In order to fix two plates (3, 4) onto the cylinder formed by a sleeve (1) or by a plate cylinder of the intaglio printing machine, two axial grooves (2) are formed on the cylinder such that the plane of one of the lateral faces of each groove (2) forms an angle with the axis of the cylinder. A strip (5, 6), whose face adjacent to the end of the plate is perpendicular to said plate, is welded onto the concave face of the two ends of each plate (3, 4). The edge of each plate (3, 4) projecting beyond the corresponding strip (5, 6) is then cut off such that the edge of the plate forms a continuous surface with the face of the strip, and such that the sum of the lengths of the plates equals the length of the periphery of the cylinder. The plates are then arranged on the cylinder (1) by introducing the neighboring strips (5, 6) into a groove (2) and the free space in the groove is completed by a wedge-shaped strip (7) in order to tension the plates and obtain an edge-to-edge join.

Method for fixing printing plates onto a cylinder of an intaglio

In order to apply opposite axial forces to the lateral edges of each intaglio printing plate mounted on a plate cylinder or on a sleeve, the cylinder (1) is provided at its two lateral sides and for each lateral edge of each printing plate with an annular sector (5, 6, 7). These sectors have the same external diameter as the cylinder and are provided with screws (23) for attaching the lateral edges of each printing plate (2, 3, 4) thereto, with screws (16) in order to be mounted on the lateral sides of the cylinder (1) so as to be displaceable axially and with other screws (25) which are screwed into the sectors (5, 6, 7) and which abut the cylinder (1). Using these screws (25) and by way of the pressure which they exert against the cylinder, each printing plate may be positioned and tensioned axially. Furthermore, helical springs (19) are provided which apply compressive forces tending to move apart said annular sectors (5, 6, 7) of the cylinder (1) axially, and therefore to apply tensile forces in a permanent manner to the lateral edges of each printing plate. The ink duct is separated by at least one separating wall which is fastened to the base and is formed from two metal plates (4, 5), fastened at a distance from each other and between which a plastic intermediate plate (6) is mounted with a tight fit and so that it can be displaced and tilted and is guided by a pin (17) which is fastened between the plates and passes through an oblong hole in the said intermediate plate (6). This intermediate plate (6) has a front edge (6a) which has the shape of an arc of a circle corresponding to the periphery of the ink duct cylinder. In the use position, it is pressed against this periphery by two spring pins (9,10; 12,13) which act on its rear edge so as to ensure a leaktight contact with the said ink duct cylinder. A positioning pin (18), which is fastened to the said plate (6), allows it to be pulled into the withdrawn position, where it may be locked. The leak-tightness with the base of the ink duct is achieved by a plastic sealing strip (25, 26) provided on the lower edge of the metal plates.
