A mechanism is provided for authenticating and using a personal voice profile. The voice profile may be issued by a trusted third party, such as a certification authority. The personal voice profile may include information for generating a digest or digital signature for text messages. A speech synthesis system may speak the text message using the voice characteristics, such as prosodic characteristics, only if the voice profile is authenticated and the text message is valid and free of tampering.

The present invention provides a computer implemented method, data processing system and computer program product for running a diagnostic test on an I/O adapter. The data processing system communicates a stop command to a functional device driver; wherein the functional device driver is configured to communicate with the I/O adapter. The data processing system determines whether the functional device driver has completed storing a state of the I/O adapter. The data processing system loads a diagnostic device driver for communicating with the I/O adapter. The data processing system applies test inputs to the diagnostic device driver, wherein at least one test input is presented to the I/O adapter. The data processing system receives test results from the diagnostic device driver.

Method and apparatus for device driver state storage during diagnostic phase

A primary I/O adapter and a redundant I/O adapter of a data processing system are assigned to support access to a system resource. While the primary I/O adapter is in service and the redundant I/O adapter is not in service in providing access to the system resource, a fail over command is issued to remove the primary I/O adapter from service and place the redundant I/O adapter in service in supporting access to the system resource. While the redundant I/O adapter is in service and the primary I/O adapter is not in service in providing access to the system resource, diagnostic testing on the primary I/O adapter is performed. In response to the diagnostic testing revealing no fault in the primary I/O adapter, a fail back command is issued to restore the primary I/O adapter to service and to remove the redundant I/O adapter from service.

Non-disruptive I/O adapter diagnostic testing

A diagnostic control methodology provides reduced disruption of device operation when performing diagnostics on devices within a computer system. A diagnostic application notifies a device driver that controls a particular device that diagnostics should be performed during a period of low activity on the device. In response to receiving the notification, the device driver waits for a time of low activity and either notifies the application to unload the device driver and load a diagnostic device driver, or enters a diagnostic mode directly if such operation is supported by the functional device driver. A timeout duration can be specified, and may be set by the notification, so that the diagnostics will be performed within the timeout period even if a time of low activity has not occurred by the expiration of the timeout.

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for displaying information within a browser. Server browser information is stored on a web server. The server browser information includes a set of first category categories and a set of second category categories. An indication of whether a user is on a public system or a private system is received by the web server. Responsive to receiving the indication that the user is on a public system, only the set of public categories of the browser information is displayed to the user.

A mechanism for multiple instant messaging (IM) sessions associated with a single user name is provided. A frontend server receives user login requests and routes the instant messaging system to a back-end server. Each login associated with a particular user name is routed to the same backend server (or IM host). Messages targeted to a recipient having a plurality of active IM sessions are broadcast to all the active sessions. Messages targeted to recipients having a single IM session are unicast.

A plurality of data packets encoded according to a first protocol are received which encapsulate data encoded according to a second protocol. A first source address is extracted from the packets according to the first protocol, it is determined whether or not the first source address is a substantial duplicate of a known assigned address. If it is a duplicate, a second source address is extracted from the encapsulated data according to the second protocol, and the first source address and said second source address are provided in an enhanced error log so that a system administrator may correct the duplicate assigned address. Enhanced embodiments of the invention included analysis of data encapsulated by a third, fourth and subsequent protocols, and automatic determination of each protocol encoding format.

A system and method for managing parallel SCSI device functionality is presented. A user sends a request to a vendor whereby the request corresponds to the user changing the functionality of one of the user's SCSI devices. The vendor generates and sends a key that includes a password and a functionality value to the user. The user extracts the password, extracts the functionality value, and includes them in a command descriptor block. The user includes the command descriptor block in a SCSI command, and sends the SCSI command to the user's SCSI device whereupon the SCSI device validates the password and reconfigures itself based upon the functionality value. The SCSI device returns a message to the user indicating whether the reconfiguring process was successful. In turn, the user forwards the message to the vendor so the vendor may bill the user accordingly.

System and method for on-demand computing for parallel SCSI

A method and apparatus for handling power consumption of a bus-controlled component such that the power requirements of the bus-controlled component are met without drawing excessive power from the computer bus. The apparatus of the present invention includes two embodiment of a bus power handling device that enables power to be obtained directly from a power supply and from a bus slot. In a first embodiment, the bus power handling device fits between the bus slot and the bus-controlled component and enable the component to obtain power directly from a power supply and from the bus slot. In a second embodiment, the bus power handling device is located on the bus-controlled component and allows connection to the power supply and the bus slot. The method of the present invention includes a technique to draw additional power required for the bus-controlled component directly from a power supply. In particular, the method of the present invention includes redirecting power leads of a bus-controlled component from the bus connection to a bus power-handling device and connecting the bus power-handling device to a power supply. In addition, the method includes ensuring that the bus-controlled component does not draw power from the bus connection than allowed by the computer bus specification.

An evaluation system and method for computer products that uses a unified diagnostics platform having a switching multiplexor to generate a plurality of computer systems and computer environments. The evaluation system of the present invention includes a unified diagnostics platform that facilitates a variety of different computer systems by connecting computer peripherals, processors and operating systems. The switching multiplexor may be a plurality of switches allowing multiple combinations and configurations of devices connected to the unified diagnostics platform. The switching multiplexor is controlled using a controller that may be a hardware or a software selector. The evaluation method of the present invention includes a method for evaluating a computer product on a plurality of computer systems using the unified diagnostics platform.

Unified diagnostics platform system and method for evaluating computer products

A method for testing a computer bus using a bridge chip having a freeze-on-error option that enables a computer system's central processing unit (CPU) to recover and continue processing even when the computer bus is not functional. The testing method of the present invention remains transparent to a user and can be accomplished while performing standard diagnostics tests. In general, the present invention injects an input/output (I/O) error into a specific bus slot of the computer bus to test the functionality (such as the error recovery capability) of the bus. The present invention then recovers from the failure condition without having the computer system shutdown or stop working and without having to restart the computer system. More specifically, the method for testing a computer bus according to the present invention includes enabling the freeze-on-error option on the bridge chip, injecting an error into the specified computer bus slot and recovering from the injected error. The error recover capability of the computer bus is determined by examining the status of the bus slots both with the injected error condition and without the injected error condition.
