A method of forming a shaped container may include providing a metallic preform. A first pressure may be applied to the metallic preform within a mold of a shaped container to produce a container part with a partially formed container shape. The container part with the partially formed container shape may then be at least partially annealed. A second pressure may be applied to the container part within the mold to produce a container part with a fully formed container shape.

A system and method of manufacturing a metal vessel may include providing a preform being formed of work hardened aluminum. The preform may have an open portion, a closed portion, and body portion. A multiple segment mold may be closed around the preform. The multiple segment mold may include at least one projecting portion operative to partially deform the preform while closing the mold. The preform may be blow molded by causing a step-like change in pressure within the preform to cause the preform to take a shape defined by the mold when the mold is in the closed position. The molded preform may be removed from the mold.

System and method for forming a metal beverage container using blow molding

A system and method of manufacturing a metal vessel may include inserting a preform into a mold that includes multiple segments, the preform being a work hardened metal. A pre-pressure may be applied to the preform at a first pressure level. The multiple segments of the mold may be closed, and the pressure being applied to the preform may be increased using a step function to a second pressure level after the mold is closed to cause the preform to take a shape defined by the mold.

System and method for forming a metal beverage container using pressure molding

A system and method of forming a metal container with a featured sidewall may include providing a blow molded metal container. The metal container may be positioned into a mold inclusive of at least one sidewall feature. The metal container may be blow molded again to cause the at least one sidewall feature to be created in the sidewall of the container as defined by the mold. In one embodiment, a sidewall of the metal container may be at least partially annealed. The sidewall feature may include a portion of a profile of a sporting good, such as a baseball, embossed feature (e.g., word), logo, or otherwise. The metal container may be a shaped metal container.

The preform may have an open portion, a closed end portion, and body portion. A multiple segment mold may be closed around the preform. The preform may be blow molded by causing a step-like change in pressure within the preform to cause the preform to take a shape defined by the mold. The molded preform may be removed from the mold.

A system and method of manufacturing a metal vessel may include providing a preform formed of a work hardened metal that includes an open portion, a closed end portion, and body portion. The body portion of the preform may be preheated in a manner that limits heat being applied to the open portion and closed end portion of the preform. The preheated preform may be blow molded.

A system and method of forming a vessel may include providing multiple operation wheels configured in opposing facing pairs. Each operation wheel may include multiple work zones, each work zone of an operation wheel being configured in an opposing facing pair with a work zone of another operation wheel to engage the vessel and perform a forming operation on the vessel. Opposing facing pairs of the operation wheels may be linearly pushed to a closed position to engage the vessel, and pulled to an open position. The work zone(s) may perform least one forming operation on the vessel. The vessel may be indexed through the operations at a rotational timing coordinated to index the vessel when opposing facing pairs of the operation wheels are in the open position, the indexing may be clockwise or counterclockwise based on whether a decoration operation is to be performed on the vessel.

Method of forming a vessel

A can end member has a center panel, a circumferential chuck wall, and a transition wall. The center panel is centered about a longitudinal axis and has a peripheral edge. The center panel also has a step portion located radially outwardly from the longitudinal axis. The step portion has an annular convex portion joined to an annular concave portion and displaces at least a portion of the center panel vertically in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis. The curl defines an outer perimeter of the end member. The circumferential chuck wall extends downwardly from the curl to the transition wall. The transition wall connects the chuck wall with the peripheral edge of the center panel. The transition wall has a folded portion extending outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis.

In a method of forming a beverage can end wherein a beverage can end shell has a curl defining a perimeter of the can end, a chuckwall extending downwardly and radially inwardly from the curl, a generally U-shaped countersink joining the chuckwall to an outer peripheral edge of a center panel, a method of forming an arcuate chuckwall in the beverage can end shell is described. The method of forming the arcuate chuckwall comprises the steps of providing a partially formed can end, providing an upper tooling having an annular, generally arcuate segment, and providing a lower tooling having a circumferential, generally arcuate, outwardly convex segment in at least partial alignment with the annular, generally arcuate segment of the upper tooling. The annular, generally arcuate segment of the upper tooling and the circumferential, generally arcuate, outwardly convex segment of the lower tooling are brought into engagement with a public side and a product side of the partially formed can end, respectively. A portion of the partially formed can end is reformed to form a circumferential, generally arcuate, outwardly convex segment located between an upper bend in the can end having a center of curvature above a public side of the can end and a lower bend in the partially formed can end having a center of curvature below the public side of the partially formed can end.

Method of forming a can end

A beverage can end is described. The beverage can end has a curl defining a perimeter of the can end, a chuckwall extending downwardly and radially inwardly from the curl, and a transition wall joining the chuckwall to an outer peripheral edge of a center panel. The transition wall is formed in compression such that a portion of the transition wall exhibits a compressed segment having a thickness which is 1% to 20% thicker than a thickness of the center panel.

A can end member for a beverage container is disclosed. The end member has a curl at least substantially defining a perimeter of the can end, a chuck wall extending downwardly and radially inwardly from the curl, and a central panel wall centered about a longitudinal axis. The central panel wall has a product side and a public side. The public side has a means for opening a frangible panel segment. The end member also has a fold joining the chuck wall with the central panel wall. The fold has an opening. A fluid is located adjacent the opening.

The folded portion has a first leg, a second leg, and a third leg. The first leg is directly connected to the chuck wall and joined to the second leg by a concave annular portion. The second leg is joined to the third leg by a convex annular portion, and the third leg is joined to the center panel. The convex annular portion has a radius of curvature greater than 0.002 ins.

A can end member has a center panel, a circumferential chuck wall, a transition wall, and a curl. The center panel is centered about a longitudinal axis and has a peripheral edge. The center panel has a peripheral edge. At least a portion of the peripheral edge includes coined segment. The curl defines an outer perimeter of the end member. The circumferential chuck wall extends downwardly from the curl to the transition wall. The transition wall connects the chuck wall with the peripheral edge of the center panel. The transition wall has a folded portion extending outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis.
