A cutting insert for mounting on a tool holder of a cutting tool, comprises a front cutting portion having an operative front surface associated with at least one cutting edge, and a trailing mounting portion. The trailing mounting portion has upper, lower and side walls extending from the front cutting portion to a rear abutment wall of the trailing mounting portion oriented generally co-directionally with said operative front surface. The side walls of the trailing mounting portion meet with the rear abutment wall at rear edges. The rear abutment wall comprises two lateral surfaces and a central surface therebetween, the lateral surfaces converging from the rear edges in the direction towards the front cutting portion, and the central surface protruding, in the direction away from the front cutting portion, rearwardly from the lateral surfaces and meeting therewith at merging edge regions.

Cutting insert

A rotary cutting tool with a longitudinal axis of rotation, has a cutting head formed with at least two chip evacuation flutes and at least two body portions therebetween. The body portions bear, at a front face of the cutting head, a plurality of cutting inserts mounted so that their operative cutting edges lie substantially in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation. A first body portion bears a first outer cutting insert and a second body portion bears a second outer cutting insert. The operative cutting edge of the second outer cutting insert is substantially shorter than the operative cutting edge of the first outer cutting insert, and their outermost ends are substantially equidistant from the axis of rotation and are spaced therefrom at a distance defining a cutting radius of the cutting tool.

Rotary cutting tool

An exchangeable cutting insert comprises a front cutting portion having an operative front surface with two lower corners and at least one upper corner, and a trailing mounting portion extending rearwardly therefrom. The front cutting portion is formed with a major cutting edge extending between the two lower corners and a minor side edge extending between one of the lower corners and said upper corner. The minor side edge is substantially perpendicular to the major cutting edge. The major cutting edge has two trailing extremities associated with the lower corners, and having a leading extremity which protrudes outwardly and is raised upwardly relative to the trailing extremities.

Milling cutting insert

A cutting insert has upper, lower and side surfaces and at least one cutting edge formed adjacent the insert lower surface and extending between two adjacent insert corners so as to, at least partially, protrude outwardly therefrom. The cutting edge lies in a plane which slopes upwardly from the insert lower surface at an exterior acute angle .alpha. and which intersects the insert lower surface at an intersection line passing through end points of the cutting edge associated with the insert corners.

An exchangeable cutting insert having a substantially prismatic shape is disclosed. The insert has an upper rake surface, an opposite, substantially parallel base surface and side surfaces, adjacent side surfaces intersecting at an insert corner. Each side surface also intersects with the rake surface so as to define a cutting edge. Each cutting edge comprises a major cutting edge portion extending from one insert corner and merging with a succeeding, associated minor cutting edge portion, which terminates in a successive insert corner. Chip diverting ribs respectively associated with each of the cutting edges are formed on the rake surface. Each rib extends from a region adjacent the merger of the major and minor cutting edge portions on its associated cutting edge, and is substantially coextensive with the region of merger and is spaced from this region by a portion of the rake surface.

A cutting insert for a rotary cutter tool, said insert being of substantially parallelepipedal shape, having a pair of opposite, parallel, major cutting edges of length L and a pair of opposite subsidiary cutting edges, each subsidiary cutting edges being transversely directed with respect to the major cutting edges and comprising at least two successive, angularly disposed, component subsidiary cutting edges, a first component cutting edge of each subsidiary cutting edge merging, via a rounded nose portion, with an adjacent end of a major cutting edge and defining therewith an angle .theta..sub.1 lying between 50.degree.-70.degree., a further component cutting edge of each subsidiary cutting edge merging with an adjacent end of an opposite major cutting edge and defining therewith an angle .theta..sub.2 lying between 20.degree.-40.degree.; the total projected lengths of the component subsidiary cutting edges of each subsidiary cutting edge being approximately 0.6 L.

A cutting insert for a rotary routing cutter tool, the insert being of substantially parallelepipedal shape and having a first pair of elongated cutting edges substantially parallel to a rotary axis of the insert, each cutting edge of the first pair being defined between contiguous rake and relief surfaces of the insert; a second pair of cutting edges transversely directed with respect to the first pair, each cutting edge of the second pair comprising first and second successive cutting portions, the first cutting edge portion merging with an adjacent cutting edge of the first pair via a rounded insert corner, the adjacent cutting edges defining at the corner a substantially acute angle; the second cutting edge portion sloping towards a base of the insert so as substantially to intersect the rotary axis and so as to merge with an adjacent cutting edge of the first pair via a coupling portion which slopes away from the insert base.
