Antigens ofthat provide specific and strong delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) immune response, or which stimulate IFN-γ secretion, are used for testing subjects for infection. Any skin testing format may be adapted for testing for the delayed type hypersensitivity, including a patch, a needle, or a prong. Presence of DTH indicates infection. Antigens for detecting toxoplasma infection by monitoring cellular immunity

proteins MIC1 and MIC4 are components of excretory/secretory antigens (ESA) that elicit delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses in infected animals. These antigens are capable of inducing IFN-g secretion by splenic T cells (ELISPOT assay), stimulating T cells to produce cytokines that recruit inflammatory monocytes and neutrophils resulting in a positive luminol test (luminol ear assay), and eliciting a positive skin test in the guinea pig.
