A summing transformer for a star-delta inverter having a single secondary winding for each group of primary windings for use in inverting variable frequency AC power into constant frequency AC power, the transformer comprising a plurality of core elements having principal legs on which primary windings are wound and secondary legs extending from said principal legs establishing flux paths, the legs of each core element defining apertures through which a single winding is magnetically linked to a group of primary windings.

An inexpensive autotransformer assembly adapted to withstand and operate under stingent conditions for permitting the flow of a fluid in both the axial and radial directions therethrough to cool both the core and the windings is disclosed. A first embodiment comprises an autotransformer assembly having a core and at least two groups of windings spaced apart thereon. The core includes a central cooling channel and a plurality of radial channels extending outwardly from the central cooling channel and terminating at openings in the outer surface of the core. A second embodiment comprises an autotransformer assembly having a core and at least two groups of windings thereon. A plurality of longitudinal spacers disposed on the outer surface of the core serve as a means for spacing the windings from the core in order to provide an axial coolant path along the outer surface of the core.

Radial cooled autotransformer assembly

A magnetic bearing (10) in accordance with the invention includes a rotatably supported member (14) having a cylindrical magnet (12) with first and second ends which respectively are first and second magnetic poles with a magnetic field produced by the magnet having a uniform strength around a circumference of the first and second ends; a first sensor (34 or 36) for sensing a direction and amount of radial movement of the rotatable member along a first axis (54 or 56) from a uniform spacing with respect to an annulus (35) surrounding the rotatable member and producing a first signal proportional to the direction and amount of movement along the first axis; and a first electromagnetic circuit (16 to 18) producing an electromagnetic field proportional to the first signal which is additive to the magnetic field along the first axis extending in a radial direction of increased radial spacing between the annulus and the rotatable member and which is subtractive from the magnetic field along the first axis extending in a radial direction of decreased spacing.

In this magneto caloric heat transfer system the working material comprises paramagnetic particles suspended in a fluid which circulates continuously in a closed loop path between a region of high magnetic intensity field and a region of low magnetic field intensity.

Magneto caloric system

A vapor compression cooling system operating at a pressure ratio of about 4 or less includes a compressor 10 having a inlet 12 and an outlet 14, a countercurrent condenser 20 connected to the compressor outlet 14 and a countercurrent evaporator 52 connected to the compressor inlet 12. A first heat exchanger 30 interconnects the condenser 20 and a second heat exchanger 38 which in turn is connected to the evaporator 52 via an expansion valve 46. The heat exchangers 30 and 38 have countercurrent flow paths and provide a path including an expansion valve 48 to the compressor inlet 12.

Low pressure ratio high efficiency cooling system

A refrigeration/cooling system including a compressor (12, 14, 16, 18) having an inlet (54) and an outlet (20), a countercurrent condenser (24) connected to the compressor outlet (20) and an countercurrent evaporator (30) connected to the compressor inlet (54). A heat exchanger (36) interconnects the condensor (24) and the evaporator (30). A first throttling valve (34) is interposed between the heat exchanger (36) and the evaporator (30) and a second throttling valve (64) is located in the system downstream of the condenser (24) and upstream of the evaporator (30) for providing an at least partially expanded refrigerant to the heat exchanger (36). A refrigerant return (50) interconnects the heat exchanger (36) and a portion of the compressor (16) for returning the partially expanded refrigerant to the compressor.
