A catalyst which contains, in its active composition, from 0.05 to 1.0% by weight of at least one metal or compound of a metal of the 10th group of the Periodic Table of the Elements and from 0.05 to 1.0% by weight of at least one metal or compound of a metal of the 11th group of the Periodic Table of the Elements, with the weight ratio of the metal of the 11th group to the metal of the 10th group being from 0.95 to 1.05, and, as support, an SiO,-containing catalyst support having a BET surface area of from 2 to 400 m,/g, wherein at least 20% of the total pore volume of the catalyst is made up by pores having a diameter greater than 100 nanometers, can be used in processes for removing alkynes, dienes and/or monounsaturated hydrocarbons from streams of materials.

In the preparation of acetylene and synthesis gas by partial oxidation of hydrocarbons with oxygen, the feedstock gases are first separately preheated, then intensively mixed in a mixing zone, reacted after flowing through a burner block and then rapidly cooled. Acicular, magnetic iron oxide consisting of a core of gamma-iron(III) oxide and a ferrite shell containing a total of from 0.4 to 12% by weight of cobalt(II) ions and from 0.1 to 15% by weight of iron(II) ions, the percentages being based on the total amount of magnetic material, is prepared by a process in which an iron(II) hydroxide precipitate is applied to the gamma-iron(III) oxide core in a first stage and an iron-(II)/cobalt hydroxide precipitate is applied to the said core in a second stage, and the core is then converted to the ferrite shell by oxidation.
