving mode and monitor for control information from a base station according to a slow state (e.g., according to a relatively long monitoring periodicity). Upon detection of possible UE attachment to the base station (e.g., upon detection of a random access channel (RACH) message), the wireless repeater may transition to monitoring for control information from the base station according to a fast state (e.g., according to a relatively short, or more frequent, monitoring periodicity).

Power saving of smart repeaters

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a base station may receive, via a first interface of a repeater, information associated with a second interface of the repeater. The base station may determine a configuration for the second interface of the repeater based at least in part on the information associated with the second interface, and may communicate the configuration for the second interface of the repeater via the first interface. In some aspects, a repeater may transmit, to a base station via a first interface, information associated with a second interface of the repeater. The repeater may receive, via the first interface, a configuration for the second interface, and may configure the second interface based at least in part on the configuration. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Control plane of a layer-1 millimeter wave repeater

A node including an RU and a control entity is disclosed. The node may receive, from a base station at a control entity of the node, an indication of at least one obstruction for communication via at least one reflective surface. The indication may indicate to the control entity to utilize an RU of the node and the at least one reflective surface for communication. The node may configure, upon receiving the indication of the at least one obstruction, the RU and the at least one reflective surface for communication with the base station. The node may forward communication received from, or forward communication to, the base station via the RU and the at least one reflective surface based on the at least one obstruction for communication.

Repeater-based architecture for intelligent reflective surface deployment

A relay supporting multiple relay modes is provided. The relay transmits capability information to a base station, the capability information indicating support for a first relay mode and a second relay mode. The relay determines a mode of operation, either on its own or based on an indication of a mode of operation from the base station, wherein the mode of operation comprises the first relay mode or the second relay mode. The relay communicates with at least one of the base station or another wireless device based at least in part on the determined mode of operation.

Relay with a configurable mode of operation

A base station may identify one or more beams toward a node for communication with at least one UE. The one or more beams may correspond to a plurality of beams from the node. The base station may transmit, to the node, an indication to adjust a surface phase of the node corresponding to the one or more beams or one of the plurality of beams from the node. The base station may select at least one beam of the plurality of beams from the node for communication with the at least one UE. The base station may communicate with the at least one UE via the node and the at least one beam. The at least one beam of the plurality of beams from the node may be based on a defocusing operation associated with a virtual focal point.

Initial acquisition and beam refinement from an intelligent reflecting surface using defocused beams

A node including a non-planar reflective surface is disclosed. The node may receive, from a base station, an indication of a surface configuration of at least one convex reflective surface of the node. The indication may indicate that the surface configuration corresponds to at least one of a broadcast configuration or a UE-specific configuration. The node may configure, upon receiving the indication of the surface configuration, the at least one convex reflective surface based on the surface configuration. The surface configuration may correspond to at least one of the broadcast configuration or the UE-specific configuration. The node may forward communication received from, or forward communication to, the base station based on the surface configuration of the at least one convex reflective surface.

Non-planar architecture for intelligent reflective surface

A node may identify a node configuration including one or more surface phase configurations associated with the node. In one configuration, the node may receive, from the base station, an indication of the node configuration. In another configuration, the node may select, at a controller associated with the node, the node configuration. The one or more surface phase configurations may be based on a wavelength corresponding to a center of a BWP associated with the one or more wireless signals or a wavelength corresponding to a center of a resource allocation associated with the one or more wireless signals. The node may forward, from a base station to a UE, or from the UE to the base station, one or more wireless signals. The forwarded one or more wireless signals may be associated with a beam squint less than a first threshold.

Beam squint mitigation methods for a reflected beam from an intelligent reflecting surface

The described techniques relate to improved methods, systems, devices, and apparatuses that support modem control using millimeter wave (mmW) energy measurement. Generally, the described techniques provide for wireless device (e.g., wireless repeater) power savings in the absence of an attached (e.g., connected) user equipment (UE). For example, a wireless repeater may perform relay operations (e.g., amplification and forwarding operations) for communications between a base station and a UE in some channel (e.g., in a mmW channel). The wireless repeater may use energy measurements in the channel (e.g., analog mmW measurements) to control or configure a digital interface for monitoring out of band control information (e.g., in a sub-6 gigahertz (GHz) channel). For example, a wireless repeater may use energy measurements of signals transmitted by devices in a mmW band to configure (e.g., turn on) a digital interface of another modem to monitor for control information in a sub-6 GHz band.

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. For example, the described techniques provide for wireless device (e.g., wireless repeater, wireless relay device, smart repeater, etc.) operation in a low power state, and base station signaling for triggering of wireless repeater control interface configuration. For example, a wireless repeater may operate in a power saving mode and monitor for control information from a base station according to a low power state or a slow state (e.g., according to a long monitoring periodicity relative to a monitoring periodicity associated with a full power state or fast state). Upon detection of triggering signal from a base station, the wireless repeater may transition to monitoring for control information from the base station according to a fast state (e.g., according to a short, or more frequent, monitoring periodicity relative to a monitoring periodicity associated with a low power state).

A base station may select a plurality of node parameters of a node including at least one of: a number of UEs that have accessed a network while the node is operational, an amount of information that has been communicated through the network while the node is operational, one or more QoS measurements while the node is operational, or one or more resources utilized for operation of the node. The base station may configure, upon selecting the plurality of node parameters, an access threshold for the node based on the plurality of node parameters. The base station may transmit, to the node, an indication of the access threshold for the node based on the plurality of node parameters. The node may configure, upon receiving the indication of the access threshold, access to the node for each of the number of UEs based on the access threshold.

Methods for measuring and controlling utility of an intelligent reflective surface

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described in which RF-domain wireless routers may repeat, extend, or redirect beamformed wireless signals received from one or more transmitters to one or more receivers. The router may receive transmissions at a mmW frequency using a first array of antenna elements, and provide the transmissions to a beamforming network, such as a Butler matrix, that outputs one or more a signals to a switching network. The switching network may perform switching to provide the one or more signals to desired inputs of an output beamforming network that outputs beamformed transmission beams via a second array of antenna elements.

The described techniques leverage user equipment (UE) functionality to repeat wireless signals received from a base station to one or more other UEs and received from one or more other UEs to the base station. The repeating UE receives, during a transmission time interval reserved for one of uplink communication or downlink communication, a signal from a first device. The UE operates in a time division duplex network. The UE routes the signal, via a radio-frequency (RF) transmission path from an RF receive chain of the UE to an RF transmit chain of the UE. The UE retransmits the signal to a second device during the transmission time interval.
