Novel benzophenone derivatives and methods of making and using the same are disclosed. The novel compounds can display highly active photoinitiation and photopolymerization properties.

Polymerization of compositions which include the compounds of the invention may be activated by irradiating the composition with ultraviolet light using conventional techniques and radiation sources to give greatly improved cure speeds. The compounds of the invention also show a significantly elevated level of reactivity at a narrow wavelength band, with a peak emission wavelength at or near 308 nm. Because of the increased level of activity, the photoinitiator can be used in considerably lower amounts.
