The surgical system includes a reference device including one or more radiopaque markers, a first sensor configured to generate a first signal pertaining to orientation data of the reference device relative to a first coordinate system, a surgical instrument for coupling to an end effector, a second sensor configured to generate a second signal pertaining to orientation data of at least one of the end effector and the surgical instrument relative to a second coordinate system, and a navigation system. The navigation system is configured to determine an orientation of at least one of the end effector and the surgical instrument and superimpose a virtual representation of at least one of the end effector and the surgical instrument over the image based on the determined orientation and user input.

A handheld surgical system includes an instrument, a depth measurement attachment, and a controller. The instrument includes a housing and a motor that is positioned within the housing. The depth measurement attachment is removably coupled to the instrument. The depth measurement attachment includes a first sensor that is configured to provide a vibration signal associated with a vibration of the motor during a drilling process, a second sensor that is configured to provide a displacement signal associated with a displacement of a drill bit during the drilling process, and a controller. The controller is configured to receive the vibration signal and the displacement signal. The controller is also configured to determine a characteristic of the motor based on the vibration signal using an algorithm and determine a breakthrough event based on the motor characteristic and the displacement signal.

A surgical handpiece system for use with a drill bit having an identification feature that includes magnetic material. A handpiece transfers torque to the drill bit to rotate the drill bit. A measurement module that includes a housing is coupled to the handpiece. A measurement cannula made of a non-magnetic material surrounds the drill bit during operation. The measurement cannula extends forward or rearward relative to the housing and has a distal end adapted for placement against a workpiece. A transducer assembly generates a transducer signal based on a position of the measurement cannula relative to the housing. A sensor generates an identification signal responsive to a magnetic field or magnetoresistance of the identification feature of the drill bit through the measurement cannula during operation. A controller receives the identification signal and identifies the coupled drill bit corresponding to the received identification signal.

A handheld surgical instrument includes a motor that transmits rotational movement to a drill bit of the handheld surgical instrument. The drill bit extends through a depth measurement module with a depth measurement extension, and a cannula, which extends forward from the drill to measure bore depth. The depth measurement extension is moveably mounted to the drill so as to extend into the rotor bore of the motor. As the drill advances forward, the depth measurement extension remains static. As a result of the advancement of the drill, the rotor extends over the proximal end of the depth measurement extension. A controller is configured to determine a breakthrough time and a breakthrough displacement of the drill bit based on displacement data and derived signals. The controller is further configured to determine a proper length of a screw to be used in a fixation surgical procedure based on the displacement data.

One embodiment relates to a handheld surgical instrument that comprises a rotary surgical end effector and a coupler configured to cause rotation of the same. The handheld surgical instrument further comprises a motor, which is configured to drive a motor output region. The handheld surgical instrument further comprises a transmission, which defines a transmission input region that interfaces with the motor output region and a transmission output region coupled to the transmission input region. The transmission output region is operably coupled to the coupler, and the transmission is configured to alter the speed of the coupler relative to the motor output region. The motor output region and the transmission input region interface one another at a motor-transmission interface, and the motor-transmission interface comprises a motor-transmission backlash such that drive of the motor output region within the motor-transmission backlash does not cause rotation of the rotary surgical end effector.
