A method of making a high density organic polymeric particle, suitable for use in milling, includes the steps of: providing an oil phase including a high density metal, a metal modifying agent, a cross-linkable organic monomer mixture, and an oil soluble polymerization initiator; admixing the oil phase under high shear conditions in an aqueous medium to produce droplets of the oil phase in the aqueous medium; and adding a hydrocolloid to the aqueous medium containing the droplets of the oil phase. The method further includes polymerizing the droplets of the oil phase to produce high density organic polymeric particles comprising a cross-linked polymer host matrix and a high density metal wherein the high density metal is within the interior of the cross-linked polymer host matrix.

A method of printing an image with a continuous inkjet printer system employing bimodal drop size generation with pigmented inkjet ink compositions comprising a polymer additive, wherein the liquid ink is an aqueous inkjet ink comprises dispersed pigment colorant particles having a mean particle size of less than 150 nanometers and at least about 0.1 wt % of polymer additive distinct from any polymer dispersant used to disperse the pigment particles, and recirculating liquid ink supplied to the nozzle if the printer system from a liquid ink source is in-line filtered with a filter selected to be effective at retaining particles having particle sizes equal to and greater than 0.6 micrometers from the liquid ink and to pass the dispersed pigment particles. The invention enables high quality drop control in a continuous inkjet printing system.

Continuous inkjet printing method

A printhead includes a nozzle plate, a filter, and a plurality of walls. Portions of the nozzle plate define a plurality of nozzles. The filter, for example, a filter membrane, includes a plurality of pores grouped in a plurality of pore clusters. Each of the plurality of walls extends from the nozzle plate to the filter membrane to define a plurality of liquid chambers positioned between the nozzle plate and the filter membrane. Each liquid chamber of the plurality of liquid chambers is in fluid communication with a respective one of the plurality of nozzles. Each liquid chamber of the plurality of liquid chambers is in fluid communication with the plurality of pores of a respective one of the plurality of pore clusters. The respective one of the plurality of pore clusters includes two pore sub-clusters spaced apart from each other by a non-porous portion of the filter membrane.

Piezoelectric actuators are provided. In some instances, the piezoelectric actuators are high-precision piezoelectric actuators. The piezoelectric beams may have a bi-chevron configuration. Also provided are methods of making the piezoelectric actuators, e.g., using Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) fabrication techniques, and methods of using the piezoelectric actuators, e.g., as valves in fluid dispensing systems.

A process for the formation of particles of a target material is disclosed, comprising: (i) introducing the target material into a particle formation vessel, and forming a continuous liquid surface of the target material in the particle formation vessel, and an interface between said liquid surface of the target material and additional gaseous contents of said particle formation vessel; (ii) introducing a stream of cryogenic material including solid particles of cryogenic material into the particle formation vessel and into contact with the target material in a liquid state below the continuous liquid surface; (iii) allowing rapid volumetric expansion of the cryogenic material into a gaseous state while in contact with the target material in a liquid state, and release of the expanded gaseous cryogenic material through the continuous liquid surface, and forming liquid droplet particles of the target material; and (iv) collecting the formed particles of the target material.

Process for formation and collection of particles using cryogenic material

A method and apparatus for delivering a mixture of compressed fluid and marking material and depositing the marking material in a pattern onto a substrate, includes a high pressure source of a mixture of compressed fluid and marking material. A micro-machined manifold includes a plurality of micro-nozzles, a fluid chamber, and an entrance port with portions of a first surface of the micro-machined manifold defining the entrance port with the entrance port being connected in fluid communication with the fluid chamber. Each of the micro-nozzles having an inlet and an outlet with the inlet being connected in fluid communication with the fluid chamber and the outlet being located on the second surface of the micro-machined manifold. Each micro-nozzle is shaped to produce a directed beam of the mixture of compressed fluid and marking material beyond the outlet of the micro-nozzle. A housing is connected in fluid communication with the high pressure source and the entrance port of the micro-machined manifold with the connection being a sealed connection. Optionally, a device operable to capture marking material that does not adhere to the substrate can be included.

MEMS printhead based compressed fluid printing system

A method and apparatus for delivering solvent free marking material to a receiver is provided. A printhead includes a discharge device having an inlet and an outlet with a portion of the discharge device defining a delivery path. An actuating mechanism is moveably positioned along the delivery path. A material selection device has an inlet and an outlet with the outlet of the material selection device being connected in fluid communication to the inlet of the discharge device. The inlet of the material selection device is adapted to be connected to a pressurized source of a thermodynamically stable mixture of a fluid and a marking material, wherein the fluid is in a gaseous state at a location beyond the outlet of the discharge device.

Method and apparatus for printing

An article having multiple spectral deposits is provided. The article can include a support and a single nanomorphic marking material adapted to reflect light having a first spectral content and adapted to reflect light having a second spectral content. The article can include a support and a nanomorphic marking material held by the support that luminesces at a plurality of wavelengths. The article can include a support and marking material having a first particle size and a second particle size. The first particle size reflects a first spectrum and the second particle size reflects a second spectrum. The article can include a support and a marking material held by said support with the marking material including a nanocrystalline particulate having a measurable property non-characteristic of the same marking material in a bulk state.

Article having multiple spectral deposits

A process for the deposition of particulate material of a desired substance on a surface includes: (i) charging a particle formation vessel with a compressed fluid; (ii) introducing into the particle formation vessel a first feed stream comprising a solvent and the desired substance dissolved therein and a second feed stream comprising the compressed fluid, wherein the desired substance is less soluble in the compressed fluid relative to its solubility in the solvent and the solvent is soluble in the compressed fluid, and wherein the first feed stream is dispersed in the compressed fluid, allowing extraction of the solvent into the compressed fluid and precipitation of particles of the desired substance; (iii) exhausting compressed fluid, solvent and the desired substance from the particle formation vessel at a rate substantially equal to the rate of addition of such components to the vessel in step (ii) through a restrictive passage to a lower pressure whereby the compressed fluid is transformed to a gaseous state and a flow of particles of the desired substance is formed; and (iv) exposing a receiver surface to the exhausted flow of particles of the desired substance and depositing a uniform layer of particles on the receiver surface.

Process for the deposition of uniform layer of particulate material

A process for the patterning of a desired substance on a surface includes: (i) charging a particle formation vessel with a compressed fluid; (ii) introducing into the particle formation vessel a first feed stream comprising a solvent and the desired substance dissolved therein and a second feed stream comprising the compressed fluid, wherein the desired substance is less soluble in the compressed fluid relative to its solubility in the solvent and the solvent is soluble in the compressed fluid, and wherein the first feed stream is dispersed in the compressed fluid, allowing extraction of the solvent into the compressed fluid and precipitation of particles of the desired substance; (iii) exhausting compressed fluid, solvent and the desired substance from the particle formation vessel at a rate substantially equal to a rate of addition of such components to the vessel in step (ii) through a restrictive passage to a lower pressure whereby the compressed fluid is transformed to a gaseous state, and wherein the restrictive passage includes a discharge device that produces a shaped beam of particles of the desired substance at a point beyond an outlet of the discharge device, where the fluid is in a gaseous state at a location before or beyond the outlet of the discharge device; and (iv) exposing a receiver surface to the shaped beam of particles of the desired substance and selectively depositing a pattern of particles on the receiver surface.

Process for the selective deposition of particulate material

A method of forming a color filter is provided. The method includes providing a mixture of a color filter material and a compressed fluid; providing at least a partially controlled environment for retaining a substrate, the at least partially controlled environment being in fluid communication with the mixture of the color filter material and the compressed fluid; providing a shadow mask in close proximity to the substrate retained in the at least partially controlled environment; and chargably releasing the mixture of the color filter material and the compressed fluid into the at least partially controlled environment, wherein the color filter material becomes free of the compressed fluid prior to contacting the substrate at locations defined by the shadow mask thereby forming a patterned deposition on the substrate.

Method of manufacturing a color filter

An apparatus and method of color tuning a light emitting display are provided. The apparatus includes a source of a mixture of a compressed fluid solvent and an organic material. A discharge device is positioned in fluid communication with the source of the mixture of the compressed fluid and the organic material. A condition controlling device is positioned in fluid communication between the source and the discharge device. The method includes providing a substrate, providing a first addressing electrode on the substrate, controllably depositing an organic nanomorphic material over the first addressing electrode, and providing a second addressing electrode over the organic nanomorphic material.

A process for the preparation of a self assembled superlattice thin film of organic nanocrystal particles is described comprising: (i) combining one or more functional organic material to be precipitated as nanocrystal particles and one or more surface active material in a compressed COphase with a density of at least 0.1 g/cc, where the functional material is substantially insoluble in the compressed COin the absence of the surfactant, the surfactant comprises a compressed CO-philic portion and a functional material-philic portion, and the compressed COphase, functional material and surfactant interact to form an aggregated system having a continuous compressed COphase and a plurality of aggregates comprising surfactant and functional material molecules of average diameter less than 50 nanometers dispersed therein; (ii) rapidly depressurizing the compressed COphase thereby precipitating the dispersed functional and surfactant materials in the form of composite organic nanocrystals of average diameter less than 50 nanometers, and (iii) depositing the organic nanocrystals on a substrate surface, wherein the organic nanocrystals form a thin film having an ionic content of less than 0.001 M in equivalent sodium chloride concentration on the substrate surface, and the thin film exhibits a long range periodicity in the arrangement of the organic nanocrystals in a self assembled superlattice structure, as evidenced by x-ray diffraction.
