An injection molded disposable honing tool is made by an injection molding process. The tool has an elongated rectangular base from which projects an elongated section which may be somewhat smaller. The elongated section terminates in a working face. The entire tool may incorporate abrasive therein homogeneously or simply the elongated section which terminates in the working face. A shot of a plastic melt such as nylon is formed with abrasive mixed homogeneously which is then injected into a mold. For higher cost abrasive, a two shot process may be used with one shot being abrasive free. Alternatively, an abrasive-free insert may be placed in the mold before the abrasive mix is injected. The surface of the working face may be formed to act as a working face of closely packed fingers by placing patterns in the mold surface forming the working face, or subsequently cutting the working face, or a combination of both.

Method of making a plateau honing tool

An elongated narrow and rather thin honing tool is made from a somewhat soft metal or plastic cup holder. A tightly packed bundle of abrasive containing plastic monofilaments is inserted to the bottom of the cup holder and the cup rim is swaged inwardly to girdle and grip the bundle holding the bundle in the cup holder. The projecting tightly packed tips of the monofilaments form the working face of the honing tool. The preferred plastic for the monofilaments is nylon and the preferred transverse sectional shape of such monofilaments is rectangular, although other plastics and shapes may be used. Several methods for forming the tool are disclosed which include an insertion step followed by a swaging step. The bottom of the cup may be slightly arcuate to impart a curved working face to the bundle. The bundle may be cut or trimmed before or after insertion.

Honing tool and method of making

Unitary molded honing tool

A honing tool characterized in one form by an elongated rectangular cup element or holder having a bottom interior surface, a bundle of closely packed relatively short discrete generally parallel abrasive containing filaments secured in the holder, and a layer of instant gel adhesive securing all of the filaments at one end face of the bundle to the bottom interior surface of the holder. To make such a honing tool, a measured bundle of uniformly closely packed nonwoven, generally parallel discrete filaments is formed. A holder is supported and a measured amount of gel adhesive is placed in the bottom interior of the holder so that a layer of such adhesive completely covers the bottom of the interior of the holder. The bundle is then promptly driven into the holder so that all of the filaments at one end of the bundle are in contact with the adhesive prior to the curing of the adhesive. The adhesive is then cured. In another form a rectangular bundle of abrasive containing strips is formed, each having a slit or scored lateral edge. The plastic strips may be formed into bundles by ultrasonic welding through the unslit or unscored root portions of each strip. The bundle is driven into the holder to be secured by the gel adhesive in the same manner. In either form there is produced a rectangular or oblong honing tool which is provided with relatively short fingers closely packed not only within the holder but also at the working face. The improved tool has a somewhat soft or flexible working face as compared to a conventional honing stone or clad steel tool and will not contaminate the surface being honed. The tool provides an improved surface topography whether used as a finish hone or in a tertiary operation.

Abrasive filament honing tool and method of making and using same

A twisted stem helical internal abrading and finishing tool is formed from abrasive containing plastic strips having transverse offset slits along the lateral edges and a longitudinal middle unslit portion. The strips may be stacked with the longitudinal middle unslit portions aligned with the longitudinal axis of a cotter pin, one end of the stack being placed in the bight of the cotter pin. The cotter pin is twisted about its longitudinal axis to form a helical twisted stem from which the slit lateral side or edges extend forming rectangular abrasive fingers uniformly helically arranged. The end of the cotter pin opposite the bight may be inserted into the chuck of a drilling or turning machine to hold and rotate the tool about the axis of the stem.

Internal finishing tool and method of making same

A plastic strap or tape having granular abrasive embedded homogeneously throughout is cut, shaped and formed into a variety of abrasive finishing tools. The plastic working element is preferably rather stiff 6/12 nylon and contains about 30 to 45% by weight of abrasive material. The strap or tape is formed by extrusion of such non-elastomeric plastic through a ceramic die opening and as extruded has an indefinite length in the machine direction, a controlled uniform thickness, and a width which is approximately 5 to 50 times or more the thickness. A preferred width to thickness ratio is about 30:1, or about 3 cm to 1 mm. The strap or tape may be cut to the desired length and partially embossed, serrated or scored either lengthwise or transversely to provide fracture or flex lines. The spacing of the serrations or score lines control the degree of flexibility or aggressiveness of the tool working face. The invention includes a variety of tools formed from the abrasive strap or tape and these include radial or flap wheels, both serrated and non-serrated, and internal tools using a rotatable stem, also both serrated and non-serrated.

Rotary abrasive tools

An abrasive grinding tool and method for making the same characterized by a shaft having a longitudinal axis and a relatively thin flat bundle of monofilaments. The bundle is secured to the shaft and projects radially outwardly from two sides of the shaft in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The shaft may comprise a wire having two securing sections twisted beyond the bundle to form a twisted stem. In one embodiment of the invention, the bundle has intermediate and end sections positioned generally in a plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the shaft. In an alternative embodiment, the end sections are bent circumferentially away from the intermediate sections forming a predetermined bend on each side of the shaft. In another embodiment of the invention, the securing sections of the wire stem are twisted whereby the monofilaments project radially outwardly in a helical pattern.

Abrasive finishing tool

A twisted stem internal abrading tool having molded axially curved swept back filaments is formed from a twisted stem internal finishing tool having strips of abrasive containing plastic arrayed in a radial pattern about a twisted tool stem. The filament end of the tool is inserted into an undersized mold cavity thereby forcing the filaments into an axially curved swept back configuration. With the filament end of the tool fully inserted into the mold, the mold is heated and quenched to permanently fix the filaments in an axially curved bent back configuration producing an abrading tool in which the lengths of the abrasive filaments are positioned for contact with internal surfaces, maximizing the amount of abrasive material put in contact with the work surfaces and increasing the abrading efficiency of the tool.

Internal abrading tool and method of making

An extruded plastic strip contains abrasive grains or minerals embedded homogeneously therein throughout is scored along the machine or extrusion axis direction, such scoring including elliptical or pointed perforations with the long axis or generally pointed ends aligned with the scoring and parallel to the machine or extrusion axis. The preferred plastic material is a 612 nylon, although other plastics may be employed. The material is heat workable, yet relatively stiff and can be used to form a wide variety of power driven abrasive tools such as shown in applicant's prior application Ser. No. 07/471,385 filed Jan. 29, 1990 entitled 'Abrasive Tool and Method of Making', now U.S. Pat. No. 5,155,945. The present application also discloses a rotary wheel type tool utilizing the perforated strip, and a method of making that tool using a gel type cyanoacrylate as an adhesive. With the strip of the present invention, rotary wheel tools as well as many other tools can economically be produced. In tool use, the strip fractures along the scoring and perforations to provide a tool having closely packed individual rectangular fingers, each with a major flat side facing the direction of rotation.

Perforated strip abrading element and abrading tool and method using

A rotary finishing tool and a method for making the same characterized by a rolled or coiled strap of plastic material with abrasive homogeneously embedded throughout. The coiled strap is secured to the bottom interior surface of a cup element by a thin layer of liquid quick setting or instant adhesive. The strap may include transverse slits or serrations to provide the degree of flexure desired and/or to provide fracture lines. To make the tool, a longitudinally extending strap of an abrasive containing plastic material is heated and rolled along its longitudinal axis thereby forming a lightly coiled strap. A cup element is supported and the coiled strap is driven into the cup element whereby one end face of the coiled strap is driven into contact with a thin layer of the instant adhesive. Upon curing of the adhesive, the one end face is secured to the bottom interior surface of the cup element, and the opposite or outer end face becomes the working face of the tool.

Adhesive bonded abrasive finishing tool

A honing tool characterized by an elongated rectangular cup element or holder having a bottom interior surface, a bundle of closely packed relatively short discrete generally parallel filaments secured in the holder, and a thin layer of instant adhesive securing substantially all of the filaments at one end face of the bundle to the bottom interior surface of the holder. To make such a honing tool, a measured bundle of uniformly closely packed nonwoven, generally parallel discrete filaments is formed. A holder is supported and a measured amount of liquid adhesive is placed in the bottom interior of the holder so that a thin layer of such adhesive completely covers the bottom of the interior of the holder. The bundle is then promptly driven into the holder so that all of the filaments at one end of the bundle are in contact with the adhesive prior to the curing of the adhesive. The adhesive is then cured whereby the one end face of the bundle is secured to the bottom interior of the holder.
