An electro-optic device comprising an electro-optic crystal substrate, an optical waveguide path in the crystal adjacent the substrate surface and an electrode spaced from the surface by a buffer layer is provided with enhanced operating stability by forming the buffer layer of a transparent electronically conductive material. Preferred buffer materials are electronically conductive gallium-indium-oxide and electronically conductive zinc-indium-tin-oxide.

In an imaging system for carrier profiling of a device structure, a doped semiconductor tip is utilized as an active dynamic sensing element for successively probing spaced-apart portions of the structure. At each probe position, the bias voltage applied between the tip and the structure is varied. While the bias voltage is being varied, a measurement is taken of the change in capacitance that occurs between the tip and the structure. These measurements provide an accurate high-resolution high-contrast image that is representative of the carrier profile of the probed portions of the device structure.

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for imaging acoustic fields in high-frequency acoustic resonators. More particularly, the invention is directed to a scanning RF mode microscope system that detects and monitors vibration of high frequency resonators that vibrate in the frequency range of approximately 1 MHz to 20 GHz. The system then maps with sub-Angstrom resolution vibration modes of such devices and obtains quantitative measurements of the piezoelectric properties of the materials.

Summarily described, the invention embraces an improved image-acquisition apparatus of the type having a transparent platen with an inner surface and outer surface, where a workpiece having graphic matter is positioned on the outer surface of the platen and an image-acquisition device disposed adjacent the inner surface of the platen transfers an image of the graphic matter to another medium. The inventive improvement comprises a preview display feature comprising a preview display screen visible to the user and an image-processing system disposed proximal the inner surface of the platen coupled to the preview display screen. The image-processing system images a region of the platen defining a platen-image and forms the platen-image upon the display screen. The image-processing system may also form upon the display screen a frame-image for indicating the portion of the platen bounding the image to be transferred so a user may determine whether a workpiece is placed in a desired orientation before operating the apparatus. The improved image-acquisition apparatus may comprise a photocopy machine, a scanner, or a facsimile machine, and preferably the platen-image is formed in real-time characteristics.

An improved platen-based image acquisition apparatus has a preview feature which enables the user to view anticipated output from the apparatus so adjustments may be made before operating the apparatus in orienting a workpiece upon the platen or in selecting image control features. The preview feature comprises a display screen visible to the user and an image-processing system coupled to the preview display screen. The image-processing system images a region of the platen to define the platen-image and forms the platen-image upon the display screen. It may simultaneously form upon the screen a frame-image for indicating the portion of the platen bounding the image to be processed so a user can determine whether a workpiece is positioned in a desired orientation before operating the apparatus. The improved image-acquisition apparatus may comprise a photocopy machine, a scanner, or a facsimile machine, and preferably the platen-image is formed in real-time characteristics.

A piezoelectric micropositioning device includes, in one embodiment, four single-crystal piezoelectric bodies cut in the form of single-crystal parallel slabs from a single larger single crystal. Each of the single-crystal slabs has a separate electrode attached to an opposing major surface. One of the end faces of each of the slabs is fixed to a substrate; the other of the end faces is fixed to a holder. In response to voltages applied to the electrodes, the holder can be moved in two or three linearly independent directions, depending upon the applied voltages. In another embodiment, only a single piezoelectric body, preferably in the shape of a column and in conjunction with at least four electrodes located on the side surfaces of the column, is required for such motion in two or three directions.

A non-tilting positioner for a micropositioning device constructed of piezoelectric plate actuators each arranged with a pair of opposed parallel edges respectively coupled to first and second elements. A first surface of each plate is divided into quadrants, with first electrodes in each of the quadrants. At least one second electrode is provided on the opposed surface. Electric voltages are applied to the first and second electrodes with appropriate polarities so as to generate an electric field through the thickness of the plate which is of a first polarity in a first pair of diagonally opposite quadrants and is of the opposite polarity in the second pair of diagonally opposite quadrants. Movement along a line parallel to the plane of the plate is thereby effected. Movement in a third orthogonal direction can also be attained by selecting an appropriate electrode pattern. A compact design with double the range is attained by providing at least two of the aforedescribed actuators which are arranged with their plates in parallel or coplanar relation to each other, with a rigid intermediate element being coupled to one end of each of the actuator plates. This 'doubling back' of the plates is inherently thermally compensated and eliminates parasitic vertical motion associated with the desired horizontal motion.

A scanning probe microscope positioner including an elongated rigid member which is controllably tilted in a predictable manner. One end of the rigid member is subjected to differential motion on opposite sides of its longitudinal axis so as to cause its opposite end to partake of lateral displacement which is a magnification of the differential motion. By a careful selection of component materials and sizes, inherent thermal compensation can be attained.
