Embodiments are directed selectively mixing media at an application server arbitrating a group communication session for a communication group. In an embodiment, the application server receives media, from one or more session participants of the group communication session, for transmission to the communication group. The application server determines a number of session participants that are providing the received media. The application server determines whether to bypass the received media from entry into a de-jitter buffer based at least in part on the determined number, wherein the de-jitter buffer is configured to queue media from session participants for mixing by the application server during the group communication session. For example, the application server can determine to bypass the received media from entry into the de-jitter buffer if the number is below a threshold number. The application server transmits the received media to the communication group.

Selectively mixing media during a group communication session within a wireless communications system

Embodiments include managing a reverse link transmission power level setpoint during periods of data inactivity on a reverse link traffic channel in a wireless communications system. At an access terminal, upon detecting reverse link data inactivity above a time threshold, a message is generated and transmitted on the reverse link traffic channel at a power level sufficient for the access network to measure transmission statistics to determine whether to adjust the current transmission power level setpoint of the access terminal. Alternatively, the access terminal notifies the access network of an upcoming reverse link data inactivity period, and then lowers its transmission power level setpoint to reduce power consumption during the reverse link data inactivity period. Then, upon detection of a potential reverse link data transmission, the access terminal may then send one or more messages to prompt the access network to modify the access terminal's transmission power level setpoint.

Managing a reverse link transmission power level setpoint during periods of inactivity on the reverse link in a wireless communications system

Embodiments are directed to media forwarding for a group communication session within a wireless communications system. A server receives a frame for a given timeslot from each of a first plurality of access terminals participating in the group communication session, each of the received frames having an associated data rate. The server selects at least one and less than all of the received frames based at least in part on the associated data rates of each of the received frames. The server sends the selected at least one frame to a second plurality of access terminals participating in the group communication session.

Media forwarding for a group communication session in a wireless communications system

In an embodiment, a server obtains a user-specified mixing preference (USMP) for an access terminal (AT) in a communication group that is different than a default mixing rule for the group communication session. The server grants non-exclusive floors to a subset of ATs in the communication group, receives media frames from each AT in the subset and generates an output frame by selectively mixing the received media frames based on the USMP, after which the output frame is sent to the AT. In another embodiment, the AT obtains the USMP and receives unmixed versions of the media frames and then selectively mixes the received media frames at the AT based on the USMP. In another embodiment, an AT detects speech and requests the floor, and the AT buffers speech while waiting for the floor request to be granted.

Group communication sessions in a wireless communication system

A system and method for minimizing call setup latency in a group communication among wireless communication devices by ensuring the requisite amount of communication bandwidth for group member devices that utilize separate communication systems to control communication channels established with each of the wireless communication devices. A group communication server that sets up group communications for wireless communication device members of a communication group communicates with a resource manager resident on a communication system to reserve a predetermined amount of resources, such as bandwidth, for wireless communication devices utilizing that communication system that are members of a communication group. The resource manager communicates the availability to the group communication server of the wireless communication devices utilizing that communication system for group communications only if the predetermined resources are available for a group communication to the wireless communication device.

System and method for minimizing call setup latency in a group communication among wireless communication devices

In an embodiment, an access terminal (AT), requests a non-exclusive floor (NEF) for a group communication session (GCS) in response to a detection that a user of the AT intends to speak to an associated communication group (CG). In another embodiment, the AT later requests that its NEF for the GCS be revoked in response to a detection that the user of the AT no longer intends to speak to the CG. In another embodiment, another AT holds a NEF for the GCS, and a user of the AT decides to revoke the other AT's NEF such that the AT sends a floor-revocation request to an application server (AS) that is arbitrating the GCS. In another embodiment, the AS grants NEFs to multiple ATs, selectively mixes media received from the ATs for transmission to the CG, and selectively revokes NEFs from one or more of the multiple ATs.

Group communication sessions in a wireless communications system

A system and method for pre-allocating PTT resources including user/resource credentials at the native PTT gateway are presented. The user status and floor control information can be buffered at the native PTT gateway until the native PTT gateway receives actual resource/end point information from the media handler. Afterwards, the pre-allocation of PTT resources can be correctly mapped to the actual user resources/end point information when the native PTT gateway receives such information from the media handlers and a call is handled.

Latency improvement methods in native PTT gateway for a group call with dispatch console clients

Described are various methods and apparatuses that provide for variants for multiple resource types and efficiently managing these resources by use of common variables and an organized file structure. A file structure is organize by a common variables, such as the $lang variable, and includes resource references such that once the common variable is defined, similar resources can be referenced using the same instruction by the use of modifying the common variable. Multiple resource types, including text, images as well as other resource types may be managed using the file structure disclosed herein.
