Apparatus and methods for assembling an electronic device and components thereof are provided. The electronic device may include a housing and a cover inserted into an opening in the housing. The electronic device may also include a first assembly that may be inserted into the housing through a first end, and a second assembly that may be inserted into the housing through a second end. The electronic device may also include end cap assemblies. In some embodiments, the electronic device may include an input mechanism coupled to the housing and a plate coupled to the housing. In some embodiments, a connector of the electronic device may be mounted on a circuit board by inserting a fixture into the connector, mounting the connector to a portion of the circuit board, removing the fixture from the connector, and separating the portion of the circuit board from another portion of the circuit board.

An electrolyte containment structure for an electrode jelly roll and electrolyte in a portable power source is described. The electrolyte containment structure comprises metal foil, such as metal foil sleeve, coupled to and partially surrounding a rigid frame. The rigid frame can protect the electrode jelly roll edges from crush events. To prevent shorts, the metal foil can be coated in plastic, which can insulate the metal foil from the electrode jelly roll. Further, the plastic can serve as a bonding and sealing agent. For instance, the metal foil can be coupled to the rigid frame using a thermal bonding method involving melting of the plastic. The rigid frame can provide a platform for connector pads and safety circuitry associated with the portable power source. The connector pads and safety circuitry can be assembled as modular components, which can simplify the assembly process The containment structure provides features associated with a pouch cell battery design, such as a light-weight metal foil pouch, but can be utilized in a portable computing device without being enclosed in a hard casing traditionally associated with pouch cell battery designs.

Various embodiments of connectors and connector assemblies provide modified structural features to meet evolving industrial design requirements while maintaining backward compatibility. In one embodiment, alignment posts on the two sides of a plug connector are substantially removed and the remaining connector shell reshaped so as to preserve alignment capability. Other pre-existing features such as alignment grooves and some or all springy raised tabs can be eliminated resulting in a more compact and monolithic structure for the connector without impacting functionality or backward compatibility. In another embodiment, a trim ring is molded to the base of the connector to form an integrated unit. The integrated unit results in a reduced size of the connector when it is incorporated into other devices such as a docking station. In yet another embodiment, a printed circuit board is integrated into the boot of a connector assembly to act as an intermediate connection mechanism between the cable wires and the connector pins. Other functionality such as identification circuitry or electrostatic discharge protection circuitry can be incorporated on to the integrated printed circuit board.

Backward compatible connector system

A cable may be provided having a noise-suppression ferrite loaded magnetic tape wrapped in a spiral. The cable may have a strengthening cord at its core. Signal wires such as data wires and power wires may surround the strengthening cord. The signal wires may have copper cores that are coated with polytetrafluoroethylene insulating coatings. A metallized polyester tape may be wrapped around the signal wires to reduce electromagnetic interference. A braided copper shield may be formed over the metallized polyester tape. The magnetic tape may be wrapped around the metal braid. One or both edges of the magnetic tape may have uncovered areas in which no magnetic material is present. The cable may have connectors its ends. The magnetic tape wrap may extend from one connector to the other.

A monolithic bail-delatch mechanism is provided for a module plugged into a cage. The bail-delatch mechanism is a single monolithic unit that includes a living hinge connecting a bail and a delatch clip. The living hinge, the bail, and the delatch clip may be made of a single injection molded plastic part. The bail may include cantilever hooks for securing the bail against the module in a latched position. The delatch clip may include a spring mechanism having two spring arms for locking the bail-delatch mechanism to the module, and a delatch fork having tines with wedges for releasing a post of the module from a latch tab of the cage.

A fiber optic module includes a first housing insert molded with an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield, an optoelectronic subassembly mounted in the first housing, and a second housing mounted to the first housing to enclose the optoelectronic subassembly. The EMI shield includes a conductive mesh and conductive contact fingers. The first housing includes a non-conductive housing floor, non-conductive housing sidewalls, and a non-conductive nose defining at least one connector receptacle, wherein the housing floor and the housing sidewalls are injection molded through the mesh of the EMI shield to be integral with the nose and so that the fingers at least partially surround the nose.
