An adjustment ring () is configured to facilitate vane () position adjustment in a variable turbine geometry turbocharger (), and is formed of an assembly of one or more first ring portions () that are formed of a first material, and one or more second ring portions () that are formed of a second material. The first material has different material properties than the second material. In some embodiments, high-wear portions of the adjustment ring () can selectively and cost-effectively be formed of wear-resistant material while remaining portions are formed of a conventional material. A cost-effective method of manufacturing multi-piece adjustment rings () is described.

Adjustment ring assembly for variable turbine geometry turbochargers

A plurality of guide vanes () in a variable turbine geometry turbocharger () regulates a flow of exhaust gas. The guide vanes () are selectively adjustable between an open position to allow the flow of exhaust gas to drive a turbine wheel () and a closed position to block the flow of exhaust gas. A first flow feature () is disposed on first () and second () edges of the guide vanes () to disturb the flow of exhaust gas to prevent leakage of exhaust gas around the first () and second () edges. A second flow feature () is disposed on front () and rear () surfaces of the guide vanes () to channel the flow of exhaust gas between adjacent guide vanes () when the guide vanes () are in the open position to prevent swirling and/or cross flow of the exhaust gas.

Turbocharger with variable turbine geometry having grooved guide vanes

A turbocharger () for an internal combustion engine includes a symmetric twin-volute turbine housing () having first and second volutes (). A turbine wheel () is disposed within the symmetric twin-volute turbine housing () for rotation about a turbocharger axis (R). A nozzle ring () is fixedly secured to the symmetric twin-volute turbine housing (). The nozzle ring () includes a plurality of fixed vanes () disposed circumferentially around the turbocharger axis (R). The plurality of fixed vanes () form nozzle passages leading from at least one of the first and second volutes () to the turbine wheel () for directing exhaust gas against the turbine wheel () at an optimum angle.

Split nozzle ring to control EGR and exhaust flow

A variable geometry turbocharger is simplified yet able to reliably operate in a robust, cost effective manner. The adjusting ring assembly has a reduced number of parts in the vane adjusting assembly but still operates as it did with the parts in the conventional assembly, but at lower part and capital cost. The adjusting ring is constrained axially and radially by interaction with an inner diameter and an abutment provided in the upper vane ring of the vane pack.
