A machine for feeding rolls of web material to a utilization device that is adapted to draw the web material into the utilization device. The roll machine includes a frame carrying a carriage that supports a pair of arms having respective chucks that are adapted to move toward and away from each other for engaging and disengaging with the core of a roll that is being supported and fed. An overhead drive arrangement is used for driving the periphery of the roll in combination with a torque roller for maintaining tension in the web. A gravity loop of the material has its position sensed for control of the roll drive means in a manner to match the rate of use by the utilization device.

Roll support and feed apparatus

A system for inspecting and characterizing continuous web material such as may be wound into a roll. This system includes a recording storage means for providing a duplicate image of the web material and a device for reviewing the recording storage means image to detect a predetermined characterisitc of the image such as a defect therein. The position along the image is detected and a switch is responsive to both the content information and position information to record an indicia of image position corresponding to detection of the predetermined characteristic.

Web material inspection system

A system for monitoring ink flow from an ink storage tank to at least one ink fountain of a high-speed, web-fed printing press employing a scale for measuring the weight of the ink storage tank and comparing weight signals from the scale at successive times to determine the weight of ink consumed over the interval between readings. A pump is associated with the storage tank for pumping the ink to the fountain via coupling lines. An ink level sensor detects the level of ink in the fountain and provides an ink demand signal for operating a value means in the ink coupling line to in turn cause ink flow to the fountain so as to provide replenishment of ink thereat. With the use of plural fountains, means are provided for prioritizing delivery to the fountains so that individual ink comsumption on a per fountain basis can be determined. In this regard, the system also employs a volume sensor preferably in the form of a pump stroke positon sensor for determining incremental weight delivery per stroke.

Ink motor system

A web feed system for a laser printer that controls the feeding of web through the printer to a receiving device. The system includes an input feed station and an output feed station. At the output feed station there is a shock absorbing support roller and a series of rollers including a torque roller that support the web in a detection loop. Several features are incorporated to permit ease of transition between box and roll feed states.

Ink monitor system

A touch screen input system for use with a display screen having a photo-active display surface including a controllable sweeping beam. The system includes at least one photo-detector in combination with detection circuitry for continuously registering the position of the beam in the display surface. A pointer is adapted to reflect light from the beam to the photo-detector to provide a latch signal which is used to hold a signal identifying display screen location corresponding to pointer means location.

Touch screen input system

An automatic method and associated apparatus for weighing material and in particular for determining signature counts in association with a printing press. The system provides for the automatic registration of tare weight and for automatic removal detection and automatic registration of the last weight prior to removal. Also, in one embodiment described herein there is displayed a time signal representative of the time to go with regard to obtaining a desired full complement of good signatures.

Method and apparatus for weighing material

A closed loop register control system used in association with a printing press and comprising a television camera in combination with a strobe light and a solid state imaging device which enables continuous scanning of the sheet web. The apparatus of this invention also comprises a printing press console having associated therewith a digitizing tablet and a television monitor. The location of the area that is to be examined is defined by the pressman. The area to be examined may be selected by laying a proof sheet down on the digitizing tablet and recording the coordinates of the area of interest. This controls the camera and strobe light with the pressman selecting one part of the image as important and causing the register mechanism to maintain register in that selected area. Electronics then make comparisons between the detected image and a desired reference image to cause correction on a per color basis at the printing press stations.

Closed loop register control

A system for monitoring paper consumption in association with a web printing press having the capability of monitoring paper delivered to the press from multiple rolls. An input waste scale having a waste bin thereon provides for the continuous registration of waste in sequence from the multiple rolls. Separate control circuits are provided, each responsive to the scale signal for sensing increments in scale weight for each respective roll to provide a total of waste weight per roll. Control is provided including means operator initiated for enabling only one of the control circuits for sensing so as to accumulate waste weight only associated with a selected roll.

Paper monitoring system

A method and apparatus for separately weighing, by means of a common scale, contributions of material from multiple streams, such materials typically being printed papers, such as from a printing press. Material that is to be weighed, which is typically waste material, is loaded into receptacles or the like for temporary storage thereof and is subsequently and sequentially released into a storage bin or the like associated with the common scale. An increase in measured weight associated with each respective material release or discharge is then determined. From each weight increment associated with one of the multiple streams, is added to provide a total count corresponding to weight and associated with each, one of the individual streams of the multiple streams of material. In this way, separate count totals are maintained and continuously updated for a plurality of different corresponding deliveries but using a common scale and associated storage bin or container.

A method and apparatus for separately weighing, by means of a common scale, contributions of material for multiple streams, such material typically being printed papers, such as from a printing press. Material that is to be weighed, which is typically waste material, is delivered by workers or operators along multiple respective routes to the common scale bin. Means are provided which are worker initiated, to provide enabling signals respectively associated with the multiple routes along with means responsive to these enabling signals while providing a plurality of separate counts corresponding to weight for each respective route. Delivery of material along each route may be detected by, for example, a floor mat switch, a actuated push button, or by photo detector means.
