A multi-spark gap having both a high power-follow current extinguishing capacity as well as a relatively low protective level in which a distance xbetween a first electrode and an adjacent second electrode, which together form a first individual spark gap, is larger than respective distances xbetween other adjacent electrode pairs of additional individual spark gaps. The distance xis at least 0.5 mm and the distances xof the additional individual spark gaps are at most 0.2 mm. Additionally, an ignition aid for igniting the first individual spark gap is provided, which aid has at least a resistive ignition element and a voltage-limiting element, wherein the ignition element is connected to an electric-arc combustion chamber of the first individual spark gap and is electrically connected on the one side to the first electrode and on the other side via the voltage-limiting element to the second contact element.

Multi-spark gap

The invention relates to a type-II overvoltage protection device having a varistor and a protective element, wherein the protective element has a first contact for connecting to a first potential of a supply network and a second contact that is connected to a first contact of the varistor, wherein the varistor further comprises a second contact for connecting to a second potential of a supply network, wherein the protective element has a fuse element that connects the first contact and the second contact of the protective element, wherein the protective element further comprises a third contact that is connected to the second contact of the varistor and is arranged so as to be near to but electrically insulated from the fuse element, wherein the fuse element has a constriction in the proximity of the neighboring contact, with the constriction being embodied such that the fuse element has an electrically conductive fluxing agent in the proximity of the constriction, with the fluxing agent having a lower fusion point than the fuse element itself, so that pulses corresponding to a load below the type-II rating do not result in a lasting change in the constriction, wherein the constriction, in conjunction with the fluxing agent, is dimensioned such that pulses corresponding to the limit range of the type-II rating result in the fusing of the fluxing agent into the fuse element, and wherein pulses corresponding to a load that is stronger and/or of greater duration than the type-II rating of the varistor result in the immediate disconnection of the fuse element.

Type-II overvoltage protection device

The invention relates to an overvoltage protection device with varistors, wherein a first varistor and a second varistor are connected in series, wherein the first varistor has a thermal disconnector, wherein the first varistor has a lower operating voltage than the second varistor, and wherein the first varistor has a lower energy absorption capacity than the second varistor, with the first varistor heating up more in the event of an overload and thereby causing the thermal disconnector to disconnect.

A surge arrester for the power supply of low-voltage systems, having a housing, two electrodes which are situated axially opposite one another, an arc combustion chamber formed in the interior of the housing, and a trigger aid. A spark gap is formed between the two electrodes so that an arc is produced when the spark gap between the two electrodes is triggered, the axial distance between end faces of the two electrodes being so large that the arc voltage is greater than the expected line voltage. Conversion of energy within the surge arrester is reduced by the arc combustion chamber having an inner region and at least one expansion region into which the arc can propagate after triggering. The inner region is arranged between the two electrodes and is delimited axially by the end faces of the electrodes and is delimited longitudinally by the at least one expansion region.

The subject matter of the invention concerns a varistor with an isolating arrester, wherein the isolating arrester can interrupt the flow of current through the varistor in the event of a fault, wherein the isolating arrester has a terminal contact that establishes an electrical contact to a first contact of the varistor, wherein the electrical contact is protected by a thermally softenable holding device, wherein the isolating arrester also has a detachment means which is biased by means of an energy accumulator and which, in the event of a fault, if the thermally softenable holding device softens, mechanically disconnects the terminal contact from the first contact of the varistor, and wherein the detachment means is embodied so as to be resistive in order to limit the current through the varistor and prevent electrical arcs.

A fuse has a first contact and a second contact, with the second contact being used to electrically contact the device to be protected. The fuse has a fuse element that connects the first contact to the second contact. The fuse also has an additional contact being arranged so as to be insulated from the first contact and insulated from the second contact and, in an untripped state, is contactless with respect to the fuse element, with the first contact being directly connected to the first potential during operation and with the device to be protected being directly connected to the second potential during operation, with the additional contact also being directly connected to the second potential during operation. A fourth contact makes external triggering available, with triggering resulting in an electric arc that causes the fuse element to fuse.

The object of the invention is an overvoltage protection apparatus with monitoring function having a parallel circuit of two branch circuits, wherein the first branch circuit has a first overvoltage protection device and a second overvoltage protection device that are connected in series, wherein the second branch circuit has a third device and a fourth device that are connected in series, wherein the first overvoltage device and the third device have a first shared voltage potential during operation, and wherein the second overvoltage device and the fourth device have a second shared voltage potential during operation, wherein a first measuring tap is provided between the first overvoltage protection device and the second overvoltage protection device and wherein a second measuring tap is provided between the third device and the fourth device, with a signal being derived from the voltage between the first measuring tap and the second measuring tap that provides state information in relation to the first overvoltage protection device and the second overvoltage protection device.

The object of the invention is an ignition circuit for a series connection of at least two spark gaps for limiting overvoltages with medium and high power, particularly overvoltages corresponding to pulse shapes 8/20 &#x3bc;s and 10/350 &#x3bc;s with amplitudes of about 10 kA to about 200 kA (class I arrester). The spark gaps are each equipped with at least one auxiliary electrode. The ignition circuit has a first varistor and a second varistor, with the ignition circuit being particularly suited to limiting overvoltages with medium power, particularly overvoltages corresponding to pulse shape 8/20 &#x3bc;s with amplitudes of about 10 to about 100 kA (class II arrester). The ignition circuit is designed to be connected to the auxiliary electrodes, with the ignition circuit Z having two ignition subcircuits. The first ignition subcircuit TZhas the first varistor VARand is designed to ignite the first spark gap. The second ignition subcircuit has the second varistor and is designed to ignite the second spark gap. Further objects of the invention are an overvoltage protection device with this kind of ignition circuit, as well as the use of a multi-contact varistor for triggering a spark gap.

Ignition circuit

The disclosure relates to a load current-bearing fuse with internal switch element. One example of the fuse includes a protective element with a first contact, a fuse element that connects the first contact with a second contact, and a protective element having a third contact that can be connected to a second potential of a supply network, but is electrically insulated from the fuse element. The fuse element is also disclosed to include a fluxing agent that has a lower fusion point that the fuse element itself. The fuse is further disclosed to include an internal switch element that monitors a protective element internally and can bring about a targeted disconnection.

An overvoltage protection element with a housing, an overvoltage-limiting component arranged in the housing, and with two connection elements for electrically connecting the overvoltage protection element to the current or signal path to be protected, wherein, normally, the connection elements are each in electrical contact with a pole of the overvoltage-limiting component. Reliable and effective electrical connection in the normal state and reliable isolation of a defective overvoltage-limiting component are ensured by the fact that a thermally expandable material is arranged within the housing in a way that, in the event of thermal overloading of the overvoltage-limiting component, the position of the overvoltage-limiting component is changed by expansion of the thermally expandable material relative to the position of the connection elements in a way that causes at least one pole of the overvoltage-limiting component to be out of electrical contact with the corresponding connection element.

An apparatus for short-circuit protection of a three-phase load in a three-phase system includes an input for connection of the apparatus to a three-phase network, an output for connection of the three-phase load to the apparatus, a means for producing an auxiliary short circuit in the three-phase network by ignition of the means, a means for identifying a short circuit at the three-phase load, and a means for generating an ignition pulse upon identification of the short circuit. The means for producing the auxiliary short circuit and the means for identifying the short circuit are provided in the current path between the input and the output. The means for producing the auxiliary short circuit is ignitable by the ignition pulse. The means for generating the ignition pulse is formed so that the ignition pulse can be generated by a short-circuit current established by the means for identifying the short circuit.

Electrical apparatus for the short-circuit protection of a three-phase load in a three-phase system

An overvoltage protection element with a housing, an overvoltage-limiting component arranged in the housing, and with two connection elements for electrically connecting the overvoltage protection element to the current or signal path to be protected, wherein, normally, the connection elements are each in electrically conductive contact with a pole of the overvoltage-limiting component. Reliable and effective electrical connection in the normal state and reliable isolation of a defective overvoltage-limiting component are ensured by the fact that a thermally expandable material is arranged within the housing in a way that, in the event of thermal overloading of the overvoltage-limiting component, the position of the overvoltage-limiting component is changed by expansion of the thermally expandable material relative to the position of the connection elements in a way that causes at least one pole of the overvoltage-limiting component to be out of electrically conductive contact with the corresponding connection element.

There is provided a surge protection device that includes (a) an input and an output, (b) a short-circuit-proof primary current path and a secondary current path between the input and the output, and (c) a fuse in a short-circuit-proof fuse box. The short-circuit-proof fuse box is arranged in the secondary current path, and (i) on one side of the secondary current path is contacted with the primary current path in a short-circuit-proof manner based on the primary current path, and (ii) on the other side of the secondary current path is contacted in a substantially short-circuit-proof manner based on the fuse. A help system for signalling and/or supply of devices for improving ignition behavior is arranged in the secondary current path, and the short-circuit-proof fuse box is also contacted to a short-circuit-proof discharge path so that a current can be guided by the help system current path.
