An externalized entitlement management system comprises a policy administration point that is configured to receive one or more definitions or updates of entitlement policies specifying subjects, actions, and resources, and to update a first entitlement repository coupled to the policy administration point with the definitions or updates in response to receiving the definitions or updates; one or more policy decision points that are coupled to the policy administration point over a network; one or more policy enforcement points that are integrated into one or more respective first application programs, wherein each of the policy enforcement points is coupled to one of the policy decision points; and one or more action handlers in the policy administration point, wherein each of the action handlers is configured to intercept a particular action represented in an update to an entitlement policy, to transform the action into an entitlement update in a form compatible with a native entitlement mechanism of a second application program that does not have one of the policy enforcement points, to send the transformed entitlement update to the second application program, and to cause a rollback of the update of the first entitlement repository if the second application program fails to implement the entitlement update in the native entitlement mechanism.

Policy resolution in an entitlement management system

According to an aspect of the present invention, device descriptions specified using different device description (DD) specifications are converted (represented) into a single format. In an embodiment, the single format corresponds to extended markup language (XML). The device description in the single format is then examined to provide a user interface for management of the corresponding field devices. Due to such use of a common format, integration of field devices (into a management system) having device description defined according to a new device description specification, may be simplified.

Managing field devices having different device description specifications in a process control system

A client connected to a field device management station (FDMS) by a wireless path. An operator can issue commands to any field devices from the client. As a result, the operator can manage the field devices from any remote location. In addition, the FDMS may be connected to other clients by wire-based paths as well. As a result, commands from both wire-based and wireless clients may be channeled through the FDMS, thereby simplifying tracking of various of configuration changes and status of the field devices. According to another aspect of the present invention, the wireless client is connected to a field device by a wire-line medium. Connectivity between FDMS and field devices is established through wireless client, thereby providing path redundancy (in addition to control network).
