The invention is a control device or directional drilling tool. The control device has an electromotor drive in the orienting device. The measuring and control device is situated between the orienting device and the drill string. Cable lead-throughs through the orienting device are eliminated. The electromotor drive of the orienting device can be actuated independently of drilling operations, making it possible to perform a rapid and precise performance of an orientation process while continuing drilling operations, reducing deviations from the planned drilling program.

The present invention pertains to a device and method for drilling a secondary or deflection hole from a cased drill hole in underground rock or geologic formations. The present invention comprises a drilling tool including a retractable pilot drilling unit driven by a fluid operated motor, the motor comprising a stator mounted on the interior of a tubular outer housing and a rotor mounted on the exterior of a tubular inner housing axially supported in said outer housing and rotationally free with respect thereto. The pilot drilling unit is rotationally fixed within the inner housing, but axially moveable therewithin so that pressure of drilling fluid used to drive the motor will also act on reaction surfaces of the pilot drilling unit to urge it axially forward. The top of the pilot drilling unit includes a fishing head for retracting the pilot drilling unit from the drilling tool, and reinserting it therein.

The present invention comprises an improved method and apparatus for taking core samples, wherein a core drilling assembly driven by a downhole fluid motor is retrievably housed within a drilling tool of larger diameter, and wherein a plurality of cores may be cut and retrieved to the surface by withdrawal of the core drilling assembly by including an extender in the core drilling assembly each time it is brought to the surface and returned to the drilling tool, and sequentially cutting another core without postdrilling the previously cored formation section. The extenders may be included either above or below the motor used to drive the core drilling assembly, and are preferably of tubular configuration with screw-threaded connectors at their ends for rapid insertion in and removal from the core drilling assembly.

An apparatus for producing pressure pulses in an oil well fluid medium is established which includes a main valve member moveable relative to a supporting member by a pressure gradient between two flow channels. The main valve body is longitudinally moveable relative to the supporting body, and a gap is provided between the two bodies. The gap is opened for fluid flow which prevents the development of dead water zones and the buildup of sedimentary deposits to prevent restriction of movement between the two bodies. The gap includes one or more throttle zones to assist in maintaining the necessary gradient between the two flow channels.

A tool face orientation of a directional drill bit within a borehole is efficiently communicated to the well surface by communicating only changes in the tool face orientation. In the first embodiment after the entire tool face orientation is measured and transmitted uphole, and thereafter changes of the tool face orientation as measured with respect to the center of spatially fixed sectorial ranges are transmitted uphole. The magnitude of the changes relative to the center of a fixed sectorial range, being smaller than the range of the entire tool face orientation, allow the subsequent transmission to be made using words of shorter length. Alternatively, the changes in tool face orientation may be measured with respect to a sliding reference point. The sliding reference point may, for example, be the mean value of the prior ten measurements and any previous mean values. The sliding sector will then be held until change in the tool face orientation cause the tool to go out of the sectorial range of the sliding reference point, at which point a new sliding reference is defined which inherently includes the tool face within its range.
