A conductive composition includes a mono-acid hybrid that includes an unprotected, single reactive group. A process for the preparation of the novel compounds is also disclosed, which involves esterification reaction of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids or its derivatives with substituted hydroxy long-chain olefinic compounds. These compounds are suitable for forming latices, which form films at low minimum film forming temperatures (MFT) ranging from &minus;5 to 10&deg; C. and cure to above ambient glass transition (T ) polymers without the use of traditional organic cosolvents which contribute to environmental pollution via volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. These latices are therefore useful in waterborne coatings, contact and pressure sensitive adhesives, and inks.

Process for preparing a coating composition and product thereof

Novel latex or emulsion compositions containing internally plasticizing and crosslinkable monomers derived from traditional semi-drying or non-drying oils are disclosed and claimed. The monomers are ethylenically unsaturated esters of long-chain olefinic compounds. Preferred embodiments include latex formed from acrylate or methacrylate esters of hydroxy fatty acid esters derived from castor oil or lesquerella oil. A process for the synthesis of the latex composition is also disclosed, which involves (a) an esterification reaction of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or its derivatives with a substituted hydroxy long-chain olefinic compound; (b) subsequent polymerization of the so formed ethylenically unsaturated ester of a long-chain olefinic compound in an aqueous phase with at least one other copolymerizable monomer; and (c) blending so formed polymer with at least one drier and a surfactant to form the novel latex or emulsion compositions. These compositions form films at low minimum film forming temperatures (MFT) ranging from &minus;5 to 10&deg; C. and cure to above ambient glass transition (T ) polymers without the use of traditional organic cosolvents which contribute to environmental pollution via volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. Internally plasticized and low VOC latex compositions and applications thereof

Phenol aralkyistion polymers can be prepared by reaction among a phenolic monomer, at least one styrenic monomer and an aryl diolefin. A phenolic monomer can be initially aralkylated in the presence of an acid catalyst with a first portion of at least one styrenic monomer to obtain an aralkylated phenol. The aralkylated phenol thereafter can be reacted with an aryl diolefin to obtain a phenol aralkylation polymer. Optionally, (though preferably) the phenol aralkylation polymer is further aralkylated with a second portion of at least one styrenic monomer. By employing specific catalyst concentrations, reactant concentrations, reaction temperatures, and reaction times, the formation of mono-functional and non-functional by-products is substantially reduced.

Process for reducing mono-functional and non-functional by-products during aralkylation of phenolics

A lactone chain-extended polyester polyol of the present invention comprises the reaction product of a lactone and a previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound may comprise the reaction product of (i) a lactone or an alkoxylating agent selected from the group consisting of alkylene oxides and alkylene carbonates, and (ii) a phenolic aralkylation polymer comprising the reaction product of a phenolic monomer having at least two free reactive positions; a styrene derivative; and a coupling agent. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound also may be chain-extended by reacting with a lactam to produce a lactam chain-extended polyester polyamide. The polyols and polyamides of the present invention provide unique combinations of hard and soft functionalities, which translates into materials exhibiting a unique combination of toughness and hardness. These materials are especially suitable for use in high solids coatings and in the development of resins which can be readily processed into thermoset resins. The materials also may function as compatibilizers for thermoplastics.

Low MFT and high Tg , internally plasticizing, and low voc latex compositions

Poly(alkylene dicarboxylate) polymers and copolymers having tetraalkyl- or trialkylammonium ion end groups and methods of synthesis, thereof. The methylene-containing copolymers, in general, adhere to glass and metals, including aluminum, iron, and copper. Poly(methylene-co-ethylene terephthalate) is a clear film useful in the protection of metals or glass from corrosion or scratching. Glass may be bound to glass or to metal using the polymers of the present invention or metal to metal seals may be made.
