Novel procedures are described for the production of syngas fuel intermediates from abundantly available natural gas. The novel procedures include: (a) providing a double tubular hydrogen transfer reactor having an inner tubular wall defining a heated reaction zone containing a catalyst and an outer tubular wall defining an annular zone between the tubular walls, said inner tubular wall including a hydrogen semipermeable membrane portion adapted to permit diffusion of hydrogen therethrough from the reaction zone to the annular zone while being impervious to other gases, (b) passing through said catalytic reaction zone of a feedstock comprising a mixture of methane and oxygen or a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide or a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide and oxygen, (c) continuously removing from the reaction zone at least part of the hydrogen being formed by diffusion thereof through said hydrogen semipermeable membrane into said annular zone, (d) continuously removing diffused hydrogen from said annular zone and (e) continuously removing a product mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen from the reaction zone.

The selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen is effected by reacting nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide or a mixture thereof with a reducing agent consisting of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having 1 to 5 carbon atoms at a temperature ranging from about 250.degree. to, about 600.degree. C., in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal oxide selected from the group consisting of vanadium oxide, copper oxide, nickel oxide and iron oxide, the catalyst being supported on a porous carrier. The process of the invention enables one to substantially completely reduce NO.sub.x to harmless N.sub.2 in an efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner.

Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides

The direct conversion of methane to hythane, an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines, is effected by subjecting methane to a controlled oxidation with water vapor at a temperature of about 400.degree. to about 500.degree. C. and a pressure of about 1 to about 5 atmospheres, in the presence of a catalyst comprising palladium or a binary alloy thereof with another metal selected from the group consisting of elements belonging to Group IB, Group IIA, Group VIII and the lanthanide series of the Periodic Table, the catalyst being supported on a porous carrier. The direct conversion of methane to hythane under conditions of low temperature and pressure in accordance with the present invention enables hythane to be produced not only economically and efficiently, but also at or near vehicle fueling sites, thereby eliminating the storage and transportation of dangerously reactive hydrogen for mixing with methane or natural gas.

Direct conversion of methane to hythane

A process is described in which methane is reacted with acetylene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst containing fluoride to produce isobutene in high yields. The process may take place at room temperature or lower and atmospheric pressure. The conversion of acetylene typically approaches 100% and the methane conversion has been found to surpass stoichiometric requirements.

A process is described for the gas-phase condensation of natural gas or methane into gasoline-range hydrocarbons comprising the steps of: (a) reacting a mixture of methane and acetylene in the presence of a solid superacid catalyst to form isobutene, and (b) converting the isobutene product into gasoline-range hydrocarbons in the presence of a crystalline silicate zeolite catalyst.
