The embodiments herein use a corrector plate or a light field display in an AR/VR display device to compensate for sub-optimal collimation at the edge of the FOV. In one embodiment, the corrector plate is disposed between the collimator and the viewer so that the light at the edge of the FOV can be corrected so that the aberrations mentioned above do not occur. In another embodiment, rather than using a corrector plate, the AR/VR display device can include a light field display that can use color intensity to pre-distort emitted light to compensate for sub-optimal collimation at the edge of the FOV. In this manner, the AR/VR display device can mitigate aberrations or distortions as the user moves her eyes relative to the display device.

Corrector plates for head mounted display system

Implementations of a compressive light field projection system are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the compressive light field projection system utilizes a pair of light modulators, such as digital micromirror devices (DMDs), that interact to produce a light field. The light field is then projected via a projection lens onto a screen, which may be an angle expanding projection screen that includes a Fresnel lens for straightening the views of the light field and either a double lenticular array of Keplerian lens pairs or a single lenticular, for increasing the field of view. In addition, compression techniques are disclosed for generating patterns to place on the pair of light modulators so as to reduce the number of frames needed to recreate a light field.

Aspects described herein include an optical arrangement that defines a field of view relative to an optical reference point. The optical arrangement comprises a reflective element arranged within the field of view, an off-axis, short-throw projector arranged outside the field of view, and a substantially transparent projection screen arranged within the field of view. The projection screen is configured to preferentially direct imagery projected by the off-axis, short-throw projector toward the reflective element, and to, after direction by the reflective element, transmit the imagery toward the optical reference point.

Compact augmented reality (AR)-capable display with increased field of view

Implementations of angle-enhancing screens are disclosed herein. The angle-enhancing screens increase the field of view of an image projected thereon by a projection lens while maintaining an increased size of the projected image, by decreasing the size of picture elements making up the image while maintaining their pitch. In some embodiments, the angle-enhancing screen includes a field lens, such as a Fresnel field lens, for straightening the views of light projected thereon and a double lenslet array of matched lenslet pairs, each of the pairs including either two positive lenslets or one positive and one negative lenslet, for increasing the field of view. In another embodiment, the angle-enhancing screen may include a field lens and an array of four positive lenslet quartets. In a further embodiment, the field lens may be replaced with a Gabor superlens including two lenslet arrays of different pitches.

The present disclosure generally relates to a projection system with increased spatial resolution. The projection system includes one or more light sources, a spatial light modulator configured to reflect light received from the one or more light sources to generate a plurality of sub-images of a composite image, and an optical system configured to reflect each of the plurality of sub-images the sub-images at a different portion of a projection surface. By projecting the single composite image using a plurality of sub-images projected at different times and/or locations from one another, the composite full image has a higher resolution as compared to the resolution defined by the hardware of the spatial light modulator and light sources.

System and method for increased spatial resolution

Embodiments provide for a display system that overlays augmented reality (AR) content onto a view of an environment. The display includes a first polarizer that receives light providing a view of the environment (which can be natural light or light generated from another display). The polarized light then passes through a transparent display that emits light forming the AR content. The light emitted by the display and the polarized light of the environment pass through a beam splitter before reaching a selective mirror. The polarized light from the environment passes through the selective mirror while the light from the display is reflected back towards the beam splitter where it is collimated. Moreover, when collimating the light, the beam splitter also reflects the light back towards the selective mirror and changes its polarization so the light can pass through the selective mirror.

Embodiments herein describe AR systems that provide occluded AR content to a user while maintaining the perspective of the user. In one embodiment, the AR system includes an optical cloak that contains a mask display device and an AR display device and one or more focusing elements and a prism for focusing light captured from the user's environment. As the light enters the optical cloak, the mask display device occludes a portion of the user's view to generate a black silhouette. The AR system then combines AR content displayed by the AR display device with the image of the environment such that the location of the AR content overlaps with the location of the black silhouette. Furthermore, the spacing and characteristics of the focusing elements and the prism are set to maintain the perspective of the user as the light passes through the optical cloak.

Compact perspectively correct occlusion capable augmented reality displays

Embodiments herein describe AR systems that provide occluded AR content to a user while maintaining the perspective of the user. In one embodiment, the AR system includes an optical cloak that contains a mask display device and an AR display device and one or more focusing elements for focusing light captured from the user's environment. As the light enters the optical cloak, the mask display device occludes a portion of the user's view to generate a black silhouette. The AR system then combines AR content displayed by the AR display device with the image of the environment such that the location of the AR content overlaps with the location of the black silhouette. Furthermore, the spacing and characteristics of the focusing elements is set to maintain the perspective of the user as the light passes through the optical cloak.

Occlusion-capable augmented reality display using cloaking optics

Embodiments described herein include an augmented reality (AR) optical system, and associated method and computer program product, defining a field of view relative to an optical reference point. The optical system comprises an imagery display configured to display images using a received first display signal, and a beam-splitter disposed within the field of view and configured to cause the displayed images to appear in a first focal plane within the field of view. The optical system further comprises an occluding display disposed within the field of view and configured to display, based on the first display signal, occluding images in a second focal plane nearer to the beam-splitter than the first focal plane, thereby reducing environmental light at the optical reference point for at least a portion of the displayed images.
