A labeled article, a method of making the labeled article, and a label for use in such method, contemplate the manufacture of an article having an article body made of a moldable material, and a label, integral with the article body and having an outer label surface coplanar with the outer article body surface. The label is inserted into the mold and molded into place as the article body is molded. The label has an outer film ply defining the outer label surface, a printable sheet ply inward from said outer film ply, and an adhesive layer between the outer film ply and the printable sheet ply. The outer film ply has a length and a width greater than the length and width of the printable sheet ply. The outer film ply extends beyond the printable sheet ply adjacent all edges of the printable sheet ply and shields the printable sheet ply from exposure to the environment surrounding the labeled article.

In-mold labeled article and method

A security document includes a substrate, and an imaging thermal coating on at least a portion of the surface of the substrate for thermal printing on the security document. The imaging thermal coating is soluble in one or more solvents. A warning message is printed on the substrate in an ink which is substantially insoluble in the one or more solvents. An obscuring coating on the substrate covers the warning message such that the warning message is not apparent to an observer. The obscuring coating is soluble in the one or more solvents, such that the obscuring coating is removed from the substrate if the document is subjected to washing with the one or more solvents to remove printed images on the imaging thermal coating. By this arrangement, an attempt to alter the security document by washing the security document with the one or more solvents is made apparent.

Security document

A document which may be a security document has a thermochromic coating which may be a thermochromic ink on the substrate of the document. The ink may include several thermochromic materials which transition from various different colors to substantially clear in appearance as the ink is warmed to various temperatures. The combination of the colors of the thermochromic materials can give the document a different color at a number of different temperatures, until the coating is warmed to the highest color change point. When at or above the highest color change temperature, the coating becomes substantially transparent and the printed area assumes the color of the underlying substrate. The coating may also include non-reactive materials of yet another color that mixes with the colors of the thermochromic materials. The document may additionally include printed indicia on the substrate that are masked by the thermochromic materials at certain temperatures, and not masked by the thermochromic materials at other temperatures.

A document uses a chemically reactive security ink to facilitate security, making it more difficult to alter a genuine security document. The chemically reactive security ink masks a warning word or message on a security document. The hidden warning word or message is revealed when the document is subjected to chemical washing.

A mailer intermediate, foldable into postcard size, includes a generally rectangular sheet of card stock having first and second side edges, first and second end edges, and first and second faces. A fold line extends substantially transverse to the side edges and substantially bisecting them, and dividing the sheet into first and second portions. An adhesive pattern on the first face of the sheet, adjacent at least one of the first and second end edges, secures the first and second portions together adjacent the first and second end edges. An obscuring coating and a camouflage image are provided on the first face of the sheet. Variable indicia are printed on the obscuring coating, and are not legible when viewed by an observer who separates the first and second portions while the first and second portions remain secured together adjacent the first and second end edges. The obscuring coating may comprise a multi-layer, thermochromic coating. Alternatively, the obscuring coating may comprise a reflective coating.

Optically variable water-based inks, methods of providing security information, and documents are provided. The optically variable water-based inks are suitable for flexographic printing processes, and the optically variable water-based inks display a viewing angle dependent color shift between at least a first color and at least a second color. The optically variable water-based inks may be used to provide security information and to flexographically print documents.

The invention is a method and system that is useful to authenticate security paper. Specifically, the present invention relates to a method and system that allows security paper to be authenticated more than once without destroying the authentication mechanism. An authenticating solution is applied to a surface of an authentic document or other authentic security paper. Subsequent application of an activating solution to a surface of a document containing the authenticating solution causes a reversible color change allowing the document to be authenticated.

A heat-transferable security stamp is provided including a carrier sheet, a top coat layer, at least one design layer between the carrier sheet and the top coat layer, a release layer between the carrier sheet and the design layer, and a base coat layer between the release layer and the design layer. The release layer includes a water-borne release component. The base coat layer includes a water-borne base coat component. The design layer includes a water-borne design component. The top coat layer includes a water-borne top coat component. The carrier sheet is resistant to heat above a predetermined heat transfer temperature. The adhesive release component of the release layer is operative to secure the carrier sheet to the base coat layer at temperatures below the heat transfer temperature and to permit release of the carrier sheet from the base coat layer at temperatures above the heat transfer temperature. The base coat component of the base coat layer is operative to function as a barrier between the release layer and the design layer at temperatures above and below the heat transfer temperature. The design component of the design layer is operative to provide an indication of the presence of the security stamp. The top coat component is operative to adhere to a substrate upon contact with the substrate and upon application of heat above the heat transfer temperature. The recited water-borne components may be capable of being borne in water as an aqueous emulsion, an aqueous dispersion, or an aqueous solution.

A method of transparentizing a cellulosic substrate which is suitable for use as a mailer or envelope having at least one transparentized portion is provided. The method includes the application of a transparentizing composition to a substrate by a flexographic printing apparatus in which one or more of the transparentizing composition, the substrate, and the transfer rollers of the printing apparatus are preferably cooled prior to application in order to raise the viscosity of the composition and allow more of the composition to be transferred to the substrate surface. A primer composition may also be applied to the substrate prior to application of the transparentizing composition in order to aid in penetration of the transparentizing composition.

A pattern of coating is applied to a label, such that the coating covers the periphery, including a portion of the top surface of the label, and overlaps onto the liner ply area adjacent to the label. The coating is selected to form a stable and resistant film that spans continuously along the label edge and liner surfaces. The coating reduces adhesive ooze when the label is exposed to elevated ambient temperatures and pressures.

A UV curable CF ink composition is provided which is formed from a UV curable ink base, an acidic color developer, and a solvent. The UV curable CF ink composition may be applied to a substrate inline on a printing press using conventional letterpress or offset techniques without discoloration or smudging of the ink.

A security document is provided comprising a finished cellulosic substrate having at least one transparentized portion formed therein. The transparentized portion comprises a transparentizing composition that is applied so as to define an area of increased transparency in the substrate. The area of increased transparency includes at least one thin line and resembles a simulated security thread. The transparentizing composition can be applied to form thin lines in a variety of configurations on one or both sides of the substrate.

A single ply carbonless form is provided where a sheet is divided into a first portion and a second portion. A coating of CF is applied to the first portion and a coating of CB is applied to the second portion, both on the same side of the sheet. A quantity of temporary tacking agent is applied to the back face of the sheet such that, upon folding the sheet in a manner where the CF and CB portions are not in contact with each other, the first portion is releasably held against the second portion. The form may then be sheet fed into a printing device, preferably using the folded edge as the leading edge. Subsequent to printing, the form may then be re-folded such that the CF and CB coating suitably line up for receiving impact impressions.

A laminated product is provided including a carrier sheet, a polymeric film ply, a polymeric card ply, and a radiation-curable laminating adhesive. The polymeric film ply is secured to the carrier sheet and extends over a cut-out portion formed in the carrier sheet. The polymeric card ply is positioned within the cut-out portion. Either the film ply, the card ply, or both, are transparent to electromagnetic radiation. The radiation-curable laminating adhesive is positioned to secure the polymeric card ply to the exposed ply portion and comprises a bonding agent, a monomer, an oligomer, a tackifier, and a photocatalyst. The bonding agent is present in a quantity sufficient to improve the bonding characteristics of the adhesive composition. The monomer is present in a quantity sufficient to (i) increase the flexibility of the adhesive composition, and (ii) increase the tendency of the adhesive composition to release substantially cleanly from a surface to which it is bonded. The oligomer is present in a quantity sufficient to increase the dimensional stability of the adhesive composition. The tackifier is present in a quantity sufficient to increase the uncured tack of the adhesive composition. The photocatalyst is present in a quantity sufficient to increase the tendency of the adhesive composition to cure upon exposure to electromagnetic radiation.

A secure sticker is provided comprising a waterproof base portion including a paper ply, static printed matter, and a resin, wherein the paper ply and the static printed matter are sealed within the resin, and wherein the resin is substantially transparent to light in the visible spectrum. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a secure sticker is provided comprising a substantially waterproof base portion, a liner ply, and an adhesive interface. The substantially waterproof base portion includes a paper ply, static printed matter, and a resin. The paper ply and the static printed matter are sealed within the resin. The resin is substantially transparent to light in the visible spectrum. The liner ply defines a label portion and a removable portion, wherein the label portion includes variable printed matter thereon. The adhesive interface is arranged to adhere the liner ply to the base portion. The adhesive interface is substantially transparent to light in the visible spectrum and the adhesive interface and the liner ply are arranged such that the label portion is more likely than the removable portion to remain adhered to the base portion.
