The invention relates to the use of mixed oxides made of cerium oxide, zirconium oxide, rare earth sesquioxide and niobium oxide as catalytically active materials for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia or a compound that can decompose to form ammonia in the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines in motor vehicles that are predominantly leanly operated, and to compositions or catalysts which contain said mixed oxides in combination with zeolite compounds and/or zeolite-like compounds and are suitable for the denitrogenation of lean motor vehicle exhaust gases in all essential operating states.

Mixed oxide materials for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases

The invention relates to a process for the coating of a catalyst support with a catalytically active coat using a coating dispersion, the catalyst support containing at least two partial structures which differ in their absorptivity for the coating dispersion. The process is characterized in that the absorptivity of the partial structures is modified relative to one another by precoating of the catalyst support with a material which can be burnt out or with liquid, and the catalytic coat is then applied to the filter body in a known manner, dried and/or calcined.

The invention relates to a catalyst for lowering the amount of NOin the lean exhaust gas from lean burn engines, comprising active aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide and at least one noble metal of the platinum group of the periodic table of the elements, as well as at least one nitrogen oxide storage material. The catalyst is characterized in that the magnesium oxide forms a homogeneous mixed oxide with aluminum oxide and is present in a concentration of about 1 to about 40 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the mixed oxide.

Catalyst for lowering the amount of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas from lean burn engines

A honeycomb body made from a ceramic material with improved radial pressure resistance that is of cylindrical shape and features a first and a second end face and a cylindrical shell and that is traversed from one end face to the other by axially parallel channels formed by channel walls and distributed across the cross section of the honeycomb body in a regular grid pattern, in which design an outer marginal zone of the honeycomb body, the thickness of which amounts to several channel diameters, encloses a central area. The increase in radial pressure resistance of the honeycomb body is achieved by reinforcing the ceramic material of the cylindrical shell and of the channel walls in the outer marginal zone of the honeycomb body by depositing on or in it one or several inorganic substances for the purpose of increasing its mechanical stability.

A catalyst for purifying the exhaust gases of diesel engines, which catalyst contains at least one zeolite and, additionally, at least one of the support oxides aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and aluminum silicate and at least one of the noble metals platinum, palladium, rhodium and iridium. In this catalyst the atoms of the noble metals have a mean oxidation number of less than &plus;2.5, on average more than 3 metal ligands and less than 3 oxygen ligands and are present on the zeolites and support oxides in the form of crystallites having a mean particle size of from 1 to 6 nm.

Catalyst for purifying the exhaust gases of diesel engines, and process for the preparation thereof

A process for coating the flow channels in a monolithic, cylindrically shaped catalyst carrier with a coating dispersion, wherein the carrier has two end faces which are connected to each other by flow channels arranged parallel to the axis of the cylinder, by vertically aligning the axis of the cylindrical carrier, placing a predetermined amount of coating dispersion from a storage container on the upper end face of the carrier and drawing the dispersion through the flow channels under suction, removing excess coating dispersion from the flow channels by emptying the flow channels under suction, returning the excess dispersion to the storage container and fixing the dispersion coating by calcination. The coating dispersion is drawn through the flow channels under suction at a rate of flow of 0.1 to 1 m/s and after completion of passage under suction the excess coating dispersion is removed from the flow channels by applying a suction impulse from below, wherein the suction air is drawn through the flow channels under suction at a rate of flow between 40 and 1 m/s and the excess coating dispersion discharged with the air stream is separated from the air stream within a time of less than 100 ms after discharge from the catalyst carrier.

Process for coating the flow channels in a monolithic catalyst carrier with a coating dispersion

A process for coating, with a suspension, a ceramic honeycomb body which has a cylindrical shape with two flat end-faces and one jacket, and through which channels parallel to the axis, formed by channel walls, run from one flat end-face to the other, the honeycomb body being coated by suitable processes. The honeycomb body is partially wetted and then coated.

Process for coating a ceramic honeycomb body

A powdered catalyst material based on aluminum oxide, which contains at least one basic metal oxide and at least one noble metal from the platinum group of the Periodic Table of Elements in addition to aluminum oxide. The catalyst material is obtainable by loading a support material already stabilized by basic oxides by renewed impregnation with further basic oxides. After drying and calcining this post-impregnated material at temperatures below &deg; C., the catalytically active noble metals are also incorporated into the support material by impregnation.

Catalyst material

A nitrogen oxide storage catalyst which contains at least one catalyst material and at least one nitrogen oxide storage component from the group of alkali and alkaline earth metals. The nitrogen oxide storage component, after completing catalyst preparation, is present as finely divided barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, a mixture or mixed crystals of the two sulfates, or as their complete or incomplete decomposition product with an average particle size of less than 1 &mgr;m. Barium sulfate and/or strontium sulfate act as feed materials for the active storage component in the storage catalyst according to the invention. As a result of the reductive exhaust gas compositions occurring under normal automobile driving conditions barium sulfate and strontium sulfate decompose to compounds which are able to store nitrogen oxides. This compensates for the loss of active storage components which occurs due to aging. Barium sulfate and/or strontium sulfate may be decomposed during production by means of reductive calcination in order to obtain a high initial loading of the catalyst with storage compounds. In this case, these sulfates are used as auxiliary agents in order to introduce the highest possible concentrations of storage compounds into the storage catalyst.

Nitrogen oxide storage catalyst

A nitrogen oxide storage material is disclosed which contains at least one storage component for nitrogen oxides in the form of an oxide, mixed oxide, carbonate or hydroxide of the alkaline earth metals magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium and the alkali metals potassium and caesium on a high surface area support material. The support material can be doped cerium oxide, cerium/zirconium mixed oxide, calcium titanate, strontium titanate, barium titanate, barium stannate, barium zirconate, magnesium oxide, lanthanum oxide, praseodymium oxide, samarium oxide, neodymium oxide, yttrium oxide, zirconium silicate, yttrium barium cuprate, lead titanate, tin titanate, bismuth titanate, lanthanum cobaltate, lanthanum manganate and barium cuprate or mixtures thereof.

Nitrogen oxide storage material and nitrogen oxide storing catalyst prepared therefrom

A process for preparing a catalyst which has a catalytically active coating of high surface area finely divided materials and catalytically active components on an inert carrier structure. A powder mixture of the finely divided materials used is impregnated with a solution of precursor compounds of the catalytically active components. By suitable combination of the finely divided materials and the precursor compounds and appropriate management of the impregnation process, a highly dispersed deposition and adsorption of the catalytically active components is ensured on the finely divided materials. Then ai aqueous coating dispersion is produced using the impregnated powder mixture and the carrier structure is coated therewith. The coating is then dried and calcined.

Process for preparing a catalyst

A sulfur oxide storage material contains a magnesium-aluminum spinel (MgO.Al O ) and can be used as a so-called &ldquo;sulfur trap&rdquo; to remove sulfur oxides from oxygen-containing exhaust gases of industrial processes. In particular, it can be used for the catalytic purification of exhaust gas from internal-combustion engines to remove the sulfur oxides from the exhaust gas in order to protect the exhaust gas catalysts from sulfur poisoning. The material displays a molar ratio of magnesium oxide to aluminum oxide in the range of over 1.1:1, and the magnesium oxide present in stoichiometric excess is homogeneously distributed in a highly disperse form in the storage material.

Storage material for sulfur oxides

A suspension, dispersion or emulsion is introduced into a burner. A two-stage after-treatment is then carried out. The resulting powder can be employed as a catalyst.

Process for the preparation of pulverulent heterogeneous substances

A catalyst system for the treatment of exhaust gases from a diesel engine includes a first and a second catalyst reducing catalyst arranged in series in an exhaust gas treatment system. The first catalyst is located near the engine in a region of the exhaust gas treatment system in which the exhaust gas temperature reaches temperatures of more than 200&deg; C. under full engine load. The second catalyst is located further from the engine in a region of the exhaust gas treatment system in which the exhaust gas temperature reaches a maximum of 500&deg; C. under full engine load. The maximum nitrogen oxides reduction in the first catalyst takes place at a lower temperature than the maximum nitrogen oxides reduction in the second catalyst.

Catalyst system for the treatment of exhaust gases from diesel engines

A process is disclosed for operating an exhaust gas treatment unit for an internal combustion engine which is operated with lean normalized air/fuel ratios over most of the operating period. The exhaust gas treatment unit contains a nitrogen oxides storage catalyst with an activity window .DELTA.T.sub.NOX for the storage of nitrogen oxides at normalized air/fuel ratios of greater than 1 and release of the nitrogen oxides at normalized air/fuel ratios of less than or equal to 1 and a sulfur trap, located upstream of the nitrogen oxides storage catalyst, with a sulfur desorption temperature T.sub.S,DeSOx above which the sulfates stored on the sulfur trap are decomposed at normalized air/fuel ratios of less than or equal to 1. The nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust gas are stored on the nitrogen oxides storage catalyst and the sulfur oxides are stored on the sulfur trap at normalized air/fuel ratios greater than 1 and exhaust gas temperatures T.sub.K within the activity window T.sub.NOX, wherein at the same time the exhaust gas temperature just upstream of the sulfur trap is lower than its sulfur desorption temperature T.sub.S,DeSOx. By cyclic lowering of the normalized air/fuel ratio in the exhaust gas to less than 1 the stored nitrogen oxides are released again from the storage catalyst. After each predetermined number N.sub.1 of nitrogen oxides storage cycles, sulfur is removed from the sulfur trap. This takes place by raising the exhaust gas temperature just upstream of the sulfur trap to above its sulfur desorption temperature T.sub.S,DeSOx and also lowering the normalized air/fuel ratio in the exhaust gas to less than 1.
