An apparatus and method for using a pressure-powered tool to perform a downhole operation in a well determine the operating condition of the tool based on indications of pressure in a region associated with the tool. If the pressure indications are indicative of an undesired operating condition, corrective action is taken, such as mechanically shifting the tool or rupturing the rupture disc of an electric rupture disc (ERD) system to shift the tool to a desired operating condition.

Systems and techniques for controlling and monitoring downhole operations in a well

A technique facilitates temporary locking of a mechanical packer to prevent inadvertent actuation of the mechanical packer. The mechanical packer may be set via manipulation of a setting mandrel which works in cooperation with a releasable locking mechanism. The releasable locking mechanism may be initially locked against the setting mandrel and held in place via a piston, e.g. an annular piston, received in a piston chamber, e.g. an annular chamber surrounding the setting mandrel. The piston may be selectively shifted via pressure applied in the piston chamber so as to release the releasable locking mechanism, thus enabling actuation of the mechanical packer.

Systems and methods for using propellant as a force generator in component actuation are disclosed. One embodiment may take the form of a method including deploying at least one component to a subsea location, controlling operation of the at least one component using a control system, and igniting a propellant. The ignition of the propellant actuates the at least one component. Another embodiment may take the form of a subsea system including a control system, a propellant system in communication with the control system, and a component in communication with the propellant system. The propellant system is ignitable by the control system upon receipt of a ignite signal and upon losing communication with the control system after being placed in an armed state by the control system. The component is actuatable by the propellant system after ignition of the propellant system.

A piping system for housing system components for regulating the flow of fluid therethrough is provided. The piping system includes an inner small diameter length of piping through which hot fluids flow, an outer larger diameter length of piping surrounded by cold fluid, and an annulus between the small and larger diameter piping in which the system components are received. Insulation material extends about a predetermined section of the small diameter length of piping for restricting heat transfer therefrom to the system components in the annulus and allowing heat transfer from the system components in the annulus to the outer piping.

A temperature compensated accumulator and method for use thereof downhole in a well. The accumulator may include a housing with separate bulkhead and piston assemblies. Thus, one assembly may include a hydraulic fluid chamber separated from a gas precharge pressure chamber by a piston and the other assembly may include an ambient pressure chamber separated from an atmospheric chamber by another piston. Additionally a pressure relief and check valve assembly may be located at a pressure relief chamber between the other assembly sections. Thus, venting to or from the gas precharge pressure chamber may take place upon exposure to a predetermined decreased or elevated temperature so as to maintain a substantially constant precharge level for the accumulator, for example, in spite of dramatic changes in downhole temperatures.
