In a pressure control system having a solenoid-operated fluid valve that has an output hydraulic pressure which varies in accordance with a solenoid input signal, a dynamic learning block is configured to adjust the initial, default values for control points stored in a pressure-current (P-I) data table based on observed (measured) operating points that reflect the solenoid's actual transfer characteristic. A feed forward control block is configured to generate the solenoid input signal having a level based on the adjusted control points in the data table, which improves the accuracy of the solenoid input signal. An adjustment method uses a plurality of circular buffers each configured to store observed operating points falling within a respective range, and provides a mechanism to allow adjustment of the control points based on only partial data.

Method for real-time learning of actuator transfer characteristics

The dynamic response characteristics of an electro-hydraulic (EH) physical plant is represented by a model. The model includes a series of second order transfer functions, one for each operating point, of the EH physical plant. Command pressure, overshoot, rise time, damping coefficient, natural frequency and gain parameters are determined in developing each transfer function. The model can be used to advance the time in which the design and development of a control system for the EH physical plant can begin.

Method for generating an electro-hydraulic model for control design

An improved control method for a solenoid-operated hydraulic actuator for deactivating an engine valve mechanism characterizes the dynamic response of the mechanism based on a lumped parameter model of the solenoid, the hydraulic sub-system, and a locking pin mechanism actuated by a control pressure developed by the hydraulic sub-system. In response to a mode change request, constituent delay times associated with the solenoid, the hydraulic sub-system, and the locking pin mechanism are determined and summed to form an estimate of the overall delay time required to complete the requested cylinder deactivation. The solenoid activation is then scheduled based on the estimated delay time and a window of opportunity in the engine cycle for cylinder deactivation.

Model-based control of a solenoid-operated hydraulic actuator for engine cylinder deactivation

A method and apparatus are provided for estimating brake pressure in a disk brake caliper, on the basis of a simplified mathematical model. The simplified model is limited to operating conditions in which the caliper piston is holding the brake pads in contact with the rotor, wherein higher order terms and certain fluid dependent terms of the model can be eliminated, thereby simplifying the model to the point that it can be readily used in an effective and efficient manner for estimating fluid pressure in the cylinder of the caliper. The displacement of the piston is estimated while the piston is holding the brake pad in contact with the rotor, as a function of an exchange of fluid between the pressure source and the cylinder. The brake pressure in the cylinder is determined as a function of the displacement of the piston while the piston is holding the brake pad in contact with the rotor. The exchange of fluid between the cylinder and pressure source is estimated as a function of a difference in pressure between the cylinder and the source.
