A system and method for generating a pressure-volume curve for a hydraulic system in a vehicle. The system includes a plunger coupled to the hydraulic system, a pressure sensor configured to detect a pressure of the hydraulic system, and an electronic controller configured to access a prior pressure-volume curve from a memory, generate a signal to move the plunger, receive a pressure from the pressure sensor, generate a new pressure-volume curve based upon the received pressure and a position of the plunger, compare the new pressure-volume curve to the prior pressure-volume curve, in response to the new pressure-volume curve and the prior pressure-volume curve differing by at least a threshold value, replace the prior pressure-volume curve with the new pressure-volume curve in the memory, and actuating the hydraulic system based upon the stored pressure-volume curve.

Systems and methods for a braking a vehicle. In one example, the braking system includes a friction braking system, a regenerative braking system, and an electronic processor. The electronic processor is communicatively coupled to the friction braking system and the regenerative braking system. The electronic processor is configured to receive a driver brake request and determine a brake failure state. The brake failure state indicates a brake failure. In response to determining the brake failure state, the electronic processor applies a braking force based on the driver brake request. The braking force includes a frictional braking force generated by the friction braking system and a regenerative braking force generated by the regenerative braking system.

System and method for motor brake boost function failure

A system and method for performing a diagnostic on a hydraulic system in a vehicle while the vehicle is at a standstill. The method includes, by means of an electronic processor, moving a plunger at a constant rate, determining a position of the plunger, receiving a pressure of the hydraulic system from a pressure sensor, comparing the determined position and the measured pressure to a position versus pressure graph, and sending a diagnostic to a diagnostic indicator.

A method and system is provided for determining a direction of movement of an electric vehicle. The method and system includes determining the direction of rotation and the direction of torque of a motor shaft, determining an operating gear of the vehicle, and determining a previous direction of movement of the vehicle. The method and system then determines if the vehicle is moving forward or backwards. The method and system also determines whether the vehicle is motoring (i.e., converting electric power to mechanical power) or generating (i.e., converting mechanical power into electric power).

A hill rollback control system and method for controlling a rollback speed of a motor vehicle with wheel brakes. Upon ascertaining that the vehicle is rolling back, the system and method determine, based on a grade angle of the terrain that the vehicle is traveling on and a temperature of a transmission, a target rollback speed for the vehicle. The target rollback speed is lower when the grade of the terrain is above a threshold value. Also, the target rollback speed is lower when the temperature of the transmission is above a threshold value. The actual rollback speed of the vehicle is set and maintained at the target rollback speed by applying the vehicle's wheel brakes.

A method and a system of determining a driving direction of a vehicle traveling at a low speed. The method includes determining whether the vehicle is in one of three states: (1) an uphill state in which the vehicle is located on an upward sloping surface, (2) a downhill state in which the vehicle is located on a downward sloping surface, and (3) a flat surface state in which the vehicle is located on a flat surface. The method also includes obtaining information from a plurality of vehicle sensors and determining a direction of movement of the vehicle based upon the determined state of the vehicle and information from the plurality of vehicle sensors.

Systems and methods for detecting wheel-spinning situations of a vehicle. One system includes a controller. The controller is configured to determine a speed of each wheel of the vehicle based on information received from a plurality of wheel speed sensors, to identify a second slowest wheel of the vehicle based on the speed of each wheel, to calculate a vehicle acceleration torque based on an acceleration of the second slowest wheel of the vehicle and a mass of the vehicle, to calculate a torque ratio based on the vehicle acceleration torque and a wheel drive torque, and to activate a traction control system when the torque ratio is greater than a predetermined threshold.

Vehicle speed estimation for 4WD vehicles under wheel-spinning situations

A cooperative traction control system that integrates throttle control and torque distribution. The system also uses dual slip controllers and methods that involve controlling the distribution of torque between wheels in the front and rear axles of a vehicle and a relatively small or no adjustment of the engine throttle (or, more generally, engine torque output) to reduce wheel slip. The control is cooperative in the sense that two controllers&#x2014;a front axle torque controller and a rear axle torque controller&#x2014;work together (or are controlled together) to reduce wheel slip and thereby achieve improved straight-line movement of a vehicle from a standstill.

Cooperative traction control system using dual slip controllers

A system and method for compensating sensor signals. The system includes a first sensor, a second sensor, a fuzzy logic module, and a Kalman filter module. The first sensor is configured to generate a first signal corresponding to a first condition of a vehicle. The second sensor is configured to generate a second signal corresponding to a second condition of the vehicle. The fuzzy logic module is configured to output a first set of values based on a signal stability of at least the second signal. The Kalman filter module is configured to receive the first set of values and the first signal and estimate a sensor compensation signal based on at least the first set of values and the first signal.

System and method for compensating sensor signals

An estimated brake rotor temperature is provided including a cooling effect during active braking as well as when braking is inactive. The cooling effect is based on a difference between the rotor temperature and sensed ambient temperature and is also preferably based on wheel speed. In an active braking mode, a heating effect is provided based at least on sensed wheel speed. If no brake pressure signal is available, the heating effect is further based on vehicle deceleration. The heating effects for front and rear brake units are relatively compensated for differences in heat generation due to load shifts during braking, the compensation being preferably based on vehicle deceleration. The brake rotor temperature estimation is realized in a programmed digital computer but does not use computer resource hungry exponential functions.

Method and apparatus for estimating vehicle brake rotor temperature

A method and apparatus are provided for estimating brake pressure in a disk brake caliper, on the basis of a simplified mathematical model. The simplified model is limited to operating conditions in which the caliper piston is holding the brake pads in contact with the rotor, wherein higher order terms and certain fluid dependent terms of the model can be eliminated, thereby simplifying the model to the point that it can be readily used in an effective and efficient manner for estimating fluid pressure in the cylinder of the caliper. The displacement of the piston is estimated while the piston is holding the brake pad in contact with the rotor, as a function of an exchange of fluid between the pressure source and the cylinder. The brake pressure in the cylinder is determined as a function of the displacement of the piston while the piston is holding the brake pad in contact with the rotor. The exchange of fluid between the cylinder and pressure source is estimated as a function of a difference in pressure between the cylinder and the source.
