A method for operating a reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine, having an injector nozzle operable by a single valve element and configured to directly inject a fuel into a combustion chamber and having a piston including a piston crown and a piston recess, includes the steps of injecting the fuel by the injector nozzle into the combustion chamber in the form of separated jets of the fuel having different inclinations relative to a top surface of the piston crown and selectively setting the inclinations of the fuel jets depending on an engine load.

A method for operating a reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection. Injecting fuel in a lower part-load range, for the formation of a heterogeneous mixture, with a higher injection pressure centrally into a working space or a piston recess shortly before top dead center, or, optionally, in the case of very early injection (crank angle of 180&deg; to 20&deg; before top dead center), forming locally an ignitable homogeneous mixture with homogeneous combustion by defined charge stratification, controlled air movement in the cylinder and injection pressure combined with timed injection; injecting fuel in a middle part-load range, for a formation of a homogeneous mixture, with a lower injection pressure in a phase with a crank angle of 180&deg; to 20&deg; before top dead center; and injecting part of the fuel, in an upper part-load range ( ) and/or full-load range, first, for the formation of a homogeneous mixture, with a lower injection pressure into the working space or the piston recess in a phase with a crank angle of 180&deg; to 20&deg; before top dead center and, injecting the rest of the fuel, for the formation of a heterogeneous mixture, with a higher injection pressure into the working space or the piston recess in a phase around top dead center.

A gas-injection valve for injecting gaseous fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, comprising a valve housing and, disposed therein, a longitudinally displaceable piston having connected thereto a poppet valve for controlling an injection port, which poppet valve opens in the direction of gas flow, said piston separating a gas space from an operating space adapted to be pressurized by having hydraulic control fluid fed thereto by a pressure pump, and the gas pressure within the gas space alone being sufficient to move the poppet valve to and to hold it in its closed position when the operating space is depressurized.
