The present disclosure describes a dynamic geo-stationary actuation technique that may be incorporated into a rotary steerable system. An example method described herein may include receiving a first angular orientation of a rotating housingdisposed in a borehole. The first angular orientation may be received from a sensor assemblycoupled to the housing, and the housingmay be coupled to a drill bit. A desired drilling direction for the drill bitmay also be received. A first trigger signal to a first actuatorcoupled to the rotating housingmay be generated based, at least in part, on the first angular orientation and the desired drilling direction.

Dynamic geo-stationary actuation for a fully-rotating rotary steerable system

Roll reduction system for rotary steerable system. A well drilling system includes a tubular housing that attaches inline in a drill string and a bit drive shaft supported to rotate in the housing by a roll reduction system. The roll reduction system includes a first gear carried by the housing to rotate relative to the housing and coupled to rotate with the bit drive shaft, and a second gear carried by the housing to rotate relative to the housing and coupled to the first gear to rotate in an opposite direction to the first gear.

A well tool drilling tool can include a torque transfer mechanism with an inner mandrel, an outer housing, and at least one pawl which displaces radially and thereby selectively permits and prevents relative rotation between the inner mandrel and the outer housing. A drill string can include a drill bit, a drilling motor, and a torque transfer mechanism which permits rotation of the drill bit in only one direction relative to the drilling motor, the torque transfer mechanism including at least one pawl which displaces linearly and thereby prevents rotation of the drill bit in an opposite direction relative to the drilling motor.

Torque transfer mechanism for downhole drilling tools

An assembly for inclusion between a drill bit and a drill string, the assembly having an overrunning clutch mechanism that disengages the drill bit from the drill string during the 'slip' portion of a stick-slip cycle to allow the drill bit to freely rotate faster than the drill string. The assembly further includes a rotational vibration dampener operatively connected between the overrunning clutch and the drill bit. The vibration dampener may include a fluid chamber with viscous fluid or restrictions to fluid flow to effect dampening. During normal operation, the one-way overrunning clutch remains engaged to transfer torque between the drill string and bit, while the torsional damper is in its maximum displaced position to transfer the load. During slip, the drill bit is disengaged until its speed is lower than the drill string speed. Torsional vibration dampener dampens sudden impulse force of the overrunning clutch re-engaging.

In-line tortional vibration mitigation mechanism for oil well drilling assembly

A bent sub for use in a bottom hole assembly, between the power section of a mud motor and the drill bit, which can have its bend angle altered from the surface while remaining downhole, and a method for adjusting the bend of a bent sub. A biasing mechanism includes a number of linear actuators radially positioned about the tool centerline and oriented for axial motion. The linear actuators are connected to travelling blocks, which engage the upper end of the inner race a pivoting bearing assembly. The lower end of the inner race is connected to the mud motor bearing assembly. The linear actuators and can be actuated in coordination to tilt the inner race, and hence, the mud motor bearing assembly, to various selectable angles in any radial direction for control of tool face. In an embodiment, the actuators are battery-powered motor-driven lead screws.

An example downhole motor may include a first housing and a second housing coupled to the first housing at a movable joint. A turbine may be within the first housing in selective fluid communication with a bore of the first housing. A biasing mechanism may be coupled to the movable joint and the turbine. The biasing mechanism may alter an angle between a first longitudinal axis of the first housing and a second longitudinal axis of the second housing by altering an orientation of the movable joint.

A downhole drilling assembly includes a drill string having an inner fluid passageway. A fluid motor disposed within the drill string has a rotor operable to rotate relative to a stator in response to a circulating fluid received via the inner fluid passageway. A drive shaft and drill bit are operably associated with and operable to rotate with the rotor. A hydraulically actuated clutch disposed within the drill string has a first configuration, wherein a first clutch assembly is disengaged from a second clutch assembly such that the drive shaft and drill bit rotate relative to the drill string and, a second configuration, wherein the first clutch assembly engages the second clutch assembly responsive to hydraulic pressure generated by rotation of the drill string such that the drive shaft and drill bit rotate with the drill string.

Downhole drilling assembly having a hydraulically actuated clutch and method for use of same

A well tool apparatus for damping torsional vibration of a drill string comprises stabilizing members projecting radially outwards from a housing that is, in operation, rotationally integrated in the drill string, to stabilize the drill string by engagement with a borehole wall. The stabilizing members are displaceably mounted on the housing to permit limited angular movement thereof relative to the housing about its rotational axis. The well tool apparatus includes a hydraulic damping mechanism to damp angular displacement of the stabilizing members relative to the housing, thereby damping torsional vibration of the housing and the connected drill string, in use.

Methods and apparatus for mitigating downhole torsional vibration

A drilling optimization collar for use proximate a drilling tool within a wellbore includes a fiber optic sensor filament that is sized and configured to fit within a groove formed within the drilling optimization collar. The drilling optimization collar may be a pipe segment that is sized and configured to be installed in a drill string proximate the drilling tool, and may have a plurality of sensor elements. All or a portion of the sensor elements may be formed by discrete segments of the sensor filament, and as such, the sensor filament includes sensor elements that are configured to sense a condition of the wellbore and a load on the drilling optimization collar.

A directional drilling steering system is configured to direct a tubular sleeve arranged at the bottom of a drill string adjacent the drill bit at a selected tilt angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the uphole drill string and at a selected azimuth. Tilt angle can be achieved by axial movement of one or more pistons in engagement with the downhole tubular sleeve. Azimuth can be achieved by axial movement of the pistons or by rotation of the drill string. The movement of the downhole sleeve along the deviated path causes movement of the drill bit shaft and the drill bit coupled thereto.
