A method for immobilizing an amino-containing material to a substrate is described. The method involves providing a tethering compound with two reactive groups: a substrate reactive group and a fluoroalkoxycarbonyl group. The method further involves preparing a substrate-attached tethering group by reacting the substrate reactive group of the tethering compound with a complementary functional group on the surface of a substrate. The substrate-attached tethering group has a fluoroalkoxycarbonyl group that can be reacted with an amino-containing material to form an immobilization group that connects the amino-containing material to the substrate.

Surface-bound fluorinated esters for amine capture

Amino-containing materials can be attached to polymeric materials having a pendant amine capture group that includes a fluoroalkoxycarbonyl group. An amino-containing material can react with the pendant amine capture group by a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The product of the reaction is an alcohol and a pendant group that contains a carbonylimino group. The reaction results in the connection of the amino-containing material to the polymeric material. The polymeric materials are often disposed on a surface of a substrate and the connection of the amino-containing material to the polymeric material results in the immobilization of the amino-containing material on the substrate.

Polymeric substrates with fluoroalkoxycarbonyl groups for amine capture

A filter element in the form of a nonwoven self-supporting filtration web having rows of folded or corrugated spaced-apart pleats, the web containing continuous thermoplastic fibers a majority of which are aligned at 90&#xb0;&#xb1;20&#xb0; with respect to the row direction. The filter element can be made by forming rows of pleats in such a nonwoven web and cutting the web to a desired size and shape. The filter elements can provide improved mechanical and filtration properties and can exhibit reduced susceptibility to pleat deformation and the loss of space between pleats.

Compounds having two reactive functional groups are described that can be used to provide a connector group between a substrate and an amine-containing material. The first reactive functional group can be used to provide attachment to a surface of a substrate. The second reactive functional group is a N-sulfonylaminocarbonyl group that can be reacted with an amine-containing material, particularly a primary aliphatic amine, to form a carbonylimino-containing connector group. The invention also provides articles and methods for immobilizing amine-containing materials to a substrate.

A method of making an electret article, from a polymeric article that has a zeta potential of greater than or less than &#x2212;7.5 millivolts. The article is charged by contacting it with an aqueous liquid that has a pH and conductivity as follows: (i) if the article has a zeta potential of &#x2212;7.5 mV or less, then the contacting liquid has pH greater than 7 and a conductivity of 5 to 9,000 microSiemens per centimeter; and (ii) if the article has a zeta potential of greater than &#x2212;7.5 mV, then the contacting liquid has a pH of 7 or less and a conductivity of 5 to 5,500 microSiemens per centimeter. An electret article made in this manner can provide improved electret performance, particularly in electret filtration articles.

Crosslinked polymeric materials are described that contain pendant amine capture groups. The amine capture groups include N-sulfonyldicarboximide groups that can react with amine-containing materials by a ring opening reaction. Reaction mixtures used to prepare the crosslinked polymeric materials, articles containing the crosslinked polymeric materials, methods of making articles, and methods of immobilizing an amine-containing material are also described.
