A base station in a cellular wireless communications system uses one or more control algorithms to control a transmission pattern of a 1&#xd7;RTT or DO discovery beacon. The transmission pattern enables access terminals using any one of multiple wake-up periods and wake-up offsets to discover all macrocell frequencies in a finite amount of time. In addition, for base stations allocating a single transmit chain to both 1&#xd7;RTT and DO beacons, the transmission pattern enables a definite maximum discovery time for both 1&#xd7;RTT and DO beacons for all access terminals entering the base station coverage.

Time-shared and concurrent multi-protocol beacon transmission design

One aspect of the disclosure provides a method for wireless communication by a station or wireless device. The method includes waking from a sleep state. Further, the method includes determining an availability of a transmission medium. In addition, in response to determining that the transmission medium is not available, the method can include determining a sleep time period, entering a second sleep state based on the sleep time period, and freezing a backoff counter for the duration of the second sleep state.

Systems and methods for low power medium access

Systems, methods, and devices for acknowledging communications from a plurality of wireless devices in a wireless network are described herein. In some embodiments, an access point for the wireless network transmits a group acknowledgment (ACK) to indicate whether communications (packets) from the plurality of wireless devices have been received or correctly decoded within some time interval. Each wireless device may have a different time interval associated with it. For some embodiments, the time interval for a wireless device is relative to when a previous group ACK was sent. A group ACK may include a bitmap. In some embodiments, the bitmap indicating whether a communication has been received or correctly decoded may be transmitted as part of a beacon.

Systems and methods for acknowledging communications from a plurality of devices

The deferral mechanism described herein may improve medium reuse in a wireless network with transmit power imbalances. For example, in one embodiment, an apparatus employing the deferral mechanism described herein may comprise a receiver to sense a data unit transmitted on a medium associated with the wireless network, wherein the data unit may comprise information indicating a transmit power associated therewith. Furthermore, the apparatus may comprise one or more processors to initiate a transmission on the medium associated with the wireless network if the apparatus is not an intended receiver of the sensed data unit, the transmit power associated with the data unit exceeds a transmit power associated with the apparatus, and a received power associated with the data unit does not equal or exceed a clear channel assessment threshold plus a difference between the transmit power associated with the data unit and the transmit power associated with the apparatus.
