A method of manufacturing a feature in a part with a cutting tool, includes machining a semi-finished shape of the feature, determining an actual position of at least one target point on a surface of the semi-finished shape, and computing a difference between the determined position of the at least one target point and a nominal position of the at least one target point on a digitized model of the part having the semi-finished shape of the feature. As a function of the difference, a correction to a position of the cutting tool on a nominal tool path to achieve the final shape of the feature from the semi-finished shape is determined, and the correction is used to define a corrected tool path. The finished shape of the feature is then machined with the cutting tool by moving the cutting tool along the corrected tool path.

Method of manufacturing a part of an aircraft engine

A method of machining a feature in a component using a machine having a support rotatable about a rotation axis and having a cutting tool movable relative to the component, the component being mounted on the support for rotation about a central axis of the component, the method includes: determining coordinates of at least three points on a reference surface of the component, the at least three points being circumferentially offset from one another relative to the central axis; determining an angular correction to apply to the cutting tool based on the coordinates of the at least three points; and machining the feature in the component using the cutting tool angled with the angular correction.

Method of machining a feature in an aircraft engine component

A machining system includes a machining assembly, a rotary table, a dimensional measurement assembly, and a controller. The controller is configured to control the dimensional measurement assembly to identify first position and a first orientation for a point on a surface of a workpiece with at least one dimensional measurement sensor, determine a first machine-workpiece vector and a first rotation-workpiece vector for the point, control the rotary table to rotate the workpiece about a rotational axis by a rotation angle, calculate a second position and a second orientation for the point subsequent to rotating the workpiece, update a workpiece position and a workpiece orientation in a part coordinate system (PCS) for the workpiece using the second position and the second orientation, and control the machining assembly to machine the workpiece using the updated workpiece position and the updated workpiece orientation.

System and method for machining a workpiece installed on a rotary table

A method for calibrating a machining system includes providing the machining system which includes a base, a cantilevered arm, and a rotary table positioned at the second arm end of the cantilevered arm. The rotary table is rotatable relative to the cantilevered arm about a first axis. The first axis has a first unloaded position and a first unloaded orientation with the machining system in an unloaded condition. The method further includes installing a measurement artifact on the rotary table, measuring a first position of the measurement artifact, and installing a load on the rotary table. The first axis has a first loaded position and a first loaded orientation with the machining system in a loaded condition. The method further includes measuring a second position of the measurement artifact and determining a positional deviation of the second position from the first position.

System and method for correcting machine load effect on kinematic accuracy

A system and method for manufacturing a component is provided that includes a CNC machine tool, a correction module, and a system controller. The CMM module is controllable to determine a set of multi-axis coordinates surface points on the component. The correction module is in communication with the CMM module and stored reference inspection data. The system controller is in communication with the CNC machine tool, the correction module, and stored instructions. The instructions when executed cause the system controller to: a) control the CNC machine tool to modify a surface of the component; b) control the CMM module to determine multi-axis coordinates for surface points; c) determine surface position variances using the reference inspection data and the multi-axis coordinates; d) determine if surface position variances exceed a threshold; and e) create correction action instructions for controlling the CNC machine if surface position variances exceed the threshold.

System and method for machining a component

There is described a system for manufacturing a part. The system generally has a receiving area receiving said part, a first reference gauge and a second reference gauge which are subjected to common environmental conditions, said first reference gauge having a first nominal dimension and said second reference gauge having a second nominal dimension different from said first nominal dimension; a measurement device measuring dimensions of said first and second reference gauges, and measuring dimensions of said part; and a controller communicatively coupled to said measurement device, said controller determining a calibration curve by performing a mathematical fit based on said first and second nominal dimensions and said measured dimensions of said first and second reference gauges; and constructing a machine-readable dataset representative of said part, including modifying said measured dimensions of said part based on said calibration curve.

Method and system for manufacturing a part

A part measuring kit for a rotary table on a machine bed includes a part fixture mountable on the rotary table for retaining a part to be measured and/or an object having known dimensions. The kit further includes a measuring device mountable on the machine bed and movable relative to the rotary table for taking measurements of the part to be measured and/or the object having known dimensions, wherein the rotary table is rotatable between each taken measurement. The kit further includes a calibration offset calculator for calculating a calibration offset for the measuring device by comparing taken measurements of the object having known dimensions with the known dimensions, and correcting taken measurements of the part to be measured via the calculated calibration offset.

Methods for measuring part size and runout

A method of determining a radius of a cutting end of a tool for a turning machine using a touch probe is provided. One of the cutting end and the touch probe is movable relative to a reference frame having a first axis and a second axis and having a reference point trackable in the reference frame. The method comprises establishing a first contact point and recording a first coordinate of the reference point on the first axis; establishing a second contact point and recording a second coordinate of the reference point on the second axis; establishing a third contact point and recording a third coordinate of the reference point on the first axis and a fourth coordinate of the reference point on the second axis upon contact; and determining a radius of the cutting end based on the first, second, third and fourth coordinates.
