A bipole power transmission network includes a first upstream power converter which has a first DC terminal that is connected with a first transmission conduit which extends, in-use, to a first downstream power converter. The first upstream power converter has a second DC terminal that is connected with a return conduit which extends, in-use, to the first downstream power converter and a second downstream power converter. The first upstream power converter has at least one first AC terminal electrically connected with a first AC power source. The bipole power transmission network includes a second upstream power converter which has a third DC terminal that is connected with the return conduit, and a fourth DC terminal which is connected with a second transmission conduit that extends, in-use, to the second downstream power converter, and at least one second AC terminal electrically connected with a second AC power source.

Bipole power transmission networks

Embodiments of the disclosure include an electrical assembly. The electrical assembly can include a converter including a DC side and an AC side, the DC side configured for connection to a DC network, the AC side configured for connection to an AC network, the converter including at least one switching element; a circuit interruption device operably connected to the AC side of the converter; a DC voltage modification device operably connected to the DC side of the converter, the DC voltage modification device including a DC chopper; and a controller configured to selectively control the or each switching element, the circuit interruption device and the DC voltage modification device, wherein the controller is configured to be responsive to a converter internal fault by carrying out a fault operating mode.

Electrical assembly

A converter including a first terminal and a second terminal, the first terminal configured for connection to a first network, the second terminal configured for connection to a second network; at least one switching module arranged to interconnect the first terminal and the second terminal, the switching module including at least one module switching element and at least one energy storage device, the module switching element and the energy storage device arranged to be combinable to selectively provide a voltage source, the switching module switchable to control a transfer of power between the first and second networks; the switching module including a discharge circuit, the discharge circuit including a discharge switching element and a discharge resistor, the discharge switching element switchable to switch the corresponding discharge resistor into and out of the corresponding switching module; and a controller configured to selectively control the switching of the discharge switching element.

Fault tolerant AC-DC chain-link converter

A converter () comprises first and second DC terminals () connectable in use to a DC network (), the converter () including a converter limb () extending between the DC terminals (), the converter limb () including first and second limb portions separated by an AC terminal (), the AC terminal () connectable in use to an AC voltage, each limb portion including at least one director switch () connected in series with a waveform synthesizer between the AC terminal () and a respective one of the first and second DC terminals (), the waveform synthesizers operable to control the modulation of an AC voltage waveform at the AC terminal (), each director switch () operable to switch the respective waveform synthesizer into and out of circuit between the respective DC terminal () and the AC terminal (); and a controller () programmed to selectively control the switching of the director switches () to switch both of the limb portions into circuit concurrently to form a current conduction path between the DC terminals (), the current conduction path configured to carry a current for presentation to the DC network (), wherein the controller () is programmed to selectively operate the waveform synthesizers to inject at least one harmonic component to modulate the AC voltage waveform at the AC terminal () so that during the formation of the current conduction path the magnitude of the modulated AC voltage waveform is lower than the magnitude of the fundamental component of the AC voltage waveform, and wherein the at least one harmonic component is a non-triplen harmonic component.

Alternate arm converter

Fault protection of a voltage source converter is provided. An apparatus has a chain-link circuit in series with a director switch. The chain-link circuit includes cells including an energy storage element and cell switching elements connected with anti-parallel diodes. Each cell switching element has a cell switching element controller. The director switch includes director switch units, each having a director switching element and a director switch unit controller. Each cell switching element controller monitors for a fault current and turns-off its associated cell switching element and reports a fault event to a fault controller. Each director switch unit controller monitors for a fault current and reports a fault event to the fault controller but the director switch unit control keeps its associated director switching element turned-on. The fault controller monitors for reports of fault events to order the cell switching elements of at least some of the cells to turn-off.
