The present invention provides a safety syringe having a syringe cylinder, a piston stem, a needle cannula capable of being retracted into said syringe cylinder, and a needle cannula attachment hub capable of attachment to the syringe cylinder. An interior configuration of the hub includes a narrow distal portion and an enlarged well area disposed proximal thereto. The narrow distal portion may also include a plurality of annular grooves. The well area and the annular grooves are capable of being filled with an adhesive for attaching the hub to the needle cannula such that high forward needle pull-out forces and lower reverse needle pull-out forces are obtained.

A rack for holding a surgical suture includes a first base having a base connector that can releasably engage a mating base connector of a second base. The rack includes a tray attached to the first base for rotation with respect to the first base. The tray has at least one suture-holding section with resilient clips and bosses to retain a surgical sutures in the suture-holding section. The tray has a pin which defines a rotatable axis and the first base has a connector that engages the pin for releasably connecting the tray to the first base. An array of suture-holding racks includes a first rack having a base with a base connector engaging a mating base connector of a base of a second rack. The first base can be attached to up to four adjacent bases.

An apparatus for draining fluids, for example, from a chest or pleural cavity, includes a collection chamber for collecting fluids through an inlet port for entry of the fluids. Also included is a dry or waterless suction control chamber in fluid communication with the collection chamber for regulating the degree of vacuum imposed in the collection chamber. If desired, a seal chamber can also be provided between the dry suction control chamber and the collection chamber so as to prevent any ambient or atmospheric air from passing into the collection chamber. The suction control chamber has a first inlet which is coupled to a suction source and a second inlet communicates with the ambient. A waterless regulator is provided for regulating the degree of suction imposed in the collection chamber at a plurality of predetermined preset levels of suction. This regulator is positioned between the suction inlet and the ambient inlet. The suction control chamber also has at least a visual indicator disposed between the regulator and the suction inlet for providing immediate confirmation of proper operation of suction in the collection chamber. The present invention also includes a device for retaining tubing under compression so as to provide self-sealing capability of the tubing during sampling or injection procedures.

A drainage device, particularly adapted for use in medical procedures for draining fluids from a body cavity of a patient, incorporating a suction control chamber dimensioned and configured to provide an enhanced air and liquid flow pattern within the chamber. The suction control chamber might also include a baffle plate for air and noise control. The drainage device might further include a seal chamber and an improved high negativity relief valve. The present invention also includes a device, having an integral sampling or injection port, for coupling tubing.
