An overload or congestion condition on an access medium () of a communication network () is indicated by at least one condition that indicates an amount of access attempts on the access medium () corresponds to congestion or overload of a capacity of the access medium (). Example conditions in disclosed embodiments include an occupancy level of the access medium, an average number of access probes associated with successful access attempts, a relationship between received power and interference, an emergency condition and network configuration or maintenance procedures. In a disclosed example, when congestion or overload occurs, at least one technique is implemented to reduce the congestion or overload for stabilizing the access medium. Disclosed example techniques for this include throttling the number of access attempt by reducing the number of users making access attempts or the frequency of user access attempts. Another example technique includes adjusting at least one access medium parameter that will reduce the access attempt traffic.

Managing overload of an access medium for a communication system

System, methods, and networks are disclosed that allow base station systems of a wireless communication network to transmit outgoing traffic over a packet backhaul network to multiple routing elements on the MSC side of the network. A base station system described herein identifies a primary routing element and a backup routing element. The primary routing element is the device to which the base station system transmits outgoing traffic under normal operation, and the backup routing element is an alternate to the primary routing element. To transmit traffic over the packet backhaul network, the base station system monitors the availability of the primary routing element. If the primary routing element is available, then the base station system transmits outgoing traffic over the packet backhaul network to the primary routing element. If unavailable, then the base station system transmits outgoing traffic over the packet backhaul network to the backup routing element.

For use in packet-switched networks, a method is provided for using external information regarding the degree of misordering of packets, to make header compression more robust against such misordering.

Method of header compression over channels with out-of-order delivery

In one embodiment, whether packet loss of link layer packets at a receiver has exceeded a lost threshold is detected. Feedback is sent to a transmitter indicating that a header compressor, for compressing higher layer packets at the transmitter, should send a less compressed header if the packet loss of the link layer packets has exceeded the lost threshold. The higher layer packets are at a higher layer than the link layer and are formed by the link layer packets.

At least a portion of a total spectrum bandwidth of a wireless system may be allocated to each of a plurality of users by assigning at least one unique spreading code to each of the plurality of users. At least two of the plurality of users may have different spectrum capabilities and may transmit simultaneously. Each of the assigned spreading codes may have a different code length. The number and/or the code length of the spreading codes assigned to each user may be indicative of a portion of the total spectrum bandwidth allocated to each user.

In one embodiment, a relationship is determined between radio link protocol (RLP) sequence numbers in received RLP packets and real-time protocol (RTP) sequence numbers in RTP packets decompressed from the received RLP packets. An RTP sequence number associated with a compressed RTP packet is determined based on the determined relationship and at least one of the RLP sequence numbers of the received RLP packet or packets forming the compressed RTP packet. An RTP time stamp may be determined in a similar manner.

Data communication includes an estimate of packet error rate that is useful, for example, when there is insufficient data transmission to provide a direct measurement of packet error rate. At least one pilot channel output provides a basis to determine an estimated packet error rate. One example includes using a pilot channel ratio of an energy-per-chip to a noise spectrum density. Another example includes using a pilot symbol error rate from the pilot channel as the basis for determining the traffic channel packet error rate.

Outer loop power control for a traffic channel includes using at least one output from another channel to determine an appropriate control threshold such as a signal-to-noise ratio when selected channel conditions exist. One example traffic channel condition comprises having insufficient data transmission to provide a direct measurement of packet error rate. Another example traffic channel condition used to determine when to use the other channel output is a transmission mode on the traffic channel. An example output used for setting the control threshold is a chip energy to noise ratio of a pilot channel associated with the traffic channel.

A method is provided for controlling the misordering of packets in packet delivery in radio access networks (RANs) and other packet-switched networks. In one aspect, the method involves reading header information to determine the proper sequence of arriving packets, storing at least some packets that have arrived out of order, and forwarding the stored packets in a modified order that has no more than a specified degree of misordering.

In one embodiment, a transmission resource for transmitting data from a number of applications in a multiple carrier communication system is managed. In this embodiment, an aggregate transmission resource available to the number of applications is determined, and the determined aggregated transmission resource is distributed to each carrier based on a load on each carrier. In another embodiment a potential transmission resource for each application on each carrier is determined, and a carrier transmission resource for each carrier is determined based on the determined potential transmission resource for each application on the carrier. Data from at least one of the applications is assigned to at least one of the carriers based on the transmission resource distributed to or determined for the carrier, and the assigned data is transmitted on the carrier.

Multiple carrier resource management

The present invention provides techniques for preventing protocol stalling. A control platform is adapted to generate a predetermined time period, wherein the predetermined time period is reset when an acknowledgement signal is received. The control platform is further adapted to examine stored packets to detect new or negatively acknowledged packets. A transmission platform is adapted to transmit an earliest transmitted packet after the predetermined time period expires when no new or negatively acknowledged packets are detected.
