A thermal treatment unit for a printer is mountable on a carriage that moves across a printing medium. The thermal treatment unit comprises an emitter element to emit radiation towards the printing medium to thermally treat the printing medium, wherein the thermal treatment unit varies a radiation power output of the emitter element in terms of a spatial position of the carriage along a width direction of the printing medium.

An example apparatus to produce a three-dimensional object comprises a controller, a build area configured to receive a layer of particulate material, a printhead, and an ultraviolet light emitting diode energy source. The controller is to cause the printhead to deposit a liquid which absorbs ultraviolet radiation onto the layer of particulate material. The controller is further to cause the ultraviolet light emitting diode energy source to irradiate the liquid, after the liquid has been deposited onto the layer of particulate material, thereby to heat the liquid and cause a portion of the particulate material to solidify.

It is hereby disclosed a method to print on porous substrate by a printer comprising: a print zone; a conveyor to receive a porous substrate on a loading zone and to move the porous substrate along a transport direction between the print zone and the loading zone; a print engine positioned on the print zone for ejecting printing fluid towards the porous substrate; wherein the method comprises ejecting printing fluid towards a front side the porous substrate and, by a controller, activating a vacuum source as to exert a vacuum on a back side of the porous substrate being the vacuum exerted while the porous substrate is within the print zone.

Examples relate to methods to heat a print agent deposited on a print agent, print an image on a print media and heating systems for a heating a print agent deposited on a print media. A heating system comprises a radiation emitter to irradiate a print agent deposited on a print media, a reflector to reflect a radiation emitted by the radiation emitter back to the radiation emitter, and a displacing member to shift the heating system between a pre-heating position wherein the radiation reflected back to the radiation emitter has a higher magnitude and a heating position wherein the radiation reflected back to the radiation emitter has a lower magnitude.

Obstacle detection for a moving element activated by a motor is disclosed. The obstacle detection may comprise a controller to: move the element at a substantially constant speed; determine an actual torque value to move the element at the constant speed; determine a torque parameter based on the actual torque value; comparing the torque parameter with a threshold value; and determining the presence of an obstacle if the torque parameter is above the torque parameter threshold; wherein the torque parameter is determined based on a set of historical torque values and the actual torque value.

In an example, a media conveyor includes a media support platform having a suction hole, and a valve to selectively close the suction hole. A valve actuator to actuate the valve includes an air tube having an air inlet and a seal to selectively seal the air inlet.

In one example, a device for unwinding or winding multiple rolls of print substrate includes multiple spindles each to hold a roll of print substrate and a differential operatively connected to one end of each spindle. The spindles are aligned with one another lengthwise along a spindle axis and the differential is to output torque along a differential axis offset from the spindle axis to turn the spindles on the first axis.

It is disclosed a print-head carriage comprising base and a tab with a rotatable connection to the base on a first end, the rotation of the tab defining a closed position in which a second end opposite to the first end is in contact with the base and an open position in which the second end is separated from the base, the base being adapted to receive a print-head along an insertion direction when the tab is in the open position wherein the tab further comprises a latch located at a position remote to the rotatable connection comprising a lever, that separates from the tab in an unlocked position and moves towards the tab in a locked position; wherein the latch comprises a biasing mechanism to bias the latch to the locked position.

Measuring the thickness of a print media supported by a platen or belt by: moving a measurement bar to a first position to contact a surface of the platen or belt, moving the measurement bar to a second position to contact a surface of the print media when supported by the platen or belt, and determining the spatial difference between the first and second positions such as to measure the thickness of the print media. The measurement bar is arranged to cover a width of the print media when supported by the platen or belt.

In some examples, a method includes capturing an image of a light projection across a print substrate and a background surface beside the background surface. The method may also include identifying a break point in the image where a gap in the light projection occurs and determining a thickness of the print substrate, an edge location of the print substrate, or both, using the break point in the image.

Examples described herein include methods and devices for systems that include a conveyor belt comprising an exterior surface and an interior surface, an embedded optical sensor disposed proximate to the interior surface of the conveyor belt to optically detect movement of the conveyor belt, and a driver to move the conveyor belt based on the detected movement of the conveyor belt.

A method in a printer comprising a first printhead to dispense a first printing fluid and a second printhead to dispense a second printing fluid, the first and second printheads being arranged on a common scan axis that is substantially perpendicular to a media advance direction. The method comprises controlling movement of the first and second printheads relative to a media being printed, between a first index position and a second index position, the second index position being downstream of the first index position, and wherein the movement occurs during a time period between a forward scan and a reverse scan of the first and second printheads across a media being printed.
