A method is provided for radar ranging using an IR-UWB radar transceiver. The range is determined by measuring a time required by a transmitted pulse to be reflected by an object and returned to the transceiver. The method includes transmitting a ranging signal having a predetermined sequence of positive and negative pulses using a transmitter of the transceiver. A receiver of the transceiver receives a signal having a reflected portion and a feedthrough portion. In the method, the receiver cancels the feedthrough portion using a delayed pulse polarity signal such that when the delayed pulse polarity signal is multiplied and accumulated with the received signal, the feedthrough portion is canceled, and the reflected portion is amplified. In another embodiment, a transceiver is provided that cancels the feedthrough portion while amplifying the reflected portion. Cancelling the feedthrough portion allows short-range operation by removing a blind range of the transceiver.

Embodiments of a method and a device are disclosed. In an embodiment, a method for operating an ultra-wideband (UWB) device is disclosed. The method involves powering down a first receive path of a multipath UWB device while leaving a second receive path of the multipath UWB device powered up, powering down channel estimation, tracking, and demodulation functions of the second receive path, and performing an acquisition function using the second receive path while the first receive path is powered down and while the channel estimation, tracking, and demodulation functions of the second receive path are powered down.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) receiver device and method for operating a UWB device

There is described a method of determining an MRC coefficient vector for a RAKE receiver. The method comprises (a) estimating a channel impulse response vector, (b) estimating a noise variance vector, (c) calculating a multiplication factor vector based on the estimated channel impulse response vector and the estimated noise variance vector, (d) calculating a modified channel impulse response vector by multiplying each element in the estimated channel response vector with a corresponding element in the multiplication factor vector, and (e) calculating the MRC coefficient vector as the complex conjugate of the modified channel impulse response vector. Optimizing MRC coefficients for RAKE receiver for increasing SNR

A method and device using a single transmitter (TX) and/or a single receiver (RX) is provided for determining an angle measurement between the transmitter and receiver for an ultra-wideband (UWB) system. A plurality of RX antennas is coupled to the receiver and a plurality of TX antennas is coupled to the transmitter. An IEEE 802.15.4z standard provides a silent period or gap before and after scrambled timestamp sequences (STS) in a frame. An active antenna is switched to a different antenna in the gaps. This allows the angle measurements to be performed with only a single transmitter and receiver within one channel impulse response (CIR) measurement cycle.

Embodiments of a method and a device are disclosed. In an embodiment, a method for operating an impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) device is disclosed. The method involves acquiring a signal, integrating one or more synchronization symbols in a synchronization field of the signal to determine an initial channel impulse response (CIR) measurement, and detecting whether a start-of-frame delimiter (SFD) field of the signal is identified during integration. When the SFD field of the signal is identified, the method further involves ceasing integration of the one or more synchronization symbols, scaling the initial CIR measurement, and determining a final CIR measurement based on the scaled CIR measurement. When the SFD field is not identified, the method further involves incrementing a counter configured to count the number of the one or more synchronization symbols integrated, and continuing integration of the one or more synchronization symbols until the SFD field is identified.

A communication system including an analog front end and an automatic gain controller. The analog front end includes at least one amplifier for amplifying a received analog signal and an analog to digital converter that converts the analog signal to digital samples. The automatic gain controller includes comparator circuitry, counter circuitry, and a gain controller. The comparator circuitry compares each of the digital samples with an upper threshold and a lower threshold. The counter circuitry counts a high count number of the digital samples having magnitudes that are greater than the upper threshold during each count window and counts a low count number of the digital samples having magnitudes that are less than the lower threshold during the count window. The gain controller adjusts a gain of the at least one amplifier by an amount based on the high count number and the low count number.

Embodiments are provided for a method of operating a receiver system, the receiver system comprising one or more channels, the method comprising: monitoring a residual DC (direct current) offset in a present channel by sampling an output of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) of the present channel; adjusting a DCO (direct current offset) correction signal that corresponds to the residual DC offset in response to an absolute value of the residual DC offset exceeding a programmable DCO threshold; and subtracting the DCO correction signal from an analog signal provided to the ADC to reduce the residual DC offset below the programmable DCO threshold.

A device includes a near field communication (NFC) module for generating an electromagnetic carrier signal and modulating the carrier signal according to data to be transmitted, and an antenna coupled to and driven by the NFC module with the modulated carrier signal. The device includes an analog front end coupled between the NFC module and the antenna. The device further includes a digital gain control (DGC) block for controlling gains in a first and second baseband amplifiers (BBAs). The DGC block includes a first clipping detector for correlating in-phase input signals with a subcarrier pattern and a second clipping detector for correlating quadrature input signals with the subcarrier pattern, and further includes a signal energy correction block adapted to output a number of correction ticks for a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) based on a number of gain updates performed for the first or the second BBAs.

Designs of devices having digital phase locked loop (DPLL) circuits that include multiple digital feedback loops to generate high frequency clock signals by a digitally controlled oscillator (DCO). A time-to-digital converter (TDC) module is provided in such a DPLL circuit to receive an input reference clock signal and a first feedback clock signal from a first digital feedback loop and produces a digital TDC output indicative of a first phase error caused by a difference in time between the input reference clock signal and the first feedback clock signal. A second digital feedback loop is provided to generate a second digital feedback signal indicative of a second phase error caused by a difference in frequency between a desired clock signal and a generated clock signal generated by the DCO. The first and second digital feedback loops are coupled to the DCO to generate the high frequency clock signals.
