A method and an apparatus reduces particles in exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine by passing the exhaust gases through a microwave energy field in a resonator for applying energy and burning the particles. In order to improve the application of energy, the particles are agglomerated beforehand in a high-voltage field of an electrostatic filter.

Alternatively the whiskers are made of Si.sub.-3 N.sub.-4, Al.sub.-2 O.sub.-3, ZrO.sub.-2 or W and the matrix is made of W, Mo, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu or an alloy thereof.

Compound or composite powder with metallic or ceramic whiskers

The electrode is made by depositing a slurry as a first layer onto a solid electrolyte ceramic of stabilized ZrO.sub.2. The slurry is a blend of a powder of a ceramic electronic conductor such as La.sub.1-x Ca.sub.x Mn.sub.1+y 03 or La.sub.1-x SR.sub.x Sr.sub.x Mn.sub.1+y 03 and a powder of a ceramic ionic conductor being of the same kind as the electrolyte. Onto the first layer a slurry of powder of the same ceramic electronic conductor used in the first slurry is deposited as a second layer. The layers are deposited by spray coating or dipping and are fired simultaneously thereafter or sequentially following respective application.

A sensor measuring the partial oxygen pressure in furnace exhaust gas has an active layer of palladium. When the sensor is maintained at a particular temperature, for example about 700.degree. C., the palladium changes to palladium oxide at a specific air number, namely 1.2. The change from palladium to palladium oxide and vice versa causes a change in conductivity by a factor of approximately 20. This change in conductivity is a clearly defined output signal which can be adjusted to occur at any desired air number in the region from 1.05-1.4, depending upon the temperature at which the sensor is maintained. Two sensors may be used, each maintained at a different temperature so that a control region is defined as the air number region wherein the sensor maintained at the lower temperature is oxidized while the second sensor is reduced. Preferably, the active layer consists not only of the metal oxide but also of a ceramic component such as cerium oxide which is doped with 0.5-10% by volume of Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 or Ta.sub.2 O.sub.5.

A compound cell for performing an electrochemical reaction at high temperature consists essentially of hollow, cylindrical bodies of a ceramic electrolyte, rings of an electronically conductive material coaxially interposed between each pair of electrolyte bodies, annular layers of ceramic insulating material bonding each ring to at least one of the two adjacent electrolyte bodies, the bodies, rings, and annular layers being diffusion welded to each other to form a cylindrical, gas-tight tube. A pair of electrode layers is associated with each electrolyte body, one layer of the pair covering the associated body inside the tube and conductively engaging one of the two adjacent rings, the other electrode layer of the pair covering the associated body outside the tube and conductively engaging the other adjacent ring.
