An electrochemical detection system which specifically detects selected nucleic acid segments is described. The system utilizes biological probes such as nucleic acid or peptide nucleic acid probes which are complementary to and specifically hybridize with selected nucleic acid segments in order to generate a measurable current when an amperometric potential is applied. The electrochemical signal can be quantified.

Electrochemical detection of nucleic acid sequences

A method of repelling an insect pest such as a tick, mosquito or cockroach comprises applying to a subject or substrate, in an amount effect to repel the insect pest, a compound of Formula I: wherein R is C4-C20 linear or branched alkyl. Particularly preferred compounds of Formula (I) are 2-tridecanone and 2-undecanone.

Method of repelling insects

The present invention provides non-peptide organic compounds that have a structure analogous to or reminiscent of the TMOF structure and have pesticidal activity. Thus the present invention concerns pesticidal compounds that inhibit digestion in pests by terminating or otherwise blocking synthesis of digestive enzymes by activating a TMOF receptor (collectively referred to herein as &ldquo;pesticidal compounds&rdquo;). The pesticidal compounds and other compounds of the present invention are usefully employed in the control of pests, particularly insect pests such as mosquitoes, which ingest blood.

Pesticidal activity of functionalized alkenes

Methods of assaying insects for pesticide resistance and to identify insect species are based on feeding disruption caused by insecticide such as the biopesticide toxin (Bt). Further provided are methods for monitoring insecticide resistance in a population of insects, as well as methods of screening compounds for insecticidal activity. Insecticide resistance can be assessed at the level of an individual insect or at population levels. Apparatus and dehydrated insect meal pads useful in such assays are described.

Insecticide resistance assay

Methods of assaying insects for pesticide resistance and to identify insect species are based on feeding disruption caused by pesticides such as the biopesticide Bacillus thuringiensis toxin (Bt). The assay end-point is feeding disruption, measured by the fecal production of insects exposed to a diagnostic dose of pesticide in a test diet. Pesticide resistance can be assessed at the level of an individual insect or at population levels. Apparatus useful in such assays are described.
