A control unit for a system and a method of operating a control unit have modules that are activated. Before activation of a certain module, inquiries are made to detect cross-dependencies with other modules that have already been activated. To do so, a first storage device and a second storage device containing this information are provided. A scheduler prevents modules which interfere with one another from being activated simultaneously.

A fault diagnostic device for monitoring and detecting faults in technical functions, in particular in technical functions of a motor vehicle, includes a plurality of monitoring devices for monitoring technical functions, whether they have a fault or not. A breather valve for the gas tank of an internal combustion engine having an adsorption filter which is linked to the atmosphere by a breather line which is controlled by a shut-off valve. The tank breather valve is constructed so that pressure build up in the fuel tank, the lines, and the adsorption filter do not lead to damage of the valves. The magnetic circuit of the shut-off valve provides that above a predetermined pressure in the adsorption filter, the generated pressure is sufficient to open the shut-off valve, thereby facilitating pressure relief without any damage. The low-pass-filtered portion is employed as a pressure-measuring signal, while the band-pass filtered portion is used as an acceleration-measuring signal. The pressure sensor is preferably installed in the tank-venting installation of a motor vehicle to measure the pressure differential relative to the surroundings. The acceleration-measuring signal is used to stop a recognition of engine misfiring, as soon as a rough road surface is recognized as a result of this signal.
