Disclosed herein are methods and systems for routing traffic. One exemplary system includes a muxponder module deployed in an optical network, the muxponder having an optical receiver, a first and second electrical port, a demultiplexer having a built-in digital cross-connect, and a processor accessing a first calculated carrier frequency to assign traffic streams associated with a first service identification code to a first and second host lane of the first electrical port, and a second calculated carrier frequency to assign traffic streams associated with a second service identification code to a third and fourth host lane of the second electrical port, and having logic to control the digital cross-connect to route a first and a second traffic stream to the first electrical port based on the first service identification code, and a third and a fourth traffic stream to the second electrical port based on the second service identification code.

Systems and methods for enabling point-to-multi-point applications in common management interface specification

A method includes receiving client data; extracting overhead data from the client data; mapping the client data into one or more frames, where each of the one or more frames has a frame payload section and a frame overhead section, where the client data is mapped into the one or more frames; inserting the overhead data into the frame overhead section of the one or more frames; transporting the one or more frames across a network by generating a plurality of optical subcarriers carrying the one or more frames; extracting the overhead data from the frame overhead section of the one or more frames; recovering the client data from the one or more frames; inserting the extracted overhead data into the recovered client data to create modified client data; and outputting the modified client data.

Providing access to client overhead while transparently transmitting the client signal over multiple optical subcarriers

Optical networks and nodes are described herein, including an optical network comprising a head-end node and a tail-end node. A line module of the head-end node receives fault information, generates a fault packet, and sends the fault packet to a first node controller identified by first packet forwarding information included in a packet header of the fault packet. The first node controller retrieves second packet forwarding information using the first packet forwarding information, updates the packet header, and sends the fault packet to the tail-end node identified by the second packet forwarding information. A second node controller of the tail-end node retrieves third packet forwarding information using the second packet forwarding information, updates the packet header, and sends the fault packet to an optical protection switching module (OPSM) of the tail-end node identified by the second packet forwarding information. The OPSM switches an optical switch based on the fault information.

Hardware-assisted digital fault relay for sub-50ms optical protection

A regen node is described. The regen node includes a coherent receiver, a control module and a coherent transmitter. The coherent receiver has circuitry to convert a first optical signal received from an upstream node in an optical layer of an optical network to a first digital data stream in a digital layer having a first FEC frame and a data traffic. The control module extracts a first fault signal from the first FEC frame; generates a second fault signal based at least in part on the first fault signal; and encodes the second fault signal within a second FEC frame with the data traffic into a second digital data stream on the digital layer. The coherent transmitter has circuitry to convert the second digital data stream into a second optical signal on the optical layer and to transmit the second optical signal to a downstream node.

SD-FEC defect propagation across regeneration nodes in support of single and multi-carrier super channel protection in ROADM networks

An optical network having a first terminal node, a second terminal node, and a network service system is described. The first terminal node has a plurality of ports and a signal restoration component to create a restored path. The second terminal node has a plurality of ports and a failure monitor to issue a path failure notice. A working path, a protection path, and the restored path are each fiber optic lines optically coupling the first terminal node to the second terminal node to enable a service, each path requiring a quantity of exclusive licenses. The network service system receives a path failure notice indicating a working path failure, calculates the quantity of licenses required by the restored path, releases the quantity of licenses required by the working path and applies at least a portion of the quantity of licenses to the quantity of licenses required by the restored path.

Method and apparatus for a restoration network with dynamic activation of pre-deployed network resources

An example system includes a transceiver and a microcontroller. The microcontroller is configured to receive, from first and second network interfaces of the transceiver, a plurality of messages from a hub node and the leaf nodes. Each of the messages corresponds to a respective one of the ingress or egress data flows. The microcontroller is also configured generate a resource assignment map based on the messages. The resource assignment map includes pairings between a respective one of the ingress data flows and a respective one of the egress data flows, and, for each of the pairings, an indication of a respective network resource assigned to exchange the egress data flow of that pairing with a respective one of the leaf nodes. The microcontroller is also configured to generate a command to cause the transceiver to transmit the egress data flows in accordance with the resource assignment map.

Correcting traffic misconnections in optical communications networks

Systems, devices, and techniques relating to optical communications are described. A described hub optical module includes an optical transceiver configured to communicate with edge optical modules of respective edge devices via an optical communication network, the edge optical modules comprising edge interfaces; and a controller coupled with the optical transceiver. The controller can be configured to provide, to a hub device, hub interfaces which are configurable to respectively correspond to different optical subcarriers transmitted from and received by the optical transceiver. The controller can advertise, to the hub device, an application select code to enable the hub device to configure an operational mode and to selectively enable each of the hub interfaces in the operational mode, store one or more associations among the hub interfaces and the edge interfaces, and configure one or more cross-connections among the hub interfaces and the optical subcarriers based on the one or more associations.

Optical modules with virtual transport functions

A transport network, a node, and a method are disclosed. The transport network, the node, and the method detect a failure of a super channel originating from a sliceable light source that is routed through the transport network, by detecting an optical loss of signal by an optical power monitoring device, in presence or absence of an optical loss of signal of the complete band by at least one photo detector. This information is analyzed with a fault detection algorithm using a patch cable network configuration to determine a fault indication for a failure within the first node. The fault signal indicative of the fault indication is then passed to another node on the first path.

Method and system to prevent false restoration and protection in optical networks with a sliceable light source

An example system includes a transceiver and a microcontroller. The microcontroller is configured to receive first messages from a hub node via first network interfaces of the transceiver, and determine first logical identifiers associated with ingress data flows. Further, the microcontroller is configured to receive second messages from leaf nodes via second network interfaces of the transceiver, and determine second logical identifies associated with egress data flows. Further, the microcontroller is configured to generate a resource assignment map based on the first and logical identifiers, and to generate a command to cause the transceiver to transmit the egress data flows in accordance with the resource assignment map. The resource map indicates pairings between the ingress data flows and the egress data flows, and, for each of the pairings, a respective network resource assigned to transmit the egress data flow of the pairing to a respective one of the leaf nodes.

A terminal node, an optical network and/or a method are described in which a first processor of a first optical protection switching module having a first optical switch, and a second processor of a second optical protection switching module having a second optical switch coordinate switching of the first optical switch and the second optical switch upon detection of a first failure by the first processor, or the detection of a second failure by the second processor. The first processor monitors optical signals received by a first line port to determine a first failure in a first working path at a first layer (e.g., physical layer) within an optical communication model. The second processor monitors the optical signals received by another line port to determine a second failure in the first working path at a second layer (e.g., optical layer) within the optical communication model.

Multi layer protection control for coherent DWDM networks

A system and method is disclosed in which circuitry of a first controller of a first node on a first path within a transport network receives a first signal indicating a failure within the first path from a second controller. The first node is an end node of the first path. A first client signal failure clear signal is received from a second node upstream of the first node on the first path. The first client signal failure clear signal indicates that a non-restorable fault has been resolved such that the first path can be considered for carrying data traffic. The non-restorable fault is a failure at the source. Subsequent to receiving the first signal indicating the failure within the first path, a backward defect indication clear signal is transmitted to the second node, the backward defect indication clear signal indicating an absence of a failure in the first path.

Method and system to synchronize remote defect signaling and wavelength selective switch controls

Systems and methods are described in which circuitry of a first controller of a first node receives a first signal indicating an optical loss of signal within the first path. Circuitry of a second controller of the first node on the first path within a transport network generates a second signal indicating a failure within the first path. The first controller accessing a network topology database determines that restoration of the first path would be ineffective due to there being no alternate path, and signals a second node downstream in the first path with the second signal indicating the failure within the first path, and a third signal indicating that restoration of the first path would be ineffective due to there being no alternate path.

Method and system to prevent false restoration and protection in optical networks

Methods, nodes and control modules are disclosed. In the method, circuitry of a first node in a mesh network converts an optical layer in a working path between the first node and a second node, to a data stream in a digital layer. The working path carries data traffic from the first node to the second node in the optical layer of the mesh network when there is no failure in the working path. Circuitry of the first node in the mesh network detects a failure in the working path due to detection of an error in the data stream in the digital layer. The circuitry of the first node establishes, through transmission of at least one signal from the first node to the second node, a restoration path in the optical layer based on, at least in part, detection of the error in the data stream in the digital layer.
