Methods for treating cardiovascular and related diseases such as hypertrophy are described. The methods are directed to concurrently administering a compound such as pyridoxal-5'-phosphate, pyridoxamine, pyridoxal, or a 3-acylated pyridoxal analogue with a therapeutic cardiovascular compound.

Methods for treating cardiovascular and related diseases such as hypertrophy, hypertension, congestive heart failure, ischemia, ischemia reperfusion injuries in various organs, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction, are described. The methods are directed to concurrently administering a compound such as pyridoxal-5&prime;-phosphate, pyridoxamine, pyridoxal, or a 3-acylated pyridoxal analogue with a therapeutic cardiovascular compound.

A method of treating a cerebrovascular disease, particularly stroke, is described. A method of treating a cerebrovascular disease includes administering pyridoxal-5&prime;-phosphate, pyridoxal, pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, 3-acylated analogues of pyridoxal, 3-acylated analogues of pyriodoxal-4,5-animal, pyridoxine phosphonate analogues, or pharmaceutical compositions thereof.

Methods for treating diabetes mellitus and related conditions and symptoms are described. The methods are directed to administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound. Compounds suitable for the invention include pyridoxal-5&prime;-phosphate, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine, pyridoxine, a 3-acylated pyridoxal analogue, a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, or a mixture thereof. Also disclosed are methods directed to concurrently administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound with other compounds known in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. In one embodiment, a therapeutically effective amount of a compound is administered concurrently with a therapeutically effective amount of insulin. In another embodiment, a therapeutically effective amount of a compound is administered concurrently with a therapeutically effective amount of a hypoglycemic compound.

Treatment of diabetes and related pathologies

Hypertension in mammalian patients, especially elderly human patients, derived from ingestion of NSAIDs or through the normal aging process is treated by administration to the patient of a vitamin B.sub.6 (or derivative) supplement. Where the patient requires the continued administration of an NSAID for pharmacological purposes, the NSAID is administered in conjunction with a vitamin B.sub.6 supplement. The invention further provides combination pharmaceutical combinations of an NSAID and a vitamin B.sub.6 supplement, e.g. orally administrable tablets or capsules, for use in treating such conditions.

Treatment of iatrogenic and age-related hypertension and pharmaceutical

Compositions and methods for treatment and prevention of hypertrophy, hypertension, congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, ischemia-related conditions, such as ischemia reperfusion injury and cellular dysfunction, are described. The methods are directed to administering pharmaceutical compositions containing at least one compound selected from pyridoxal-5'-phosphate, pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine.
