Embodiments describe overlaying a broadcast multicast channel on top of a unicast network. Messages can be generated by protocols in a broadcast/multicast (BCMC) stack and tunneled through an IRTP of a serving access node. These messages can be transmitted on a BCMC channel and/or a unicast channel. Other messages can be generated by protocols in a unicast stack and tunneled to a B-IRTP of a BCMC Access node and transmitted on a BCMC channel to an access terminal.

Signaling and management of broadcast-multicast waveform embedded in a unicast waveform

Method and a system for multicast service notification in cellular telephone system to enable the cellular telephone systems to provide both multicast and point-to-point services are disclosed. Several embodiments describe the signaling interaction between an access network and subscriber stations belonging to a multicast group to allow the access network to properly notify the subscriber stations of a the multicast service. Such a signaling further allows the subscriber stations to recognize the multicast service notification to participate in the multicast service.

A method and apparatus for negotiating capability information for a broadcast service in a communication system. In one embodiment, the generic capabilities are pre-configured in BSC, which provides the generic capability information to MS and to PDSN based on a listing of available BC services and the corresponding capabilities. Another embodiment pre-configures PDSN with the generic capability information. According to still another embodiment, PDSN is pre-configured with the generic capability information, wherein the MS queries the PDSN directly for generic capability information via a PPP connection. In yet another embodiment, the MS queries the PCF, which in turn queries all of the PDSN in the system. The PDSN responsible for the BC responds to the query. Where multiple PDSNs may support the BC, the first to respond using multicast addressing obviates the need for the others to respond.

A route protocol is established whereby a mobile device can communicate to a multitude of (receiving) base stations though a tunnel created through a serving base station. A message that includes a Route Creation Header can be transmitted by the mobile device to create the tunnel. The Route Creation Header is reviewed by the receiving base station while the mobile device is in a Waiting-To-Open State. Various errors might occur with respect to the Route Creation Header. These errors can be conveyed to the mobile device by base station by setting one or more error code fields. Once the errors are resolved, another attempt to create a tunnel with base station can be made, if desired.

Method for segmented message transmission wherein each message is first divided into segments and the segments are fragmented. A segment parameter is applied to each segment, and a segment identifier to each fragment. The fragments are provided to a lower level for preparation into frames for transmission. One embodiment is applied to the transmission of short duration messages, such as control messages. A timer is used to detect an erasure within a plurality of transmission frames, wherein the timer uses an average inter-arrival time period between transmitted frames to determine a missing frame. In one embodiment, the time period is given as &#x3b1;*AIT, wherein &#x3b1; is a constant value, and AIT is the average inter-arrival time of frames.
