A plasmonic device including a support layer extending along a first direction and a second direction, an insulating layer on the support layer, and a plasmonic layer on the insulating layer and defining a cavity extending along the first direction, the cavity having a three-dimensionally (3D) tapered structure and being configured to propagate an electromagnetic field along the first direction and to concentrate the electromagnetic field at a tip of the cavity, wherein the support layer, the insulating layer, and the plasmonic layer define an opening therein, the opening being at the tip of the cavity and being configured to pass-through target molecules of a solution present on the plasmonic layer.

Electrically switchable photonic material and method of forming

A biosensor includes a periodic crystalline structure first layer, and an amorphous crystalline structure second layer. The first and second layers are formed from a biocompatible silicone having a Young's Modulus E between 0.4 and 2.0 MPa. The biosensor has a pressure dependent NIR resonance peak shift of less than 15 nm over a field of view of 40°, and has an optical pressure sensitivity of between 0.38 and 2.6 nm/mm Hg. The biosensor may be formed by forming a 3D crystalline structure having a periodic amorphous crystalline first layer and an amorphous crystalline second layer. Voids of the 3D crystalline structure are filled with the biocompatible silicone/polydimethylsiloxane a material. The 3D crystalline structure is removed to form an inverse structure having a first volume of an amorphous arrangement of voids and a second volume of a periodic arrangement of voids.

Nanophotonic sensor implants with 3D hybrid periodic-amorphous photonic crystals for wide-angle monitoring of long-term in-vivo intraocular pressure field

A thin-film optical device disclosed herein includes a metalens able to modulate the phase of incident light. The metalens includes a thin-film layer having a first index of refraction, an embedded layer within the thin-film layer, and the embedded layer having a second index of refraction greater than or equal to 1.5 and less than or equal to 3.0 times the first index of refraction. The embedded layer may fill a plurality of holes formed on the thin film layer, with the depth, width, and spacing of holes all contribute to modulating the phase of light traveling through the metalens.

On-chip phase modulating thin film optical elements

Optical spectrometers may be used to determine the spectral components of electromagnetic waves. Spectrometers may be large, bulky devices and may require waves to enter at a nearly direct angle of incidence in order to record a measurement. What is disclosed is an ultra-compact spectrometer with nanophotonic components as light dispersion technology. Nanophotonic components may contain metasurfaces and Bragg filters. Each metasurface may contain light scattering nanostructures that may be randomized to create a large input angle, and the Bragg filter may result in the light dispersion independent of the input angle. The spectrometer may be capable of handling about 200 nm bandwidth. The ultra-compact spectrometer may be able to read image data in the visible (400-600 nm) and to read spectral data in the near-infrared (700-900 nm) wavelength range. The surface area of the spectrometer may be about 1 mm, allowing it to fit on mobile devices.

Image sensor and method of operating

A smart contact lens includes a contact lens, a nanostructures layer, a first sensor, a connector, and a smart module. The nanostructures layer may be anti-bacterial. The smart contact lens may be worn on an eye or may be implanted within an eye. The nanostructures layer is fabricated by depositing a colloidal dispersion onto an electrostatically-coated substrate. The colloidal dispersion is then removed and nanoholes are etched. The electrostatic coating is removed and a biocompatible material is spin-coated onto the substrate. Upon removal, a quasi-randomly distributed nanostructures layer forms.

System and method of developing nanostructured multifunctional smart contact lens

A pixel for an image sensor includes a microbolometer sensor portion, a visible image sensor portion and an output path. The microbolometer sensor portion outputs a signal corresponding to an infrared (IR) image sensed by the microbolometer sensor portion. The visible image sensor portion outputs a signal corresponding to a visible image sensed by the visible image sensor portion. The output path is shared by the microbolometer and the visible image sensor portions, and is controlled to selectively output the signal corresponding to the IR image or the signal corresponding to the visible image. The output path may be further shared with a visible image sensor portion of an additional pixel, in which case the output path may be controlled to selectively to also output the signal corresponding to a visible image of the additional pixel.

LWIR sensor with capacitive microbolometer and hybrid visible/LWIR sensor

A metasurface device includes a dielectric layer, an aluminum nanodisk and an aluminum layer. The dielectric layer includes top and bottom surfaces that are opposite each other. The dielectric layer also includes at least one ring-like cavity that extends between the top and bottom surfaces of the dielectric layer. The aluminum nanodisk is formed in the at least one ring-like cavity in the dielectric layer. The aluminum layer is formed on the dielectric layer and includes at least one ring-like cavity that extends between top and bottom surfaces of the aluminum layer. Each ring-like cavity in the aluminum layer corresponds to a ring-like cavity in the dielectric layer. Two or more analytes may emit fluorescence in response to light of a predetermined wavelength being incident on the metasurface device and in which the two or more analytes are present at the dielectric layer.

Aluminum metasurfaces for highly sensitive and enhanced detection of analytes for smartphone diagnostics and methods for making and using the same

A metalens includes one or more regions of nanostructures. A first region of nanostructures directs a first field of view (FOV) of light incident on the first region of nanostructures to a first region of an image plane. A second region of nanostructures directs a second FOV of light incident on the second region of nanostructures to a second region of the image plane in which the second FOV is different from the first FOV, and the second region of the image plane is different from the first region of the image plane. A third region of nanostructures directs a third FOV of light to a third region of the image plane, in which the third FOV is different from the first FOV and the second FOV, and the third region of the image plane is different from the first region and the second region of the image plane.

Progressive metalens for sensing system

An electronic device including a light source and a detector are provided. The light source includes an electromagnetic spectral emission source configured to output an electromagnetic spectral emission, a polarization optical element configured to polarize the electromagnetic spectral emission, a collimation optical element configured to focus or collimate the electromagnetic spectral emission into narrow or tight beam to reduce diffusion, and a diffractive optical element configured to separate the electromagnetic spectral emission into a predetermined arrangement.

Polarized photoplethysmography (PPG) biosensors, arrays and systems

An imaging device includes: a sensor to detect a first target spectrum, the first target spectrum corresponding to a thermal imaging region of an infrared (IR) spectrum; and an optical device to transmit external light to the sensor, the optical device including: a substrate; and a plurality of nanostructures on the substrate, and to collimate at least the first target spectrum in the external light on the sensor. The plurality of nanostructures are spaced apart from each other, and at least one of the plurality of nanostructures has a different geometric size from that of another.

Optical device for a thermal sensor and a hybrid thermal sensor

A multicamera device includes: a first sensor to detect a first spectrum of external light; a second sensor to detect a second spectrum of the external light; and an optic overlapping with the first and second sensors. The optic includes: a substrate; a first reflective layer on the substrate; and an optical layer between the first sensor and the substrate, the optical layer to transmit the first spectrum of the external light to the first sensor, and reflect the second spectrum of the external light toward the first reflective layer, and the first reflective layer is to reflect the second spectrum of the external light in a direction toward the second sensor.

Folded optic for multicamera device and multicamera device including the same

An image sensor includes polarizing filters and spectral filters that provide on-chip simultaneous full Stokes polarization parameters (both linear and circular polarization) and multi/hyper spectral imaging. A polarizing filter polarizes incident light into a predetermined linear direction. The light-polarizing filter includes a wire grid and an array of phase-modulating nanostructures. The wire grid includes at least one wire that includes a series of metal-insulator-metal wire structures. The array of phase-modulating nanostructures is formed on the wire grid and changes a phase of the incident light a predetermined amount. A phase-modulating nanostructure is a high-dielectric-index nanostructure that changes of incident light based on a first width and a second width of the phase-modulating nanostructure in which the first width is perpendicular to the second width.

On-chip simultaneous full stokes polarization (linear + circular) and (multi/hyper) spectral imaging

A surface coating configured to locally enhance ultraviolet light density of ultraviolet light incident on the surface coating. The surface coating includes a dielectric layer, a conductive layer on the dielectric layer, a series of nano-openings in the dielectric layer and the conductive layer, a series of nano-antennae in the series of nano-openings, and a dielectric gap between the series of nano-antennas and the conductive layer. The conductive layer and the nano-antennae both include a UV plasmonic material.
