Natural amorphous silica filler products featuring high brightness, low oil absorption, fine particle size, and low crystalline silica content are described. Methods for making, using, and measuring the properties of the natural amorphous silica filler products are also described. The natural amorphous silica filler products described herein may be useful in a variety of products including, but not limited to, polymers, sealants, paints, caulks, latex, architectural coatings, industrial coatings, pozzolan, glass catalysts, ceramic glazes, and anti-blocking applications.

Natural amorphous silica filler products

The present disclosure relates to a composition with improved flame resistance, to articles made from the composition, and to methods that include processing the composition. The composition can include from 15 to 85 percent by weight of a polyetherimide (PEI), from 15 to 85 percent by weight of a polyphenylsulfone (PPSU), a polyetherimide-siloxane copolymer in an amount up to 12 percent by weight, and from 0 to 0.30 percent by weight of a stabilizer.

Polyimide polyphenylsulfone blends with improved flame resistance

Compositions made from a polyarylate or polyester carbonate containing greater than about 50 mole % resorcinol based ester linkages give miscible blends with polyimide resins, addition of alkyl amide compounds improves mold release and melt flow while maintaining transparency. The blends also have high refractive index and low haze.

Release agent for transparent polyimide blends

Blends of polysulfones, polyethersulfones and polyphenylene ether sulfones with resorcinol based polyesters, or resorcinol based polyester carbonate polymers, and silicone copolymers have improved flame resistance. Peak heat release energy is reduced and the time to reach peak heat release is increased.

Flame retardant polysulfone blends

Blends of siloxane copolymers, notably siloxane polyimides, with polyaryl esters or polyaryl ester carbonates containing linkages derived from resorcinol, show improved flame resistance, as measured by two minute and peak heat release, compared to conventional polycarbonates. In some instances transparent flame retardant blends can also be prepared. The compositions show good melt processability, high impact strength and high elongation, and can be used to make various flame retardant articles including sheets and films.

A method to reduce haze in the production of fire resistant polycarbonate compositions comprising flame retardant salts, wherein the salt is blended with a first polycarbonate to form a concentrate, and the concentrate is then added to a second polycarbonate resin.

A thermoplastic composition comprises greater than or equal to about 60 wt. % polycarbonate; and about 10 wt. % to about 40 wt. % of a polyimide; wherein weight percents are based on a total weight of the thermoplastic composition.

A thermoplastic composition comprises polycarbonate, an impact modifier having a pH of about 3 to about 7, and a flame retardant essentially free of bromine and chlorine.

Polycarbonate composition

It has now been surprisingly found that addition of a phosphorous-containing oxy acid to a glass-filled polycarbonate composition substantially improves its fire retardant performance. Thus, the present invention provides a method for making a flame-retarded glass-filled polycarbonate resin comprising adding to the resin an effective flame-retardant amount of a phosphorous-containing oxy acid. Where appropriate, the melt strength of the polycarbonate is enhanced by the addition of an antidrip agent and the performance can be further enhanced by the addition of a flame retardant. Use of such a composition results in superior fire-retardant performance.

Method for making fire-retarded glass-filled polycarbonate and related compositions

A combination of a potassium salt of a perfluoroalkane sulfonate and a sodium salt of toluene sulfonic acid, preferably in the presence of an antidrip agent to provide high melt strength, act synergistically to provide flame-retarded polycarbonate compositions at low levels. Thus, a flame-retarded polycarbonate resin can be made by adding to the polycarbonate resin an effective flame-retardant amount of a potassium salt of a perfluoroalkane sulfonate and a sodium salt of toluene sulfonic acid. The two salts may be formulated in advance into an additive composition.

Method for making fire-retarded polycarbonate and related compositions

A transparent, fire resistant branched polycarbonate-polysiloxane composition comprises polycarbonate, a short-chained polydiorganosiloxane, a branching agent, and flame retardants essentially free of bromine or chlorine, wherein the amount of short-chained polydiorganosiloxane is about 1 wt. % or less.

A fire retardant polycarbonate composition comprises branched polycarbonate resin, polytetrafluoroethylene, a fire retardant free of bromine and chlorine, and an optional siloxane.

Translucent flame retardant polycarbonate compositions

Improved fire-retarded properties can be imparted to polycarbonate resin composition by incorporating into the polycarbonate a fire-retardant component containing a perfluoroallkane sulfonate such as potassium perfluorobutane sulfonate and a cyclic siloxane such as octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane. The fire-retardant component is suitably added at levels to form a polycarbonate composition in which the perfluoroalkane sulfonate is present in an amount of from 0.02 to 0.1 phr relative to the composition as a whole, and the cyclic siloxane is present in an amount of at least 0.02 relative to the composition as a whole.
