A digital instruction is generated regarding one or more electrical-to-optical conversion impairments induced at the transmitter of an optical communication system. The digital instruction may be used by the transmitter to reduce the impairments. Alternatively, or additionally, the digital instruction may be used by the receiver of the optical communication system to compensate for the impairments.

Systems and methods for estimating a transmit symbol sequence implemented in a coherent receiver include receiving a nominally error-free information bit sequence subsequent to Forward Error Correction (FEC) decoding; determining a nominally error-free estimate of the transmitted bit sequence based on the nominally error-free information bit sequence; and determining a nominally error-free estimate of the transmit symbol sequence by mapping the transmit bit sequence to transmit symbols. The system and methods can further include comparing a transmit optical field based on the transmit symbols to a received optical field for one or more measurements.

Systems and methods for error-free reconstruction of transmitted symbols in a coherent receiver

Multiple receivers are comprised in a flexible coherent transceiver of a multi-span optical fiber network. Each of the multiple receivers is operative to handle communications on a respective channel. The multiple receivers measure optical characteristics. For each of the multiple receivers, the optical characteristics include optical nonlinear interactions on the respective channel, the optical nonlinear interactions being at least partially dependent from one span to another span. An optical power of a signal on each of the multiple channels is adjusted as a function of the optical characteristics.

Power control in an optical fiber network

A method for preventing nonlinear interference in an optical communication system. The method may include selecting an optical signal of a first optical channel. The method may include determining an estimate of inter-channel nonlinear interference to the optical signal of the first optical channel. The inter-channel nonlinear interference may be generated by one or more optical signals transmitted over a second optical channel in the optical communication system. The method may include determining one or more linear filters based on the estimate of the inter-channel nonlinear interference. The method may include pre-distorting an optical signal for transmission over the second optical channel using the one or more linear filters. The pre-distorted optical signal may be configured for reducing the inter-channel nonlinear interference to the first optical signal of the first optical channel. The method may include transmitting the pre-distorted optical signal over the second optical channel through an optical transmission medium.

Method and system for nonlinear interference mitigation

Technology for fiber parameter identification in an optical communications network is described. One or more C-matrices are calculated from one or more corresponding signals received at a receiver from a transmitter over a link in the optical communications network, where each C-matrix comprises a plurality of C-coefficients representative of nonlinear noise in the received signal. A combination of chromatic dispersion (CD) pre-compensation applied at the transmitter and CD post-compensation applied at the receiver may substantially compensate for a net CD of the link. The one or more C-matrices are used to identify one or more fiber parameter estimates of the link, such as one or more fiber types, one or more nonlinear coefficients, or one or more dispersion coefficients. A controller of the optical communications network may use the identified fiber parameters estimates to control a state of the network to achieve an objective, such as improved network performance.

Fiber parameter identification

Technology for link parameter identification in an optical communications network is described. A first trained artificial neural network (ANN) may be applied to first input values representative of nonlinear noise in a signal received at a receiver from a transmitter over a link in the optical communications system, thereby generating first output values. A second trained ANN may be applied to second input values comprising the first output values and one or more known parameters of the link, thereby generating second output values. One or more link parameter estimates may be identified based on the second output values. In some examples, the first trained ANN has an architecture specialized for two-dimensional image recognition and therefore suitable for the image-like properties of the first input values. For example, the first trained ANN may comprise a deep residual learning network (ResNet) or a Convolution Neural Network (CNN).

Machine learning for link parameter identification in an optical communications system

A method of fiber Kerr nonlinear noise estimation in an optical transmission system comprises recovering received symbols from a received signal, isolating a noise component of the received signal, estimating coefficients of a matrix based on cross-correlations between the isolated noise component and the fields of a triplet of received symbols or training symbols or estimated transmitted symbols, estimating doublet correlations of the product or the quotient of the isolated noise component and the field of a received symbol or of a training symbol or of an estimated transmitted symbol, and estimating one or more parameters related to nonlinear noise based on the estimated coefficients of the matrix and based on the estimated doublet correlations.

Fiber kerr nonlinear noise estimation

In an optical communication system having flexible transceivers, a transmitter section of one of the flexible transceivers generates a modulated pilot signal whose amplitude or phase or both have been modulated according to a digital code. An optical signal is transmitted from the transmitter section to a receiver section of another of the flexible transceivers. The optical signal conveys data and the modulated pilot signal. The digital code encodes parameter information for the transmitter section and for the receiver section. The receiver section receives the modulated pilot signal, determines the digital code by demodulating the modulated pilot signal, and determines the parameter information from the digital code. The transmitter section and the receiver section adjust their configuration according to the parameter information. The receiver section, while configured according to the parameter information, processes received data or future received data.

Low-latency adjustment of flexible transceivers using pilot signal

Aspects of the present invention provide techniques for compensating nonlinear impairments of a signal traversing an optical communications system. A parallel array of linear convolutional filters are configured to process a selected set of samples of the signal to generate an estimate of a nonlinear interference field. The predetermined set of samples comprises a first sample and a plurality of second samples. A processor applies the estimated nonlinear interference field to the first sample to least partially compensate the nonlinear impairment.

Reduced complexity nonlinear compensation

A method of transmitting a data signal using an optical transmitter of an optical communications system. The optical transmitter is configured to modulate an optical carrier in successive signalling intervals to generate an optical signal. A modulation scheme is provided which comprises a multi-dimensional symbol constellation. The modulation scheme is designed such that an average degree of polarization of a modulated optical signal output from the optical transmitter has a first value when averaged across a first signalling interval, and has a second value when averaged across more than one and fewer than 100 signalling intervals. The second value is less than 10 percent of the first value. During run-time, an encoder of the optical transmitter encoding a data signal to be transmitted as symbols of the constellation, and a modulator of the optical transmitter modulating available dimensions of the optical carrier in accordance with the symbols.
