Long chain alkyl substituted naphthalenes are produced by alkylating naphthalene with an olefin or other alkylating agent with at least 6, and usually 12 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of an alkylation catalyst comprising a zeolite having rare earth cations, and both ammonium and protonic species, associated with the exchangeable sites of the zeolite. The zeolite is usually a large pore size zeolite such as USY. The presence of rare earths and both ammonium and protonic species increases selectivity for production of long chain mono-alkyl substituted naphthalenes in preference to more highly substituted products.

Naphthalene alkylation with RE and mixed H/NH3 form catalyst

A process for production of alkyl tertiary alkyl ethers in C.sub.4 + hydrocarbon streams rich in isoolefins, typically containing catalyst deactivating amounts of dienes and/or compounds containing heteroatoms. The process is especially advantageous in extending the cycle length for the zeolite catalyzed etherification of isoolefins in C.sub.4 + FCC gasoline by reducing catalyst aging. It has been discovered that if hydrogen is cofed with the alkanol and C.sub.4 + isoolefin rich feedstreams to an etherification reaction catalyzed by acidic zeolite wherein the zeolite has been impregnated with a noble metal the rate of catalyst aging or deactivation is substantially lowered. The process is especially effective, i.e., catalyst aging is particularly reduced, when hydrogen is cofed to an etherification reaction using acidic zeolite Beta catalyst containing palladium.

Process for hydroisomerization and etherification of isoalkenes

The inclusion of alkylated aromatic base fluids, such as alkylated naphthalene, blending stocks with polyalphaolefin base fluids provides significant performance improvements in oxidation stability, solubility, elastomer compatibility and hydrolytic stability.

Lubricant compositions of polyalphaolefin and alkylated aromatic fluids

A process is disclosed for the production of alkyl tertiary alkyl ethers in C.sub.4 + hydrocarbon streams rich in isoolefins, typically containing catalyst deactivating amounts of dienes and/or compounds containing heteroatoms. The process is especially advantageous in extending the cycle length for the zeolite catalyzed etherification of isoolefins in C.sub.4 + FCC gasoline by reducing catalyst aging. It has been discovered that if hydrogen is cofed with the alkanol and C.sub.4 + isoolefin rich feedstreams to an etherification reaction catalyzed by acidic zeolite wherein the zeolite has been impregnated with a noble metal the rate of catalyst aging or deactivation is substantially lowered. The process is especially effective, i.e., catalyst aging is particularly reduced, when hydrogen is cofed to an etherification reaction using acidic zeolite Beta catalyst containing palladium.

Process for the production of tertiary alkyl ether rich FCC gasoline

Long chain alkyl substituted naphthalenes are produced by alkylating naphthalene with an olefin or other alkylating agent with at least 6, and usually 12 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of an alkylation catalyst comprising a zeolite having both ammonium and protonic species associated with the exchangeable sites of the zeolite. The zeolite is usually a large pore size zeolite such as USY. The presence of both ammonium and protonic species increases selectivity for production of long chain mono-alkyl substituted naphthalenes in preference to more highly substituted products.

Naphthalene alkylation process using mixed H/NH3 form catalyst

Ethylbenzene is produced by the alkylation of benzene with ethylene in the presence of an alkylation catalyst having a particular structure defined by its X-ray diffraction pattern. A preferred catalyst is the zeolite MCM-22. The process is typically carried out at a temperature of 300.degree. to 1000.degree. F. but the catalyst provides sufficient activity for the reaction to be carried out at temperatures below 700.degree. F. Liquid phase operation is preferred, giving a lower yield of polyethylated products. The use of the selected catalyst also results in a reduction of the xylene impurity level to values below 500 ppm in the product.

Production of ethylbenzene

The transfer of hydrogen from a paraffin to an olefin is carried out in the presence of, as catalyst, MCM-36. Especially when the paraffin reactant is an isoparaffin, the olefin produced from the reacted isoparaffin may react with unreacted isoparaffin to also produce an alkylate product.

Hydrogen transfer process

A blended mineral oil lubricant is made having a higher viscosity index than predicted by calculating the viscosity index from an ASTM standard method designated D 341-87 or by calculating the average of the actual VI based on the proportion of each component of the blend. The lubricant is treated with a peroxide compound, preferably an organic peroxide such as di-tertiary butyl peroxide to increase the viscosity index. The treated lubricant is blended with a lubricant of lower viscosity index to achieve a blended lubricant having an enhanced viscosity index. The lubricant charge stock and blending component can be a wax-derived lubricant fraction or a conventional light neutral or heavy neutral mineral oil.

Process for making a blended lubricant

Catalytic conversion of a C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkane, e.g., isobutane and/or isopentane, to isoalkenes, e.g., isobutene and/or isopentene, respectively, is undertaken in the presence of an aromatic recycle stream which provides the heat of reaction for the conversion which is endothermic, in the absence of hydrogen.

Isobutene and isoamylene production

Hydrocarbon lubricants having a high viscosity index (V.I.) and low pour point are produced by hydroisomerizing, over zeolite beta, a waxy lube feed such as a waxy vacuum gas oil whose aromatic components are removed by extraction, e.g. with furfural. The zeolite beta catalyst comprises noble metal, e.g., Pt, and a low acidity zeolite beta, e.g., framework boron-containing zeolite beta.

Lubricant production by hydroisomerization of solvent extracted

A method is disclosed for the pretreatment of olefinic hydrocarbon feedstock to remove conjugated dienes and/or basic nitrogen compounds that deactivate acidic catalyst particles used in olefin conversion processes by reacting the dienes with one or more dienophiles to form the corresponding Diels-Alder adduct, followed by catalytic conversion of the olefinic hydrocarbon feedstock containing the adduct. The formation of the Diels-Alder adduct essentially eliminates the role of dienes in the feedstock as catalyst deactivating agents. When maleic anhydride (MA) is employed as the dienophile, basic nitrogen reacts with maleic anhydride, or with the tetrahydrophthalic anhydride adduct, to lower the amount of catalyst deactivating basic nitrogen compounds in the feedstock. Where the olefin conversion process comprises etherification of isoolefins with alkanol in a C.sub.4 + or C.sub.5 + olefinic hydrocarbon feedstream to produce a gasoline boiling range product enriched in oxygen and rich in high octane value alkyl tertiary alkyl ethers, it has been discovered that the adduct, particularly those adducts formed with MA, is in the gasoline boiling range and contributes usefully to the oxygen enrichment of the gasoline and to octane value.

Process for improving olefin etherification catalyst life

A method for upgrading an aromatics-containing charge composition boiling in the gasoline boiling range comprises i) contacting the charge composition with a nitrating agent under nitrating conditions to form a product comprising nitrated aromatics; ii) hydrogenating a feed containing the product of i) under conditions sufficient to substantially reduce the nitro group of the nitrated aromatics so as to form a product comprising aromatic amines, water and heavy amines; and iii) removing the water and heavy amines from the product of step ii) to provide a gasoline boiling range product of an octane rating greater than the charge composition.

Gasoline upgrading by aromatics amination

Turbine oils are produced from a distillate lube fraction by hydrocracking to remove aromatics, catalytically dewaxing, hydrofinishing then treating with an organic peroxide, such as ditertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP) to increase viscosity and reduce cloud point.

Turbine oil production

A selective alkene upgrading process wherein a mixture of intermediate molecular weight monoalkenes comprising at least one linear alkene component and at least one tertiary alkene component is contacted under selective olefin interconversion conditions with medium pore, shape selective acid catalyst, such as MCM-22 aluminosilicate zeolite, thereby converting at a major amount of linear intermediate alkene to lower alkene while leaving tertiary alkene substantially unconverted. In the preferred embodiments, the process interconversion conditions comprise reaction temperature in the range of about 300.degree. C. to 550.degree. C., pressure in the range of 100 kpa to 1000 kPa, thereby selectively converting at least 60% (net) of linear intermediate alkene while converting less than 20% (net) of branched alkene. By etherifying at least a portion of the unconverted tertiary alkene, an oxygenated fuel having enhanced octane rating is obtained. Cracked lower olefins may be recovered for upgrading.

Selective cracking and etherification of olefins

A novel oligomerization catalyst and process for upgrading olefins employing new synthetic catalyst of ultra-large pore crystalline material. The new crystalline material exhibits unusually large sorption capacity demonstrated by its benzene adsorption capacity of greater than about 15 grams benzene/100 grams at 50 torr and 25.degree. C., a hexagonal electron diffraction pattern that can be indexed with a d.sub.100 value greater than about 18 Angstrom Units and a hexagonal arrangement of uniformly sized pores with a maximum perpendicular cross section of at least about 13 Angstrom units; and the porous crystalline material is impregnated with at least one oligomerization promoting metal, such as Groups VIIIA metals, preferably nickel. The new process is provided for catalytic oligomerization of olefin feedstock which comprises contacting the feedstock under catalytic conversion conditions with the metal-modified acid metallosilicate solid catalyst having the structure of MCM-41 with hexagonal honeycomb lattice structure consisting essentially of uniform pores in the range of about 20 to 100 Angstroms. The oligomerization reaction is very selective, especially when conducted at temperature of 60.degree. to 120.degree. C. Low severity reaction permits excellent conversion of lower olefins at pressure of about 100-13,000 kPa range and moderate space velocity.
