A polycarbonate composition includes: 10 to 99 wt % of one or more bisphenol A polycarbonate homopolymers based on the total weight of the polycarbonate composition; a poly(carbonate-siloxane) having a siloxane content of 30 to 70 wt %, preferably 35 to 65 wt %, based on the total weight of the poly(carbonate-siloxane), optionally wherein the poly(carbonate-siloxane) is a poly(carbonate-siloxane) elastomer, in an amount effective to provide a total siloxane content of 0.5 to 10 wt % based on the total weight of the polycarbonate composition; and wherein a sample of the composition has improved chemical resistance as compared to a reference composition.

A process of preparing a compounded hydrostable poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate) includes providing a hydrostable poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate), compounding in an extruder the hydrostable poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate) and 0.05 wt % to 0.60 wt % of a multifunctional epoxide compounding stabilizer, based on the total weight of the compounded hydrostable poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate), under vacuum of 17000 to 85000 Pascals, and a torque of 30% to 75%, to provide the compounded hydrostable poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate). After compounding, at least one of the following apply: the inter-sample variability in molecular weight is less than 5%, wherein inter-sample variability is determined by comparing five 100 mil chips of the compounded hydrostable poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate); the % weight average molecular weight (MW) difference is less than 5% after hydroaging at 85&#xb0; C. and 85% humidity; or the compounded poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate) has less than 75 ppm of unreacted &#x2014;COOH end groups measured byP NMR.

A process for the manufacture of thermoplastic polymer particles include combining a first solution having a polyetherimide, a polycarbonate, or a combination thereof and an organic solvent with an aqueous solution including a surfactant, and agitating the resulting mixture using a shear force generating device operating at a preselected peripheral rotational speed to provide an emulsion. A polycarbonate composition includes: a continuous polycarbonate phase; discontinuous first domains distributed in the continuous phase, and comprising a core-shell silicone-(meth)acrylate impact modifier comprising a silicone elastomer core and a (meth)acrylate copolymer shell, wherein the first domains have an aspect ratio of at least 1.7, preferably at least 1.8; and discontinuous second domains distributed in the continuous phase, and comprising an alkenyl aromatic-olefin block copolymer impact modifier, wherein the second domains have an aspect ratio of at least 3, preferably at least 4, and a domain size of 6400 square nanometers or less, more preferably 5700 square nanometers or less. Optionally, the polycarbonate composition includes: a polycarbonate; a brominated polycarbonate different from the polycarbonate; a poly(carbonate-siloxane) comprising 30 to 70 weight percent of siloxane blocks; a core-shell silicone-(meth)acrylate impact modifier comprising a silicone elastomer core and an (meth)acrylate copolymer shell; and an alkenyl aromatic-olefin block copolymer impact modifier.

A polycarbonate copolymer contains aromatic carbonate units; optionally siloxane units; and resorcinol arylate ester units. The resorcinol arylate ester units of the polycarbonate copolymer are derived from a resorcinol composition having a hydroquinone content of 50 to 1200 parts per million, a catechol content of 5 to 29 parts per million, and a phenol content of 0 to 2400, each as determined by high performance liquid chromatography, and further comprising an acid stabilizer.

The process includes combining a first solution including a polycarbonate and a phosphorus-containing flame retardant or a flame retardant polycarbonate, and an organic solvent with a second solution including a surfactant and an aqueous solvent substantially immiscible with the organic solvent, under conditions of shear and temperature effective to provide an emulsion. At least a portion of the organic solvent is removed from the emulsion to provide an aqueous slurry having a plurality of particles, wherein the particles include the polycarbonate and the phosphorus-containing flame retardant or the flame retardant polycarbonate.

An interfacial process for preparing a poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate) includes providing an initial polymerization reaction mixture comprising an aliphatic C6-20 dicarboxylic acid, a bisphenol, an alkali hydroxide, and optionally a catalyst in a solvent system comprising water and an immiscible organic solvent, adding an initial portion of a carbonyl dihalide over a first time period while maintaining the reaction at a first pH from 7 to 8; and adding a second portion of the carbonyl dihalide over a second, subsequent time period while maintaining the reaction pH at a second pH from 9 to 12, to provide a product polymerization mixture, wherein the amount of alkali hydroxide in the initial polymerization reaction mixture is effective to increase the fraction of the first time period at a measured pH of 7 to 8 compared to the same reaction mixture with a higher amount of alkali hydroxide in the initial polymerization mixture.

Method for the manufacture of poly(aliphatic ester-carbonate)s and uses thereof

A method of preparing a poly(ester-carbonate) includes contacting an aqueous solution including a dicarboxylic acid with a first solution including phosgene and a first organic solvent in a tubular reactor to provide a first reaction mixture. A dihydroxy aromatic compound, the corresponding dialkali metal salt of the dihydroxy aromatic compound, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing, water, and a second organic solvent are combined to provide a second reaction mixture. The method further includes introducing the first reaction mixture, the second reaction mixture, and a second solution comprising phosgene to a tank reactor, wherein the tank reactor has a first pH of 7 to 10. The pH is optionally raised to 9 to 11 to provide a third reaction mixture including the poly(ester-carbonate). Poly(ester-carbonate)s prepared according to the method described herein are also disclosed.
