Systems, methods, and devices for obtaining consistently reproducible diagnostic measurements with a photoplethysmographic sensor are provided. In one embodiment, a method for obtaining such a diagnostic measurement includes applying a pressure between a photoplethysmographic sensor and a patient, increasing the pressure until the photoplethysmographic sensor outputs a plethysmographic waveform of minimal amplitude, decreasing the pressure by a predetermined fraction, and obtaining a diagnostic measurement using the photoplethysmographic sensor. The pressure may be applied using a pressure device that includes, for example, a clip, a wrap, an inflatable balloon or bladder, or an inflatable cuff, or any combination thereof.

Systems, methods, and devices for obtaining consistently reproducible diagnostic measurements with a photoplethysmographic sensor are provided. An airway device is provided that may track the flow of respiratory gases through the device with sensing elements at a plurality of locations along the gas flow path of the device. Such a device may be useful for assessing a variety of clinical states, for adjusting patient ventilator settings, or for determining whether or not an airway device has been properly inserted into a patient airway.

Carbon dioxide-sensing airway products and technique for using the same

The present disclosure relates to a carbon dioxide detector having a borosilicate substrate. It may also have a carbon dioxide responsive indicator solution disposed on the borosilicate substrate. The carbon dioxide detector may be part of a carbon dioxide detector system also including an air intake operably connected to the housing to allow air to reach the carbon dioxide detector. The carbon dioxide detector may include a borosilicate substrate and a carbon dioxide responsive indicator solution disposed on the borosilicate substrate. This detector may be part of a further system, such as a resuscitation system. The detector may be made by wetting a borosilicate substrate with a carbon dioxide responsive indicator solution and drying the indicator solution to immobilize it and form a dried carbon dioxide detector. It may be used to detect the concentration of carbon dioxide in an air sample by exposing the detector to the sample.

A sensor is provided that is appropriate for optical detection of dissolved carbon dioxide. Such a sensor may be used for transcutaneous detection of carbon dioxide in the tissue. Alternatively, such sensors may be inserted into the tissue. Detection of dissolved carbon dioxide in the tissue may serve as a useful clinical marker for physicians.

Methods and systems for calculating body fluid metrics are provided. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present technique, there is provided a method for calculating body fluid metrics by acquiring an absorbance spectrum of a subject's tissue over a range of near-infrared light, performing a multi-linear regression of the absorbance spectrum of the subject's tissue in relation to absorbance spectra of tissue constituents, and calculating body fluid metrics based on the results of the multi-linear regression. A system is provided having a sensor for emitting the light into the subject's tissue and detecting reflected, scattered, or transmitted light, a spectrometer for processing the detected light and generating the absorbance spectrum of the subject's tissue, memory for storing absorbance spectra of the tissue constituents and a multi-linear regression model, and a processor for performing the multi-linear regression and calculating the body fluid metrics.
